1. TTP ditches ceasefire, returns to warpath

• With the army set to witness a change of command at the top today, the proscribed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has asked its combatants to carry out attacks across the country in the wake of `unabated` operations by security forces against militants in the southern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
• In a chilling statement signalling the end of the ceasefire with the state, the banned outfit said on Monday that security forces had launched operations against their people in Bannu, Lakki Marwat and other districts of the province.
• `Carry out attacks, wherever and whenever you can,` the statement directed its so-called sector commanders and combatants throughout the country.
• The statement said that the TTP had shown `maximum restraint` and had warned the general public that the peace process should not be sabotaged


2. Senate body passes new bill banning corporal punishment in Islamabad

• The Senate Standing Committee on Interior on November 28, 2022 passed the Islamabad Capital Territory Prohibition of Corporal Punishment Bill 2022 moved by Senator Walid Iqbal and Senator Sadia Abbasi.
• The meeting of the committee, chaired by Senator Mohsin Aziz, was held at Parliament House and attended by Senators Rana Maqbool Ahmed, Moula Bux Chandio, Azam Nazeer Tarar, Rubina Khalid, Seemee Ezdi, Kamil Ali Agha, Saifullah Abro, Syed Yousuf Ali and others.
• Last year on Dec 1, the parliament in its joint sitting had passed the law, but later some legal experts objected to its language, compelling the movers to introduce a new bill


3. Punjab becomes first province to reach Web 3.0

• The Punjab government on November 28, 2022 launched a Web 3.0 portal to become the first province in the country to introduce the third generation of the World Wide Web.
• A special web portal (web3.punjab.gov.pk) was launched for the registration of Web 3.0 contributors including researchers, scientists and IT industry experts. National and international companies working with Web 3.0 technology will also be able to submit their valuable feedback through the portal.
• Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi constituted a committee on the adoption of Web 3.0 in the province led by Punjab Finance Minister Mohsin Leghari and Punjab Information Technology (IT) Minister Dr Arslan Khalid held its meeting at Arfa Software Technology Park.
• The world is moving towards the third generation of the web i.e. Web 3.0


4. Growth shocks to render more jobless, warns ILO

• The International Labour Organisation (ILO) in a new report on November 28, 2022 warned that the Asia-Pacific region still lacks 22 million jobs in 2022, and this number is projected to increase to 26 million in 2023 given the headwinds to growth in the current geopolitical global and regional context.
• In its report, `Asia-Pacific Employment and Social Outlook 2022: Rethinking sectoral strategies for a human-centered future of work`, ILO says the employment numbers in the region in 2022 were 2.0 per cent above the pre-Covid-19 crisis level of 2019, recovering from the loss of over 57 million jobs in 2020

5. Saudi Arabia unveils plan for massive airport in capital

• Saudi Arabia on November 28, 2022 announced plans for a new airport in Riyadh intended to spur rapid growth in the capital while advancing the kingdom`s ambitious aviation goals.
• The airport, set to accommodate 120 million travellers by 2030 and 185 million travellers by 2050, will be named after 86-year-old King Salman and was announced by his son, 37-year-old de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, according to the official Saudi Press Agency.
• `The airport project is in line with Saudi Arabia`s vision to transform Riyadh to be among the top ten city economies in the world and to support the growth of Riyadh`s population to 15-20 million people by 2030, SPA said. The city`s current population is fewer than eight million

6. 110,000 children, adolescents died from AIDS-related causes in 2021: UNICEF

• Around 110,000 children and adolescents died from AIDS related causes during 2021, United Nations Children Fund`s (UNICEF) global snapshot on children and HIV and AIDS said on November 28, 2022.
• Meanwhile, another 310,000 were newly infected, raising the total number of young people living with HIV to 2.7 million. UNICEF has warned that ending AIDS among children and adolescents will continue to be a distant dream.
• Ahead of the World AIDS Day to be observed on Dec 1, UNICEF has warned that progress in HIV prevention and treatment of children, adolescents and pregnant women has nearly flatlined over the past three years, with many regions still not at pre-Covid-19 service coverage


7. US weighs sending 100-mile strike weapon to Ukraine

• The Pentagon is considering a Boeing proposal to supply Ukraine with cheap, small precision bombs fitted onto abundantly available rockets, allowing Kyiv to strike far behind Russian lines as the West struggles to meet demand for more arms.
• US and allied military inventories are shrinking, and Ukraine faces an increasing need for more sophisticated weapons as the war drags on. Boeing`s proposed system, dubbed Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB), is one of about a half-dozen plans for getting new munitions into production for Ukraine and America`s Eastern European allies, industry sources said.
• Although the United States has rebuffed requests for the 185-mile (297km) range ATACMS missile, the GLSDB`s 94-mile (150km) range would allow Ukraine to hit valuable military targets that have been out of reach and help it continue pressing its counterattacks by disrupting Russian rear areas

8. World`s largest volcano erupts for first time since 1984

• Hawaii`s Mauna Loa, the largest active volcano in the world, has erupted for the first time in nearly 40 years, US authorities said, as emergency crews went on alert on November 28, 2022.
• Flows of lava remained `contained` within the summit caldera of Mauna Loa, but the eruption could pose a threat to nearby residents should conditions change, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported at 11:45pm local time on Sunday, some 15 minutes after the eruption inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
• `At this time, lava flows are contained within the summit area and are not threatening downslope communities,` the USGS said on its website, noting that residents of the area should review preparedness procedures


9. Turkiye, Egypt to restore full diplomatic ties, reappoint ambassadors

• After years of tension, a handshake between Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and Egypt`s President Abdel Fattah alSisi last week opened the door to a flurry of back-door diplomacy between intelligence officials, two sources said.
• Intelligence delegations from the two sides met in Egypt at the weekend, said a regional source with knowledge of the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity.
• The second source, a senior Turkish official, said `significant` discussions had begun between them, and Turkiye and Egypt are set to begin talks on military, political and commercial issues including energy projects


10. S.M. Muneer passes away

• S.M. Muneer, a senior leader of the business community and chairman of Din Group of Industries, passed away on Monday due to a cardiac arrest.
• Funeral prayer will be held after Zuhar at 1:30pm at Al Hamra Mosque on Tuesday.
• Mr Muneer always remained at the forefront to resolve the business community’s issues with the government. He attended his last function at the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry on November 28, 2022. “Mr Muneer came at the function at 12:15pm. He was looking fine and also addressed the businessmen and left the function at 2:30pm,” Kati President Farazur Rahman said, adding that at 8pm the business community heard the shocking news of his passing away
