1. Govt `categorically rejects` reports of trade with Israel

• The commerce ministry has categorically dismissed reports of trade with Israel after a Pakistani Jewish businessman said he had sent a food consignment to that country.
• In a statement released on April 2, 2023, the ministry said disinformation was being spread through social media platforms that an export shipment had been sent to Israel.
• The Customs also dispelled the rumour, stating that no record was found of any direct trade with Israel, the ministry said. If any goods or commodities of Pakistan origin were exported through a third country, they could not be termed Pakistan`s exports to any country.
• The trade was done through the UAE as the country had reduced tariffs on 96 per cent of goods traded with Israel


2. Militant attacks drop by 36pc in country as death toll stays same

• Pakistan witnessed a rather peaceful March with the number of militant attacks declining as compared to February.
• However, the number of deaths remained almost the same, according to an Islamabad-based think tank In its report, Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) stated that in March there was a 36 per cent decline in militant attacks as compared to February.
• The number of attacks stood at 37 in which 57 people lost their lives and 72 others were injured. In February, 59 people were killed in58 attacks while 134 were wounded.
• The report also recorded a decline in suicide bombing in March, as only one such attack was reported, compared to three in February


3. No entity can spend unapproved funds: ministry

• Amid Supreme Court`s questions over fiscal constraints in holding elections for two provincial assemblies, the Ministry of Finance has notified that `no authority` could make or incur or commit any expenditure or create a liability against the Federal Consolidated Fund or Public Account of the federation unless it was properly authorised in the budget through a fiscal and parliamentary process.
• A three-member bench of the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial has called federal secretaries of the finance division and the Election Commission to appear on Monday to personally respond to questions as to how much funds were available in the federal consolidated account.
• They would also need to explain why about Rs20 billion could not be spared for elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on April 30, as announced by President Alvi

4. World Bank proposes changes to Sindh water, agriculture project

• The World Bank has proposed some changes in the implementation plan for the Sindh Water and Agriculture Transformation project to adapt mitigation activities to help the provincial government manage climate risks with a focus on the water and agricultural nexus.
• In a just-released climate change technical note on the project, the World Bank says the project approved in December last year intends to improve agricultural water productivity to obtain more value from water supplies affected by climate change.
• The World Bank is discussing with the government specific adaptation and mitigation activities proposed for the project, which intends to improve agricultural water productivity to obtain more value from water supplies affected by climate change, induced disasters

5. Pakistan calls for global approach to achieve zero-waste

• Pakistan called for a global approach to achieve the goal of a `zero-waste` world as the UN chief warned that the planet was `literally drowning in garbage`.
• The global and Pakistani perspectives were discussed at a meeting at the UN headquarters in New York this week where Pakistan highlighted one of its major problems: heaps of waste on the surface polluting groundwater resources. The sternest warning, however, came from UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
• `The planet is literally drowning in garbage, and it is high time to clean up,` said the UN chief while emphasising the need to appreciate the gravity of the situation
