6. US, Japan and S. Korea warn Pyongyang against nuclear test

• The United States, Japan and South Korea on November 13, 2022 vowed a `strong and resolute response` if Pyongyang carried out a nuclear test.
• A record-breaking recent spate of missile tests by North Korea has sent fears soaring that such a test its seventh may happen soon.
• US President Joe Biden held talks on the crisis with allies Japan and South Korea in Phnom Penh, on the eve of a crunch meeting with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, whom he will press to rein in North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
• Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol issued a joint statement condemning the recent barrage, which included an intercontinental ballistic missile.


7. Iran issues first death sentence after `riots`

• Iran on November 13, 2022 issued its first death sentence linked to participation in `riots`, amid nationwide protests since the death of Mahsa Amini, the judiciary`s Mizan Online website said.
• The accused was sentenced in a Tehran court to death for the crime of `setting fire to a government building, disturbing public order, assembly and conspiracy to commit a crime against national security, and an enemy of God and corruption on earth`, one of the most serious offences under Iranian law, Mizan Online reported.
• Another court in Tehran sentenced five others to prison terms of between five to 10 years for `gathering and conspiring to commit crimes against national security and disturbing public order`. All those convicted can appeal their sentence, Mizan added


8. Kherson races to restore power, water after Russian retreat

• Utility companies in Kherson were working to restore critical infrastructure mined by fleeing Russian forces, with most homes in the southern Ukrainian city still without electricity and water, regional officials said on November 13, 2022.
• The governor of Kherson region, Yaroslav Yanushevych, said the authorities had decided to maintain a curfew from 5pm to 8am and ban people from leaving or entering the city, as a security measure.
• `The enemy mined all critical infrastructure objects, Yanushevych told Ukrainian TV. `We are trying to meet within a few days and (then) open the city,` he said, adding that he hoped mobile phone operators could start working on Sunday

• Israel`s veteran ex premier Benjamin Netanyahu secured a mandate on November 13, 2022 to form a new government, paving the way for his comeback at the helm of what is expected to be the most right-wing administration in the country`s history.
• After a period of unprecedented political gridlock tested the electorate with five votes in less than four years, the Nov 1 election gave Netanyahu and his far-right allies a clear majority in the 120-seat parliament.
• `I have decided to assign to you, Benjamin Netanyahu, the task of forming a government,` President Isaac Herzog told him at a ceremony in Jerusalem.
• Accepting the mandate, the 73-year-old right-wing politician widely known as `Bibi` vowed to serve all Israelis, `those who voted for us and those who did not it is my responsibility`

10. Gyms, public baths also off-limits to Afghan women

• Gyms and public baths are now also off-limits to Afghan women, the Taliban confirmed on November 13, 2022, days after banning them from parks and funfairs.
• Women are increasingly being squeezed out of public life since the Taliban`s return last year despite the hardline Islamists promising a softer version of the harsh rule that characterised their first stint in power that ended in 2001.
• Most female government workers have lost their jobs or are being paid a pittance to stay at home while women are also barred from travelling without a male relative, and must cover up with a burqa or hijab when out of the home. Schools for teenage girls have also been shuttered across most of the country since the Taliban`s August 2021 return
