1. Two High Commission officials expelled by India
• India on May 31, 2020 expelled two officials of the Pakistani High Commission in Delhi accusing them of espionage a charge, which was immediately rejected by Pakistan as `false and unsubstantiated` The officials were identified as Abid Hussain Abid, 42, an assistant in the Pakistani mission, and Mohammad Tahir Khan, 44, a clerk.
• Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in a statement said they were `apprehended today by Indian law enforcement authorities for indulging in espionage activities`.
• The officials, according to Indian media, were allegedly obtaining documents about the Indian security establishment from a local person.
• Indian government later declared both of them persona non grata and asked them to leave the country within 24 hours
2. PIA to operate direct flight to New Jersey
• Following permission granted by the United States Department of Transport to Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) to operate direct flight to the US, PIA’s flight carrying 207 passengers departed for New Jersey from Islamabad on May 31, 2020.
• This was the first time a Pakistani aircraft operated a direct flight to New Jersey. “PIA flight PK-8711 carrying more than 200 passengers departed for New Jersey. PIA sought permission to operate direct flights to USA. If permission to operate direct flights is granted on a permanent basis, PIA intends to resume direct flights to America,”.
• After the September 11 attacks, US authorities had refused permission for direct flights because of security reasons, until now.
3. “No mask no fuel, no shopping” drive kicks off in Hazara
• No mask no fuel, no shopping”, drive once again started in Hazara division to restrict people in the wake of COVID-19.
• The drive was kicked off on the directives of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hazara Qazi Jameel ur Rehman, earlier on 12th May it was started all over the Hazara division with strict enforcement and showed good results.
• After relaxation in lockdown besides police department traders are also facing the threat of coronavirus, if traders would not follow the precautionary measures then they can become victims of the outbreak.
4. Prof Anwar Ahmed Zai passes away
• Noted educationist Prof Anwar Ahmed Zai, who died at a private hospital here after a brief illness early on May 31, 2 020.
• Prof Ahmed Zai had served as the chairman of the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK), the Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) and the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Mirpurkhas. He also served as the EDO Karachi and additional secretary of the provincial education department. At the time of his death, he was serving as the chairman of the Ziauddin University Examination Board.
• He leaves behind a son, who is a CSP officer, and a daughter, who is a doctor
5. Saudi government reopens Masjid-e-Nabvi (SAWW) for public today
• Saudi government on May 31, 2020 reopened Masjid-e-Nabvi (SAWW) for public.
• The faithfuls offered Fajr prayer in the mosque with strict compliance of the precautionary measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
• Strict precautionary measures including limiting the congregation to 40 percent of the mosque’s capacity at a time are being observed. The mosques in other cities of Saudi Arabia have also been reopened for offering prayers
6. Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem reopens after two months
• Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque compound, Islam’s third holiest site, reopened on May 31, 2020 after being closed for over two months because of the coronavirus pandemic. Dozens of worshippers in protective masks were let into the compound before the first prayers of the day, held in cool and windy conditions.
• Chanting “God is greatest, we will protect Al-Aqsa with our soul and blood”, the worshippers who gathered in front of the large wooden doors were welcomed by mosque director Omar al-Kiswani, who thanked them for their patience. The prayers followed a fraught previous day in annexed east Jerusalem, where the compound is located. Israeli police on Saturday shot dead a disabled Palestinian they mistakenly thought was armed, prompting furious condemnation from the Palestinians
7. SpaceX Crew Dragon docks with International Space Station ia/jm
• A SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule carrying two NASA astronauts docked Sunday with the International Space Station, the first time a crewed US spacecraft has performed the feat in nearly a decade.
• “Soft capture,” the moment when the spacecraft makes first contact and starts latching with the target vehicle, occurred at 10:16 am Eastern Time (1416 GMT)
8. Coronavirus cases top 6m across planet
• The number of coronavirus cases worldwide has topped six million as the disease spread rapidly across Latin America and political leaders feuded over how to deal with the pandemic.
• Much of the world is moving at varying speeds to lift lockdowns that have wrecked economies and stripped millions of their jobs while Muslims in Jerusalem and other cities flocked to newly reopened mosques on Sunday.
• But in Brazil the epicentre of South America`s outbreak with nearly 500,000confirmedcases,lagging only behind the US disagreement among its leaders over lockdown measures has hampered efforts to slow the outbreak.
9. 100-year-old Indonesian woman beats coronavirus
• A 100-year-old Indonesian woman has recovered from coronavirus, making her the country`s oldest survivor of the deadly respiratory illness.
• Kamtim, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, was discharged from hospital this week after a month of treatment in her hometown Surabaya, Indonesia`s second biggest city, officials said.
• East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa said she hoped Kamtim`s story would give a boost to at-risk residents the illness is especially dangerous for older people and those with chronic conditions
10. Former Olympic sprint champion Morrow dies at 84
• American sprinter Bobby Joe Morrow, who won three gold medals at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, died on May 30, 2020 at the age of 84.
• Morrow`s family said he died of natural causes at home in San Benito.
• Morrow won gold in the 100 and 200 metres and anchored the US to victory in the 4x100m relay, in which they set a world record. He joined US athletics great Jesse Owens as the only men to win those three events at a single Games a feat later matched by American Carl Lewis and Jamaican Usain Bolt
