1. PM calls for joint efforts to tap clean energy

• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on October 25, 2022 underlined the need for combined efforts to explore the true potential of clean energy resources, coupled with utilisation of modern tools and technical gadgets to fully harness the talent of young generations and explore future avenues for progress and prosperity.
• Speaking at the Future Investment Initiative conference, he said that clean energy potential would be the new driver of economic prosperity and stressed upon the world community to come forward and support these joint efforts.
• `Nothing could be of more importance to us than this very challenge: how to ensure that our collective tomorrow is better than our today. And that we are ready for it; that we have the tools, skills and technology which enables us not just to navigate the complex world of tomorrow but to also shape it today in a manner that has the most beneficial impact on humanity,` he added


2. Online system launched for assessment in Punjab schools

• The Punjab Examination Commission (PEC) on October 25, 2022 launched an online Item Bank System (IBS) for assessment of children from class 1 to 8 in 65,000 public sector schools of the province.
• The School Education Department (SED) had abolished board examinations for primary and middle level to save children from extraburdenin2019.
• The Punjab Cabinet approved the Assessment Policy Framework (APF) in December 2019 and SED notified the policy in February 2020.
• Punjab Minister for School Education Murad Raas inaugurated the assessment system on October 25, 2022

3. UN asks Kenya to hold thorough inquiry into Arshad`s death

• The United Nations has urged Kenya to conduct a thorough investigation into the mysterious death of a Pakistani journalist, Arshad Sharif, and share the findings with the public.
• `I saw this tragic report of his death. I think the circumstances need to be investigated thoroughly, and the Kenyan authorities said they would,` Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesman for the UN Secretary General told journalists in New York.
• He also underlined the importance of `the results of the investigation being shared quickly.
• At a Monday afternoon news briefing in Washington, Spokesperson Ned Price reiterated the US administration`s call for `a full investigation by the government of Kenya` into Mr Sharif`s death because `it`s not entirely clear what led to his death


4. Plan to use EVMs `stunt` to delay Punjab LG polls: CEC

• The Punjab government`s move to conduct local government polls through electronic voting machines (EVMs) was `a stunt meant to drag feet on the already delayed electoral exercise,` Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja said on October 25, 2022.
• The remarks came while the CEC was heading a three-member bench thatheard the case relating to delay in the holding of LG polls.
• During the hearing, Punjab Chief Secretary Abdullah Khan Sumbal said that Punjab Assembly has passed a bill to conduct the polls using EVMs and it will become law in the next 10 days.
• `You have intentionally added EVMs to create problems,` CEC Raja said to Mr Sumbal

5. Mansehra gets first woman food controller

• Uzma Shah has become the first woman in the history of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to have been appointed as the district food controller of Mansehra.
• She assumed charge of her responsibilities on October 25, 2022.
• “I am glad as this is a great honour for me to be appointed the first-ever female district food controller in the province,” she told reporters after taking charge of her office.
• Ms Shah, who had become the first-ever female assistant commissioner in the province in 2015, said she worked hard to prove that women could do better than their male counterparts in any profession

6. Sudan forces kill protester on coup anniversary

• Sudanese security forces shot dead a protester on October 25, 2022 as thousands of pro-democracy activists marked the first anniversary of a coup that derailed a transition to civilian rule and sent hunger and inflation soaring.
• Waving Sudanese flags, thousands of demonstrators in Khartoum and its suburbs defied security forces who have carried out deadly crackdowns on past rallies, demanding that `soldiers go back to the barracks`.
• `No partnership, no negotiation with the put schists, protesters chanted, calling out what has become a prodemocracy rallying cry


7. Germany hashes out compromise to allow China smaller stake port deal

• Germany may allow China`s Cosco to take a smaller stake than originally planned in a Hamburg port terminal, in what an economy ministry source on October 25, 2022 described as an `emergency solution` to approve the deal but mitigate the impact.
• Shipping giant Cosco made a bid last year to take a 35 percent stake in one of logistics firm H HLA`s three terminals in Germany`s largest port, but the German coalition has been divided over whether to let the deal go ahead.
• The compromise would see Berlin approving a sale of 24.9pc of the terminal to Cosco, several government sources said. It will be discussed by the cabinet on Wednesday

8. Six Palestinians killed in Israeli raids on West Bank

• Six Palestinians were killed in sweeping Israeli raids on October 25, 2022 in the occupied West Bank as the army targeted an emerging armed group, and thousands later massed for the funerals of the alleged gunmen.
• The Palestinian health ministry said five people were killed in Nablus in the northern West Bank, where Israel confirmed an overnight operation targeted the `Lion`s Den`, a new group it blames for multiple recent attacks.
• Another Palestinian died from a gunshot wound to the chest during overnight clashes with Israeli forces in Nabi Saleh, north of Ramallah, the health ministry said


9. Year`s second partial solar eclipse awes Pakistanis

• The second partial solar eclipse of the year was observed in several areas of the country on Tuesday, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
• The solar eclipse when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, casting its shadow down onto our planet was visible from most of Europe, Northern Africa, the Middle East and western parts of Asia while it was partially visible in Pakistan.
• In Pakistan, the celestial spectacle began at 1:58pm and ended at 6:02pm, with the greatest eclipse being occurred at 4pm


10. Stoinis stars as Australia bounce back to beat Sri Lanka by seven wickets

• Marcus Stoinis smashed an unbeaten 59 off 18 balls to power Australia to a seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka and reinvigorate their Twenty20 World Cup defence on October 25, 2022.
• Chasing 158 for victory, the hosts depended on Stoinis`s rapid-fire knock to achieve their target with 21 balls to spare in Perth and bounce back from their opening hammering to New Zealand.
• Stoinis brought up his fifty in 17 balls, the fastest for an Australian in a T20L Next up for the hosts are old rivals England on Friday in Melbourne.
• Australia now have one win and one defeat from their first two games in the Super 12 stage
