1. Eight law enforcers martyred in Lakki, Bajaur

• Eight law enforcement officials, including six policemen and two soldiers, were martyred in two separate incidents in Lakki Marwat and Bajaur districts on November 16, 2022.
• The first incident occurred in the Kurrum Par area of Lakki Marwat in the morning when militants opened fire on a police van, killing six personnel, including an assistant sub inspector (ASI). The attack was later claimed by the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (T TP) in a statement.
• An official said a team of the Abbas police checkpost was on its way to the Wanda Shahabkhel area to perform security duty at a weekly cattle market when militants opened fire on their van with sophisticated weapons from multiple sides, killing six law enforcers on the spot


2. Centre rejects Punjab-led JIT on Wazirabad shooting

• Amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) formed to probe the attempt on former premier Imran Khan`s life in Wazirabad, the Centre has rejected the new team formed by the Punjab government and suggested that it reconstitute the body by giving intelligence officials a role to ensure fair investigation.
• In a strongly-worded communique sent to the Punjab government on November 16, 2022, the federal government said it would not accept a `controversial` police officer, Ghulam Mahmood Dogar, who had allegedly violated the orders of the establishment division in the past, as head of the JIT.
• While the Ministry of Interior letter also raised some legal flaws in the new JIT constituted by the Punjab government, a sessions court in Wazirabad, in the meantime directed the same JIT to record the version of the petitioner and decided that a separate FIR of the shooting was not needed on the basis of new information


3. World Bank to provide $1.3bn for agriculture, housing relief

• The World Bank said on November 16, 2022 that it intends to provide Pakistan with $1.3 billion for emergency, agriculture and housing relief in the wake of catastrophic floods this year.
• `Pakistan requires substantial investments-the key is international support in order to foster people-centric climate adaptation and resilience,` said the bank`s regional director John A. Roome.
• Mr Roome, who is the World Bank`s regional director for South Asia sustainable development, shared the bank`s plan with Federal Minister for National Food Security Tariq Bashir Cheema at a meeting in Islamabad


4. US, Pakistan launch initiative to deepen economic ties

• The United States and Pakistan on November 16, 2022 formally launched a robust initiative envisaging a string of measures to enhance bilateral trade between the two countries.
• US Ambassador to Pakistan Donald Blome and Pakistan`s Minister of State for Finance and Revenue Dr Aisha Ghaus Pasha launched the five-year project named the Investment Promotion Activity (IPA) to be implemented by the United States Agency for International Development(USAID).
• The IPA will help strengthen Pakistan`s business environment, build the capacity of Pakistani institutions focused on investment promotion, attract foreign direct investment, and increase US-Pakistan bilateral trade and investment


5. Cabinet okays Rs50bn for houses damaged in floods

• The provincial cabinet on November 16, 2022 approved Rs50 billion for the construction of damaged houses for flood affected people, who would be given first installment of Rs50,000 each to start construction.
• Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, who presided over the meeting, decided that the remaining amount of Rs250,000 would be transferred to their bank accounts to complete the house when initial construction would reach the plinth level.
• Briefing journalists, Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said that the cabinet had approved Rs50bn for the housing project tobe used for `Retrospective Financing` for spending the amount on fully damaged houses for the time being so that project may start disbursement till the World Bank financing was available

6. Pakistan floods `10th costliest disaster` in a decade

• THE calamitous Pakistan floods of 2022 were the tenth most expensive climate disaster to have buffeted a nation over the last decade, according to risk modelling firm RMS.
• The floods inflicted an estimated loss of $3 billion on the country, caused over 1,700 deaths and displaced eight million people.
• Poor countries like Pakistan, which saw around eight million people displaced, of ten bear the brunt of devastating weather events, RMS said in its observation.
• The firm carried out a survey to rank the 10 biggest natural disasters to have hit humanity over the last decade.


7. Lahore most polluted city in world for third day

• The capital of Punjab was listed as the most polluted city in the entire world with terrible air quality for the third straight day On November 15, 2022.
• The AQI US was 279 at 9am, when the worst air quality was recorded, according to iqair.com, a website that tracks global air quality.
• Individual areas of Lahore fared worse, with Lahore American School 289, CERP office 275, Block K 242, Phase 8 DHA 236, US Consulate in Lahore 235, Chatta Park 226, Syed Maratib Ali Road 225, Block B1 211, Dawn Bread Kot Lakhpat 211, and Venus Housing Society Main Blvd 211.
• In the AQI ranking of world cities, Lahore was followed by Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and Kolkata, India

8. Ukraine missile caused blast by accident, says Poland

• Western leaders played down fears on November 16, 2022 that a deadly missile blast in eastern Poland could herald a dangerous escalation in the war Russia launched against Ukraine, blaming stray antiaircraft fire.
• Poland and NATO said the explosion was likely caused by a Ukrainian air defence missile launched to intercept a Russian barrage, but that Moscow was ultimately to blame for starting the conflict. Two people were killed on Tuesday when at least one missile hit a village in NATO member Poland near the Ukrainian border, during a mass Russian bombardment aimed at civilian infrastructure inside Western-backed Ukraine. Both the Western leaders at the G20 summit in Bali and NATO ambassadorsin Brussels called emergency meetings, amid fears the blasts were a Russian strike that might force the allies to respond

9. Kuwait executes seven people, first since 2017

• Kuwait put seven people to death for murder on November 16, 2022, the public prosecutions service said, as the first executions since 2017 went ahead despite appeals from a prominent rights group.
• One Ethiopian woman and one Kuwaiti woman were among those hanged, along with three Kuwaiti men, a Syrian and a Pakistani, a statement said.
• The executions are the first since January 25, 2017, when the oil-rich Gulf country also hanged a group of seven people, including one member of the royal family

10. Nasa rocket Artemis lifts off for the Moon

• Nasa launched the most powerful rocket ever built on a journey to the Moon on November 16, 2022, in a spectacular blaze of light and sound that marked the start of the space agency`s new flagship programme, Artemis.
• The 32-storey tall Space Launch System (SLS) blasted off from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida at 01:47am (0647 GMT), producing a record 8.8 million pounds (39 mega newtons)of thrust.
