1. Journalist`s killing in Kenya shocks nation, prompts probe demand

• After the killing of senior journalist Arshad Sharif, 50, purportedly at the hands of Kenyan police near Nairobi sent shockwaves through the nation, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on October 24, 2022 requested Kenyan President William Ruto to conduct an impartial probe into the mysterious shooting which occurred in the small hours of Monday.
• The killing of Mr Sharif, who had been in a self-imposed exile, was widely condemned as global and national journalist bodies, politicians, and civil society issued statements denouncing the brutal killing and demanded a fair investigation to ascertain the truth.
• The National Assembly passed a resolution seeking a swift probe into the incident that happened 40km from the Kenyan capital. The news of the death was shared by his wife on Twitter, from where it spread like wildfire and remained part of headlines on mainstream and social media


2. PM arrives in Saudi Arabia to attend investment summit

• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Saudi Arabia on October 24, 2022 for a two-day official visit where he will meet Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman and attend the Saudi Future Investment Initiative Summit.
• The prime minister is undertaking the visit on the invitation of Crown Prince bin Salman. At the airport, the prime minister was received by Riyadh Governor Faisal bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
• `During his stay in Riyadh, the prime minister would hold consultations with the Saudi crown prince to review the longstanding fraternal relations, with a view to further strengthening the multifaceted cooperation, especially in the economic field,` the Foreign Office said in a statement

3. Accord signed with ADB for $1.5bn loan

• Asian Development Bank (ADB) on October 24, 2022 signed an agreement with Pakistan to provide a $1.5 billion loan for budgetary support and help flood related rehabilitation and reconstruction activities.
• The loan agreement was signed by ADB`s Country Director Yong Ye and Secretary of Economic Affairs Division (EAD) Kazim Niaz. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, EAD Minister Ayaz Sadiq and ADB`s Director General for Central & West Asia Region Eugene Zhukov witnessed the ceremony.
• The loan, provided under ADB`s Building Resilience with Active Countercyclical Expenditures (BRACE) Programme, will help fund the government`s $2.3bn countercyclical development expenditure programme designed to cushion the impacts of external shocks, including the Russian invasion of Ukraine


4. Israel strikes Damascus area, injures soldier

• Israel struck the vicinity of the Syrian capital Damascus on October 24, 2022, injuring one soldier, the Syrian defence ministry said, days after a similar strike.
• `The Israeli enemy carried out airstrikes from the north of the occupied Palestinian territories targeting sites near Damascus,` the ministry said in a statement, adding that a soldier was injured during the rare daytime attack.
• Israel, which rarely comments on individual strikes but has acknowledge d carrying out hundreds, usually launches air strikes on Syria overnight

5. Lives of older people at risk in flood-hit areas: survey

• A new survey on the impact of floods on older people in Pakistan reveals that hundreds of lives are needlessly being put at risk due to decimation of health services and the rise of diseases like malaria and diarrhoea, which can be killers for older people with weaker immune systems.
• The survey from Help Age International highlighted that 87 per cent of older people in flood-affected areas of Pakistan have a health condition, but only 51pc have access to health care, while the government and UN assessment reports are largely ignoring their needs and rights.
• `So many older people with serious health conditions lost their medication in the floods. The health centres were either swept away or destroyed, along with the contents. And many older people cannot reach the health centres that are functioning and even if they can, they cannot afford to buy the medication they need

6. Sunak set to become UK`s first PM with Indian roots

• The race to `claim` Rishi Sunak was very much on October 24, 2022, when fellow Conservative party member and leadership hopeful Penny Mordaunt dropped out of the race to give the former chancellor a clear path to 10 Downing Street.
• According to Talkware data, the chatter on social media around Sunak`s appointment was more positive than negative an unusual trend for a newly appointed prime minister.

7. Kyrgyzstan detains border deal critics over `coup` plans

• Authorities in Kyrgyzstan have detained more than 20 politicians and civil servants accused of organising riots over a border demarcation deal with the neighbouring Central Asian country Uzbekistan, a rights group said on October 24, 2022.
• The Kylym Chamy rights group said that 22 people had been detained across the politically volatile ex-Soviet country and were accused of planning a coup attempt and violent protests. The people detained are part of a group that is critical of a draft government deal with Uzbekistan that critics say could see Bishkek hand over control of a key dam to Uzbekistan.
• Water is an increasingly scarce resource in Central Asia and the Kempir-Abad dam was constructed when both countries were part of the Soviet Union.
• Disputes over borders and resources still routinely flare three decades after the collapse of the Soviet Union and violence regularly erupts on Kyrgyzstan`s border with neighbouring Tajikistan

8. Plastic recycling remains a `myth`, says Greenpeace study

• Plastic recycling rates are declining even as production shoots up, according to a Greenpeace USA report out October 24, 2022 that blasted industry claims of creating an efficient, circular economy as `fiction.
• Titled `Circular Claims Fall Flat Again, the study found that of 51 million tons of plastic waste generated by US households in 2021, only 2.4 million tons were recycled, or around five percent.
• After peaking in 2014 at 10 percent, the trend has been decreasing, especially since China stopped accepting the West`s plastic waste in 2018.
• Virgin production of non-recycled plastic, that is meanwhile is rapidly rising as the petrochemical industry expands, lowering costs


9. Lost 17th-century warship found in Sweden

• Swedish maritime archaeologists have discovered the long-lost sister vessel of the iconic 17th-century warship `Vasa`, which sank on its maiden voyage, the Swedish Museum of Wrecks said on October 24, 2022.
• Launched in 1629, `Applet` (The Apple) was built by the same shipbuilder as the famed 69-metre (225-foot) `Vasa`, which is now on display in Stockholm after being salvaged in the 1960s.
• `Our pulses raced when we saw how similar the wreck was to Vasa,` said Jim Hansson, maritime archaeologist at the museum.
• The huge shipwreck was discovered in December 2021 in a strait off the island of Vaxholm just outside the capital, Stockholm, according to the museum
