6. US is `here to stay`, VP assures Asian leaders at APEC summit

• Vice President Kamala Harris told Asian leaders on November 18, 2022 that the United States was committed to the region for the long haul, rejecting doubts about its engagement as China expands its clout.
• Addressing the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Bangkok, Harris called the United States a `proud Pacific power` and said that long-standing US network of security alliances has allowed Asia to prosper.

7. Azerbaijan to open embassy in Israel

• Azerbaijan said on November 18, 2022 it would open an embassy in Tel Aviv, three decades after the Shia-majority country and the Jewish state established diplomatic relations.
• `The Azerbaijani parliament made the historic decision to open an embassy of Azerbaijan in Tel Aviv, Israel,` the office of outgoing Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said, without providing details on when the move would take place.
• `I welcome the decision,` the premier said in a statement.
• Israel has an embassy in Baku, with Azerbaijan opening a trade office in Tel Aviv in July last year, and a tourism office in March this year


8. Russia accuses Ukraine of executing 10 POWs

• Russia`s defence ministry said on November 18, 2022 that Ukraine had executed 10 Russian prisoners of war, accusing Kyiv of carrying out war crimes that Moscow said the West ignores.
• The ministry cited video circulating on Russian social media, which purportedly showed the execution of Russian prisoners of war.
• `This brutal murder of Russian servicemen is neither the first, nor the only war crime,` the defence ministry said.
• `This is common practice in the armed forces of Ukraine that is actively supported by the Kyiv regime and blatantly ignored by its western patrons

9. APEC summit disrupted by N. Korean missile test

• Several Asia Pacific leaders who had gathered for an economic summit in the Thai capital broke away from their meeting on November 18, 2022 to condemn North Korea after it test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile.
• US Vice President Kamala Harris called an emergency gathering of leaders from Australia, Japan, South Korea, Canada and New Zealand on the sidelines of the summit after North Korea carried out the missile test just an hour before its inauguration.
• The leaders vowed to pressure North Korea as they held urgent talks on the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile.
• Japan said the missile landed in its waters but was capable of striking the US mainland


10. Mufti Rafi Usmani is no more

• Muf ti Rafi Usmani, cleric, scholar and patron of Darul Uloom Karachi, passed away here on November 18, 2022 after a prolonged illness. He was 86.
• The eldest son of Mufti Shafi Usmani, a renowned cleric and founder of Darul Uloom Karachi one of the largest seminaries of Deoband school of thought in the country he was also the elder brother of Wifaqu1 Madaris Al Arabia Pakistan President Mufti Taqi Usmani.
• Born in July 1936 in the town of Deoband of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Mufti Usmani migrated to Pakistan with his family in 1947. His students and admirers who were well aware of his personal and family history said Mufti Usmani memorised Quran in 1948 and then completed Darse Nizami degree from his father`s seminary, then located in the old city area of Nanakwara.
