1. SC registrar removed after Justice Isa`s blistering rejoinder

• The government went into `defiance mode` on April 3, 2023 and recalled the services of the Supreme Court registrar, following a demand put forward by the second senior-most judge of the apex court.
• In a tersely worded letter, written in response to a March 31 circular that asked to disregard the decision of a Justice Qazi Faez Isa-led bench, the senior puisne judge urged the Cabinet Division to recall Ishrat Ali to `prevent him from further damaging the reputation and integrity of the Supreme Court`.
• The judge also sought disciplinary proceedings against Mr Ali for apparently violating the Constitution and the order of the Supreme Court of March 29


2. Pakistan sees lowest output of cotton in four decades

• The country has produced 34 per cent less cotton this year as compared with the crop yield last season, reveals data with Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA).
• The final figures for the crop year 2022-23 show that Pakistan produced 4,912,069 bales, the lowest in around four decades, of cotton against 7,441,833 in the 2021-22season, a year-on-year decline of 2,528,764 bales or 34pc loss.
• It means the textile industry will have to import around 10 million bales to satiate its annual hunger for 15m bales.
• However, mill consumption in the year 2022-23 has also been reported at 8.8m bales, the lowest in over 20 years, mainly because of severe import financing issues

3. Dar to attend IMF, WB meetings next week in Washington

• Finance Minister Ishaq Dar will represent Pakistan at the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund`s spring meetings in Washington next week, as it will be another opportunity for Islamabad to campaign for the renewal of its IMF package.
• `Due to financial constraints, the finance minister will come with a small entourage,` a diplomatic source told Dawn. `But the finance secretary and the governor of the State Bank of Pakistan are likely to accompany him.
• The World Bank and the IMF announced that this year they will hold `in-person` meetings at their headquarters in Washington from April 10 to 16.


4. Pakistan`s exports fall 15pc for seventh month in a row

• Pakistan`s exports of merchandise shrank for the seventh month in a row dipping by 14.76 per cent year on-year to $2.36 billion in March, reflecting fear of massive layoffs in the export sector of the country.
• In the first nine months (July to March) of 2022-23, exports were down 9.87pc at $21.04bn compared to $23.35bn in the corresponding period last year, according to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics on Monday.
• The export proceeds are declining mainly because of internal and external factors raising fears about the closure of industrial units, especially textile, and clothing


5. 125 policemen martyred in militant attacks in three months

• One hundred and twenty-five police personnel embraced martyrdom and 212 others sustained injuries in different militant attacks across the province during the first quarter of 2023. A total of 25 cases of militant attacks have been registered with the police during the three months, police data shows.
• According to the data, 15 militant attacks were reported against police in January 2023, in which 116 personnel embraced martyrdom and 189 were injured.
• Three militant attacks were reported in February 2023, in which two police personnel embraced martyrdom and five others were wounded
