1. Washington pledges support for Islamabad`s anti-TTP efforts

• The United States and Pakistan have a shared interest in combating threats to regional security, such as the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (T TP) and Washington will support the Pakistan government`s efforts to combat terrorism in all its forms, a State Department spokesperson told Dawn on Tuesday.
• On Monday, the outlawed TTP had asked its combatants to carry out attacks across the country because of alleged `unabated` operations by security forces against militants in the southern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
• Deploring the outlawed TTP`s decision to end its ceasefire with the government of Pakistan, the United Nations also expressed grave concern over the move that, they fear, could lead to increased suffering for civilians in the country


2. Bajwa hands army baton to Munir

• Gen Asim Munir, an infantry officer from Frontier Force Regiment, on November 29, 2022 assumed command of the Pakistan Army from Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa amidst deepening political and economic crises and an aggravating security situation.
• The change of command ceremony at the hockey stadium next to General Headquarters was witnessed by retired and serving officers of the armed forces, government officials, political leaders and Islamabad based foreign military attachés and advisers.
• Gen Munir, who was commissioned in service in 1986, was promoted and designated as Chief of Army Staff last Thursday to succeed Gen Bajwa


3. Pakistan receives $500m from AIIB

• Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on November 29, 2022 announced State Bank of Pakistan received $500 million from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) that would help mitigate damages caused by devastating floods. The Beijing-based multilateral lending agency has transferred $500 million today, as per their board`s approval, to the State Bank of Pakistan as programme financing, the minister announced through his Twitter account.
• This amount is co-financing of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded Building Resilience with Active Countercyclical Expenditure (BRACE) programme for Pakistan. The board of the AIIB approved the funds on Nov 10.
• The ADB had late last month transferred a $1.5bn loan under BRACE programme for budgetary support and to help flood related rehabilitation and reconstruction activities

4. Khar talks security, economy with Kabul regime

• Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar concluded a one-day trip to Kabul on November 29, 2022, where she held wide-ranging talks with Afghan Taliban leadership on regional security issues and economic cooperation, Dawn.com reported.
• Ms Khar is the first minister to travel to the Afghan capital since the government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took over in April this year.
• The Foreign Office (FO) said in a statement that she met acting Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttagi shortly after landing in Kabul. Pakistan`s Special Representative for Afghanistan Mohammad Sadiq was also part of the delegation. The two sides discussed matters related to enhanced regional security with mutual cooperation, including in countering terrorism, and issues and policies which would impact the interim government`s engagement with the international community, the statement said


5. ECC okays cut in base tariff for tube wells under Kissan package

• The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet on November 29, 2022 reduced the base tariff for electric tube wells under the Kissan package, fixed tobacco minimum indicative prices for crop 2023 and approved Rs15 billion for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
• The ECC meeting chaired by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar also approved a summary seeking a uniform tariff for K-Electric besides approving supplementary grants for various ministries and divisions.
• Under the Kissan package, the base tariff for electric tube wells was cut by Rs3.60 to Rs13 per kWh from Nov 1 to compensate farmers for the damage caused by the floods and heavy rains.
• Of the amount approved for the ECP for the current fiscal year, Rs5bn will be disbursed immediately while the balance will be released in tranches

6. `Sitara-i-Imtiaz to be conferred on journalist Ziauddin`

• The government will confer posthumous Sitara-i-Imtiaz on veteran journalist Mohammad Ziauddin for his contribution in the field of journalism.
• Besides, a chair will also be set up at the Centre of Excellence for Journalism in IBA Karachi in his honour, said Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal.
• He was speaking at a condolence reference organised by the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives on the first death anniversary of the veteran journalist on Tuesday.
• Calling Mr Ziauddin an institution in the field of journalism, Mr Iqbal said: `There is a dire need of hour to produce more journalists like late Ziauddin to continue the legacy

8. Qatar announces first major gas deal for Germany

• Qatar on November 29, 2022 announced its first major deal to send liquefied natural gas to Germany as Europe scrambles to find alternatives to Russian energy sources.
• Qatar`s Energy Minister Saad Sherida al-Kaabi said up to two million tons of gas a year would be sent for at least 15 years from 2026, and that state-run Qatar Energy was discussing other possible deals for Europe`s biggest economy.
• Kaabi, who is also QatarEnergy`s chief executive, said so many European and Asian countries now want natural gas that he did not have enough negotiators to cope.


9. Christians now a minority in England and Wales, census released

• Fewer than half of people in England and Wales identify as Christian, according to census data released on November 29, 2022, underlining a landmark shift towards secularism in multicultural Britain.
• The findings from the 10-yearly census, carried out in 2021, came just over a month after Rishi Sunak became Britain`s first Hindu prime minister.
