1. Polls not possible this year after ECP decision

  • The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) expects to complete the process of fresh delimitation of national and provincial assembly constituencies by December 14 over a month beyond the constitutionally-mandated deadline for conducting general elections in the country.
  • Thursday`s announcement of the schedule for carrying out the delimitation exercise, necessitated by the recent approval of the census results by the Council of Common Interests, effectively means that elections cannot be held in 2023

2. Kakar inducts two dozen into cabinet

  • Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar has installed a 24-member cabinet comprising politicians, TV artists and anchors, retired bureaucrats and servicemen, and one that is apparently dominated by the nominees of PML-N and PPP.
  • President Arif Alvi administered the oath to the newly appointed interim ministers on Thursday. Of the 24 cabinet members, 16 were federal ministers, three advisers to the prime minister, and five special assistants to the prime minister (SAPMs). Most of them were new faces in a government set-up.
  • The swearing-in, held at Aiwan-iSadr, was attended by Prime Minister Kakar, Punjab`s caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, politicians and prominent figures from different sectors

3. Syrus Qazi takes over as new foreign secretary

  • Muhammad Syrus Sajjad Qazi on Thursday assumed responsibilities as the country`s 32nd foreign secretary. He replaces Asad Majeed Khan, who retired from government service upon attaining superannuation.
  • `Today marks a significant transition in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Ambassador Muhammad Syrus Sajjad Qazi assumes the role of 32nd Foreign Secretary of Pakistan succeeding Ambassador Dr Asad Majeed Khan,` Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said at a weekly briefing

4. Capital police set up Minority Protection Unit

  • A Minority Protection Unit with the deployment of 70 personnel has been established in the capital police.
  • Zonal police superintendents have been made responsible for the protection of the lives and property of minorities and their worship places, the police said.
  • The unit was established in response to the recommendation of the National Minorities Commission. The unit will work under the supervision of the senior superintendent of police (SSP) operations

5. Alvi returns summary regarding appointment of AIOU vice chancellor

  • President Dr Arif Alvi has returned summary regarding appointment of Vice Chancellor (VC) of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) raising some questions about the appointment.
  • Sources said that recently, the ministry of education through Prime Minister`s Office had sent three names for the post of AIOU VC and PM office recommended the top name to President for appointing him as VC of distance learning university.
  • However, sources said president returned the summary andsought clarification from the ministry regarding some points, asking why the process was initiated afresh, where is the score-sheet on the basis of which previous process was halted
