1. Khunjerab pass temporarily opens to facilitate traders

• The Pakistan-China border at Khunjerab was opened till month end to facilitate bilateral trade.
• Two containers carrying medical equipment donated by the Xinjiang province to Gilgit-Baltistan police department arrived at the Khunjerab pass following its opening.
• The ministry of foreign affairs had written a letter to the China embassy in Pakistan on August 18, proposing that the border should be kept opened till December 31 to facilitate trade activities


2. WAPDA begins process of jobs for GB

• As the construction activities on strategically important Diamer-Basha Dam Project are picking up pace, the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has started the process for providing thousands of jobs to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) for poverty alleviation in the area and socio-economic uplift of the local people.
• WAPDA has advertised as many as 124 vacancies ranging from Basic Pay Scale (BPS) 6 to 16, against which only the people belonging to District Diamer, Gilgit-Baltistan will be recruited


3. US Senators demand designation of India as ‘Country of Particular Concern’

• The “Coalition to Stop Genocide in India”, a broad coalition of Indian American and US-based civil rights organizations and activists, Tuesday welcomed a letter written by fourteen US Senators to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stressing that US law requires the US Government to consider a federal commission’s recommendations that some countries be designated as a Countries of Particular Concern (CPC), which is the US Government’s official term for countries that are the world’s worst offenders of religious freedom.
• The bipartisan letter was signed by ten Republican senators and four Democratic senators and sent to Secretary Pompeo this month. Should the US government decide not to accept the recommendations made by the United States Commission for International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), a federal commission, the letter requires the State Department to inform US Congress of its reasons within 30 days of making that determination


4. Major powers dismiss US sanctions on Iran

• Iran said on September 20, 2020 its arch-foe the United States is facing `maximum isolation` after major powers dismissed a unilateral US declaration that UN sanctions on Tehran were back in force.
• The Trump administration said the sanctions had been re-activated under the `snapback` mechanism in a landmark 2015 nuclear treaty despite Washington having withdrawn from the deal


5. Russian jets strike rebel-held bastion in Syria

• Syrian opposition sources said Russian jets bombed rebel-held northwestern Syria on September 20, 2020 in the most extensive strikes since a Turkish-Russian deal halted major fighting with a ceasefire nearly six months ago.
• Witnesses said the warplanes struck the western outskirts of Idlib city and that there was heavy artillery shelling in the mountainous Jabal al Zawya region in southern Idlib from nearby Syrian army outposts. There were no immediate reports of casualties


6. Court halts ban on WeChat download

• A US judge on September 20, 2020 blocked the government`s ban on WeChat downloads, hours before it was due to take effect in an ongoing technology and espionage battle between Washington and Beijing.
• The Trump administration had ordered a ban on downloads of the messaging platform WeChat as well as hugely popular video-sharing app TikTok, both owned by Chinese companies. Both bans have now been suspended


7. 14 ancient tombs discovered at Saqqara

• Egypt`s antiquities ministry announced on September 20, 2020 the discovery of 14 coffins in the Saqqara area that had lain buried for two and a half thousand years.
• The tombs were found two days ago during an archaeological dig, and follow 13 wooden sarcophagus discovered in the same burial spot last week, the ministry said in a statement. The vast Saqqara necropolis south of Cairo is part of the ancient capital of Memphis, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Saqqara is the site of the colossal rectangular-based step Pyramid of Djoser


8. Belgium’s crown princess begins military training

• Belgium’s Crown Princess Elisabeth recently began her military training as she prepares to one day take the throne.
• Elisabeth took part in a military initiation training at Elsenborn Belgian army camp in Butgenbach on Thursday, with photos showing the 18-year-old royal dressed in army fatigues and shooting guns


9. Pogacar crowned Tour de France champion

• Slovenian rookie Tadej Pogacar won the Tour de France on September 20, 2020, riding triumphantly into Paris in the race leader’s yellow jersey at just 21 years old.
• Pogacar became the Tour’s youngest champion since 1904 as Ireland’s Sam Bennett won the 21st and final stage after the eight-lap dash around the iconic Champs-Elysees to clinch the green sprint points jersey


10. Habib Jalib`s son passes away

• Revolutionary poet Habib Jalib`s son Nasir Jalib passed away in Lahore after a protracted illness. He was 55.
• Nasir Jalib used to hold reference on his father`s death anniversary. He also wrote a book Rudad-i-Wafa on the struggle and life of his father.
