1. Justice Hilali sworn in as first woman chief justice of PHC

• Justice Mussarat Hilali was on April 1, 2023 sworn in as the first female chief justice of the Peshawar High Court the acting charge she will hold till the appointment of a permanent incumbent by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP).
• Justice Hilali, who was appointed to the new position by President Arif Alvi on March 29, was administered the oath by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Haji Ghulam Ali at a simple ceremony. Besides other judges of the high court, lawyers, caretaker ministers and government officials attended the ceremony, which was held at Governor House.
• PHC chief justice Qaiser Rashid Khan retired on March 30 following which the senior puisne judge Justice Roohul Amin Khan served as acting chief justice for a day.
• Justice Hilali, who is the most senior judge of the high court, is likely to be appointed as the first permanent female chief justice once the JCP holds a meeting for that purpose. Her retirement is due on Aug 7.


2. Four soldiers martyred in Iran cross-border attack

• Four security personnel were martyred on Saturday in an attack launched by militants from the Iranian side of the border in Kech district of Balochistan, according to the military`s media wing.
• The security personnel were on a routine patrol when they were attacked by terrorists in the Jalgai sector of the Pakistan-Iran border, a statement released by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.
• The martyred soldiers were identified as Naik Shair Ahmed, Lance Naik Muhammad Asghar, Sepoy Muhammad Irfan and Sepoy Abdur Rasheed

3. Inflation sets another record, hits 35.4pc in March

• Consumer inflation raced to 35.4 per cent in March, the highest annual rise in prices on record, driven mainly by skyrocketing costs of food, electricity, beverage and transport, official data showed on April 1, 2023.
• Poor citizens are already feeling the brunt of such high inflation, which has become unrelenting on the back of a messy cocktail of factors like political instability, years of financial mismanagement, the rupee`s depreciation, and as the government scrambled to meet IMF conditions to unlock a desperately needed bailout.
• At least 20 people have been killed since the start of Ramazan in crowd crushes at food distribution centres across the country. `The way inflation is rising, I believe a famine-like situation has been simmering,` Shahida Wizarat, a Karachi-based analyst, told AFP


4. Only 16pc women in Quetta are employed, survey finds

• Results from Quetta urban household survey carried out by the World Bank reveals that only 16 percent of working-age women in the area participate in the labour market, compared to 72pc men.
• The `Women in the Workforce in Quetta` survey shows that along with experiencing low levels of labour market participation, women employed in urban Quetta mostly work in low-value-added activities, with a high prevalence of own-account, informal, and homebased work.
• At the same time, they perform jobs in line with socially accepted occupations


5. IsDB approves $13m for electricity

• The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) on April 1, 2023 approved additional financing of $13 million for the Central Asia South Asia Electricity Transmission and Trade Project (CASA-1000) that aims to meet the electricity demand in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
• The additional financing was approved by the IsDB board of executive directors during a meeting at its Jeddah-based headquarters. IsDB President and Group Chairman Dr Muhammad Al Jasser chaired the meeting, the bank said in a press release.
• The CASA-1000 project will facilitate the first electricity trade of 1,300MW of existing summertime hydropower surplus between the two regions, involving the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan in Central Asia and Afghanistan and Pakistan in South Asia
