• In an impressive ceremony held at Joint Staff Headquarters, General Sahir Shamshad Mirza assumed the charge as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) on November 27, 2022.
• According to an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) news release, besides a large number of serving and retired officers from tri-services, the ceremony was also attended by the former chairmen of JCSC.

2. PTI, rivals in close fight as A JK votes in local polls

• The ruling PTI in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) appeared to have lost to its arch-rivals PML-N and PPP in Muzaffarabad district, but was ahead of them in Neelum and Jhelum valley districts, as polling for the first phase of local government (LG) elections in Muzaffarabad division was held on November 27, 2022 in a generally peaceful atmosphere.
• Contrary to the widely prevailing security concerns due to the non-deployment of security forces from Pakistan, only four persons, including a woman, sustained minor wounds in two incidents at three polling stations in Muzaffarabad district.
• `Regardless of results, I express my heartfelt gratitude to the people of Muzaffarabad division for demonstrating great political maturity by turning up in large numbers and casting their votes in a cordial atmosphere at their respective polling stations. 3. Railway gets 46 modern coaches from China

• Pakistan Railways (PR) has received a consignment of 46 high-speed modern coaches from China, paving the way for provision of state-of-the-art travelling facilities to the masses in the country.
• After receipt of 46 completely built units (CBUs) manufactured in China, PR is set to soon start manufacturing 184 similar coaches (passenger, luggage and brake vans) at its carriage factory in Islamabad in association with Chinese engineers under the technology-transfer component of the 230 coaches` purchase contract.
• Similarly, Pakistan Railways would soon receive various consignments of 200 modern goods/ freight wagons from China, and after receipt of these wagons, it would start manufacturing 620 wagons of similar designs at its Mughalpura workshop and the carriage factory in Risalpur under the technology-transfer segment of the contract. It was one year ago, in November 2021, when looking to upgrade and enhance long-distance passenger services in the country, the federal government had inked an agreement with China Railway Construction Corporation Tangshan Locomotive and Rolling Stock Company for the supply of 230 high-speed coaches for PR

4. 7m die of air pollution every year worldwide, says WHO report

• The public health experts have warned that nine out of 10 people breathe air that exceeds World Health Organization (WHO) guideline limits for pollutants, with low-and middle-income countries, including Pakistan suffering the most.
• Addressing a workshop on effects of the smog here in Lahore, General Cadre Doctors Association President Dr Masood Sheikh said around seven million people per year die of air pollution worldwide.
• Quoting a report of the WHO, he said, 4.2m out of 7m people die of exposure to ambient air pollution including smog.
• Dr Sheikh said they are at greater risk of lung damage by smog and can even end up in reactivation of tuber culosis.He said the effects of smog on living organisms will not only harm human and animal health but will also affect the entire environment. Various geographical conditions, global temperature changes, and environmental variations all have an impact on human health and the environment, including animal life

5. South Punjab police seek Rs5bn to fight gangs

• The south Punjab police high-ups have asked the provincial government for a special financial package of Rs5,075 million in order to procure `missing war equipment` for sustainable gains in the ongoing operation against criminals in the katcha areas of Rajanpur and Rahim Yar Khan.
• According to the police, Rs36m was required for running cost per month, Rs800m for the purchase of bullet-proof boats, Rs737m for purchase of track APCs, Rs8m for procurement of thermal imaging drones, Rs6m for specialised training by the Pakistan Army, Rs70.7m for bulletproofing of existing vehicles, and Rs2,800m for the consolidated police infrastructure development.
• Similarly, Rs144m is required for the induction of 200 local police officers while Rs472m will be needed as special incentive for the police operation

6. Ukraine sees signs Russia may leave occupied N-plant

• The head of Ukraine`s state-run nuclear energy firm said on November 27, 2022 there were signs that Russian forces might be preparing to leave the vast Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant which they seized in March soon after their invasion.
• Such a move would be a major battlefield change in the partially-occupied southeastern Zaporizhzhia region where the front line has hardly shifted for months.
• Repeated shelling around the plant has spurred fears of a nuclear catastrophe.
• `In recent weeks we are effectively receiving information that signs have appeared that they are possibly preparing to leave the (plant),` Petro Kotin, head of Energoatom, said on national television. `Firstly, there are a very large number of reports in Russian media that it would be worth vacating the (plant) and maybe worth handing control (of it) to the (International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA), he said, referring to the United Nations nuclear watchdog. `One gets the impression they`re packing their bags and stealing everything they can

7. Breakthrough in Venezuela talks spurs US to ease embargo

• The government of Nicolas Maduro and the Venezuelan opposition broke a political stalemate on Saturday with a broad social accord, and the US government responded by allowing a major US oil company to resume operations in Venezuela.
• The accord heralded a potential easing of a grinding economic and political crisis in Venezuela.
• It paves the way for the United Nations to oversee a trust fund of frozen assets of the Maduro government to be used for a variety of social projects in the South American country, including programmes related to education, health, food security, flood response and electricity

8. Kim vows N. Korea to have world`s most powerful N-force

• North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said his country aimed to have the world`s most powerful nuclear force as he celebrated the launch of its newest intercontinental ballistic missile at a ceremony with his young daughter, state media reported on November 27, 2022.
• Kim also handed promotions to more than 100 officials and scientists for their work on the Hwasong-17 dubbed the `monster missile` by analysts and believed to be capable of reaching the US mainland just days after Pyongyang test-fired it in one of its most powerful launches yet.
• Hailing the new ICBM as `the world`s strongest strategic weapon` Kim said North Korean scientists had made a `wonderful leap forward in the development of the technology of mounting nuclear warheads on ballistic missiles`, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA)reported
