1. Rear Admiral Zubair takes over as Commander Central Punjab

• Rear Admiral Muhammad Zubair Shafique has assumed the charge of Commander Central Punjab (COMCEP).
• COMCEP exercises command over all Pakistan Navy Units/Establishments from Bahawalpur to Wazirabad and is also the Commandant of Pakistan Navy War College, Lahore.
• Rear Admiral Muhammad Zubair Shafique was commissioned in Operations Branch of Pakistan Navy in 1988. He has a distinguished career with wide-ranging Command and Staff appointments.


2. SBP unveils commemorative coin at 550th birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak Sahib

• Governor SBP Dr. Reza Baqir unveiled the commemorative coin of Rs.550 to mark the 550th birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak at State Bank of Pakistan.
• A delegation of Sikh Community led by Sardar Ramesh Singh Khalsa, Patron in Chief Pakistan Sikh Council & Member Prime Minister’s Taskforce for Evacuee Trust Property Board, comprising members of Pakistan Sikh Council and Baba Guru Nanak Darbar also attended the ceremony.
• This was the first time in the history of the country that a coin in memory of a religious personality is issued.
• Three reasons behind the issuance of the commemorative coin in the name of Baba Guru Nanak. The first is that through this gesture, State Bank has contributed in the national efforts to support inter-religious harmony. Second, the coin will underscore the message of peace taught by Baba Guru Nanak. Third, this initiative is to promote peace, which enhances economic prosperity which is a key goal of the State Bank of Pakistan


3. AEDB inks accords for 11 wind power projects

• Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) on November 12, 2019 signed Implementation Agreements (IAs) with the representatives of 11 wind power projects with the cumulative electricity capacity of around 560 MW.
• AEDB Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Rana Abdul Jabbar signed the agreements on the behalf of government of Pakistan.
• It is worth mentioning here that the Central Power Purchase Agency (CPPA) had on Monday signed an agreement with the representatives of 11 wind power projects, to which the AEDB had issued Letters of Support last week.
• The projects, to be developed in Jhimpir, Sindh, have the cumulative capacity of 560 MW. It is estimated that these projects would provide around two billion units of clean energy annually


4. MPA from Orakzai named CM`s focal person

• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has appointed MPA Ghazan Jamal from Orakzai tribal district as chief minister`s focal person on the newly-merged districts` annual development programme and accelerated implementation programme (AIP).
• A notification issued from the chief minister`s secretariat here on Tuesday said that Ghazan Jamal would monitor and track development expenditures in the merged districts under the multibillion rupees ADP and AIP initiatives.
• The focal person would work in conjunction with provincial finance minister and planning and development department.
• The notification said Mr Jamal would brief the chief minister on progress every month or whenever required.


5. Kabul to swap captives with Taliban in hopes of direct talks

• Afghanistan will release two senior Taliban commanders and a leader of the Haqqani militant group in exchange for an American and an Australian professor who were kidnappe d in 2016, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said on November 12, 2019.
• The government`s decision to free Anas Haqqani and two other Taliban commanders in a prisoner swap was taken in the hope of securing direct talks with the Taliban, who have hitherto refused to engage with what they call an illegitimate `puppet` regime in Kabul.
• `In order to pave the way for a face-to-face negotiations with the Taliban, the government has decided to free Taliban prisoners in exchange for two university professors,` Mr Ghani said in a televised speech.
• The president said Anas Haqqani and Taliban commanders Haji Mali Khan and Hafiz Rashid were being released


6. Trump meets Erdogan today, signals intent to mend ties

• US President Donald Trump will welcome his Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan at the White House on November 13, 2019 as part of a move aimed at improving relations between the two countries.
• Relations between the two NATO allies strained last month when Turkey invaded Syria, ignoring US pleas not to do so.
• President Trump reacted strongly and threatened to `destroy` the Turkish economy if Mr Erdogan were to continue his campaign against the Kurds in northern Syria. The visit, however, shows that the US leader has not only changed his mind but is also willing to publicly acknowledge this improvement.
• The first indication of this change came late last month, when President Trump made it clear that he was not going to strain America`s relations with a key Nato ally for Syria. `Let someone else fight over this long-bloodstained sand (Syria),` he said at a White House news briefing.


7. Spanish king and queen arrive in Cuba for first royal visit

• Spain`s King Felipe VI began an unprecedented visit to Cuba on November 12, 2019 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the capital Havana at a time of increased tensions between the island nation and the United States.
• King Felipe is travelling alongside Queen Letizia in the first state visit by a Spanish monarch to the former colony, one of the last to gain independence from Madrid in 1898.
• The capital a magnet for millions of tourists every year is celebrating the anniversary of its foundation on Nov 16, 1519.


8. EU court says Israel settlement goods must carry label

• The EU`s top court ruled on November 12, 2019 that food products from occupied Palestinian territories must be labelled as such, drawing an angry response from Israel which slammed a `double standard`.
• The European Court of Justice said that under EU rules on food labelling, it must be clear where products are from particularly if they come from Israeli settlements.
• That way, it said, consumers can make choices based on `ethical considerations and considerations relating to the observance of international law`.
• The ECJ ruling effectively backs the EU guidelines issued in 2015 on labelling goods from Israeli-occupied areas, which also prompted a furious response. At the time, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu compared them to the Nazi boycott of Jewish businesses.


9. FIFA bans Peruvian football official for life

• A South American football official acquitted of racketeering in the US has been banned for life by FIFA for taking million-dollar bribes.
• FIFA said on November 12, 2019 its ethics committee judges found `overwhelming evidence` Manuel Burga got or was promised a total of $6.6 million in bribes linked to marketing deals for the Copa America and Copa Libertadores. FIFA also fined Burga 1 million Swiss francs ($1 million).
• Burga signed contracts as president of the Peruvian football federation that were used as evidence by American authorities to get guilty pleas and convictions from other senior officials at South American soccer body CONMEBOL.
• He was cleared of a racketeering conspiracy charge in December 2017, days after Juan Angel Napout of Paraguay and Jose Maria Marin of Brazil were found guilty by the same court


10. Ex-world record holder banned

• Former half-marathon world record holder Kenya`s Abraham Kiptumhas been given a four-year doping ban, the Athletics Integrity Unit said on November 11, 2019.
• The ban follows irregularities that showed up on Kiptumhas` biological passport, which is used to track potential doping.
• `The World Athletics Disciplinary Tribunal has banned the long-distance runner for four-years with effect from 28 April 2019,` a statement on Twitter said on Monday.
• The Tribunal suspects the 30-year-old Kiptumhas of blood doping, but the athlete has denied any form of doping or blood manipulation.
