1. Pakistan likely to exit FATF `grey list` this week

• Pakistan is expected to finally exit the `increased monitoring list` commonly known as grey list of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) on Oct 21, after languishing in the infamous category for almost 52 months.
• `The first FATF Plenary under the two-year Singapore Presidency of T.
• Raja Kumar will take place on October 20-21, 2022,` said the Paris based global watchdog on dirty money. Delegates representing 206members of the Global Network and observer organisations, including the International Monetary Fund, the United Nations, the World Bank, Interpol and the Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units, will participate in the Working Group and Plenary meetings in Paris, it added.
• On the conclusion of the two-day deliberations, decisions of the plenary would be announced


2. Imran stuns rivals, grabs six NA seats

• Though Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf managed to secure six out of eight National Assembly seats in the crucial by-election on October 16, 2022, the victory might have brought bittersweet moments for the party as the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) managed to clinch two NA-157 Multan and NA-237 Karachi which were bagged by the PTI in the 2018 general elections.
• Initial results show that other major parties, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM-P) and the Awami National Party (ANP), could not manage to grab even a single NA seat as Imran Khan the PTI`s candidate on seven seats emerged victorious against his rivals in six constituencies.
• However, PML-N managed to win one Punjab Assembly seat out of the three as the rest went to PTI.
• In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Imran Khan managed to upstage both JUI-F and ANP

3. Five `terrorists` killed in Splinji operation

• Nearly half a dozen suspected terrorists were killed and three security personnel sustained injuries in a gun battle during an intelligence-based operation in Splinji in Mastung district, on October 16, 2022.
• `The suspect terrorists were planning to attack pilgrims and security forces,` claimed a spokesman for the counter-terrorism department of police, adding that heavy consignment of arms and ammunition was seized during the search of their hideouts.
• The exchange of fire, which continued till late night, took place in the same area where a roadside bomb explosion had recently claimed several lives


4. First-ever surgical skills lab to be established in PIMS

• The first-ever Surgical Skills Laboratory (SSL) will be set up at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).
• Apart from donations by health practitioners from across the globe, the Edhi Foundation has pledged to donate Rs30 million for this noble cause and the laboratory would be called the Abdul Sattar Edhi Higher Surgical Skill Laboratory. The announcement was made during the fifth Rhinocon conference held in Islamabad. The two day conference, which concluded on Sunday, was attended by more than 800 delegates who benefited from the lectures, presentations and panel discussions leading to consensus building and symposium.
• Panel discussions were conducted by renowned ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeons from Pakistan, Malaysia and the United Kingdom


5. Punjab govt defers Wasa`s proposal to rationalise tariff

• The Punjab government has deferred a proposal of Lahore`s cash starved Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) seeking rationalisation (upward revision) of the water and sewerage tariff for the domestic and commercial consumers.
• The proposal was unanimously approved at a recent meeting but, later, it was mentioned as `deferred`in the minutes of the meeting signed by the members of the chief minister-led Lahore Development Authority (LDA) governing body, Dawn has learnt.
• `The proposal / working paper for rationalising the water and sewerage tariff was placed before the authority meeting presided over by Chief Minister Parvez Elahi.
• The participants unanimously approved this considering the worst financial condition of Wasa

6. Project to study animal diseases launched

• The Cholistan University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (CUVAS), Bahawalpur, has embarked upon four research projects costing over Rs10 million to explore the diseases of animals and their treatment.
• This was disclosed by CUVAS Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Sajjad Ahmed here on October 16, 2022.
• Talking to Dawn, the VC said these research projects won by the university`s teachers after a tough competition were granted by Higher Education Commission (HEC) under its National Research Programme of Universities (NRPU)


7. Biden will act `methodically` in re-evaluating ties with Riyadh

• US President Joe Biden will act `methodically` in deciding how to respond to Saudi Arabia over oil output cuts, but options include changes to US security assistance, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said on October 16, 2022.
• Sullivan, speaking on CNN, said no changes to the US-Saudi relationship were imminent as Biden re-evaluates it.
• `And so the president isn`t going to act precipitously. He is going to act methodically, strategically and he`s going to take his time to consult members of both parties, and also to have an opportunity for Congress to return so that he can sit with them in person and work through the options,` Sullivan said


8. Bakhmut: a town where Russians are still advancing

• Days are spent under a hail of shells, and night brings no respite for Ukrainian soldiers as enemy forces draw ever closer in Bakhmut, one of the last towns where Russian troops are still advancing.
• The metallic boom of shelling echoes across the hills surrounding the small town, home to 70,000 people before the war.
• Russia has been falling back in its offensive but in Bakhmut, unlike across most of the front line, Ukrainians are on the defensive.
• They face the `most difficult` challenges, President Volodymyr Zelensky said this weekend.
• Ukrainian troops still control the northern and western parts of the city


9. Xi hails China`s rise, demands unity at Congress

• President Xi Jinping kicked off China`s five-yearly Communist Party Congress on October 16, 2022 with a wide-ranging speech highlighting signature policies including Beijing`s zero-Covid approach, hailing its anti-graft efforts, opposing a `Cold War mentality` in international diplomacy, and demanding unity around his leadership as he seeks to rule for a historic third term.
• `Unity is strength, and victory requires unity,` Xi said in an opening address to 2,300 delegates after walking on stage to a thunderous reception at the Great Hall of the People.
• The speech gave Xi an opportunity to defend his government`s achievements to the conclave`s roughly 2,300 delegates, who will vote during the weeklong Congress on the party leadership for the next five years.
• Xi and the party`s other top brass are likely to be unveiled on October 23, the day after the Congress closes. If picked as party leader for another five-year term as expected, he is almost certain to be elected president at the annual meeting of China`s National People`s Congress in March


10. `Historic day` as Namibia stun Sri Lanka in World Cup opener

• Jan Frylinck smashed 44 runs and took two wickets as Namibia hammered Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka by 55 runs to cause a major upset in the opening match of the Twenty20 World Cup on October 16, 2022.
• The left-handed Frylinck and JJ Smit, who made an unbeaten 31, lifted Namibia to 163-7 with their 69-run seventh-wicket stand after being invited to bat first in Geelong.
• Sri Lanka were then bowled out for 108 in 19 overs with David Wiese, Frylinck, Bernard Scholtz and Ben Shikongo taking two wickets each in the team`s first of three opening-round matches.
• The African minnows are on course for a second straight Super 12 place after achieving the feat on their T20 World Cup debut last year in the United Arab Emirates
