1. `Empowered` CEC turns down president`s meeting offer

As expected, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja on Thursday declined President Arif Alvi`s invitation for consultations to fix a date for polls, saying that under an amended law, such a meeting would be of `scant consequence`.
In his response to the presidential letter a copy of which is available with Dawn the CEC claimed the president had no role to play in the process of deciding when to hold elections.
President Alvi, on the other hand, has sought the opinion of the Ministry of Law and Justice on the position taken by the ECP


2. AJK govt reshuffles bureaucracy

The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government on Thursday elevated a senior police officer as secretary to the government apart from making some other mutual transfers mainly in the police department.
According to a notification, Dr Khalid Mahmood Chauhan, deputy inspector general (DIG) police in Mirpur region, was transferred and posted as secretary tourism and archaeology in place of Ms Midhat Shahzad who was transferred and posted as secretary sports, youth and culture

3. PM Kakar reshapes cabinet committees with focus on China

Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar on Thursday reconstituted three key committees of the federal cabinet including a downgrade of all important Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCoE) with greater focus on Chinese investments.
According to separate notifications issued by the Cabinet Secretariat, the CCoE would now be headed by Minister for Power & Petroleum Muhammad Ali Ghulam Ali instead of the prime minister as used to be in the PDM government


4. Punjab forms JITs to arrest Jaranwala attackers

The interim Punjab government has formed 10 joint investigation teams (JITs) to arrest the attackers who vandalised churches and homes of Christians in Jaranwala last week.
The attacks in Jaranwala took place on Aug 16, when a mob of hundreds rampaged through Christian-majority areas, vandalising and torching several churches, besides ransacking and damaging dozens of homes


5. US supports fair elections, ambassador tells CEC

US Ambassador Donald Blome on Thursday met Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja to reaffirm the United States` support for free and fair elections `conducted in accordance with Pakistan`s laws and Constitution`.
According to a press release issued by the US Embassy, the US ambassador reaffirmed that Pakistan`s leaders are the people`s choice, underscoring commitment to enhancing US-Pakistan ties regardless of the chosen leadership.
Though not explicitly stated, concerns over poll delay were implied as global figures urged elections within 90 days per the Constitution

6. Taliban block several women from going to UAE for studies

Dozens of Afghan women granted scholarships to study in the United Arab Emirates have been blocked from leaving Afghanistan, one of the women said on Thursday, following outcry from their Emirati sponsor.
Laila, 22, was one of around 30 women who had been sponsored to study in the UAE by prominent Emirati businessman Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor, but were stopped from departing on their flights from Kabul airport on Wednesday morning.
Women and girls were banned from attending high school and university in Afghanistan after Taliban authorities took control of the country in August 2021


7. Gen Burhan `leaves` HQ for first time

Sudan`s army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, appeared in a video circulated by the army on Thursday outside of the army command compound in Khartoum for the first time since the beginning of a war more than four months ago.
The army has been fighting the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for control of the capital and several major cities since April 15. Attempts to mediate have proven fruitless as diplomats say both sides still believe they can win
8. Modi apprises Xi about `concerns` on border faceoff
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to China`s President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Johannesburg and highlighted concerns India has about border issues along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), India`s foreign secretary said.
Modi and Xi agreed `to direct their relevant officials to intensify efforts at expeditious disengage-ment and de-escalation,` Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said


9. S. Arabia, Iran, UAE among six new entrants to BRICS

The BRICS bloc of developing nations agreed on Thursday to admit Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, Argentina and the United Arab Emirates in a move aimed at accelerating its push to reshuffle a world order it sees as outdated.
The group`s leaders left the door open to future enlargement, potentially paving the way for the admission of dozens more countries motivated by a desire to level a global playing field they consider rigged against them


10. Naseem`s late show takes Pakistan to thrill-packed series win over Afghanistan

Number 10 batsman Naseem Shah hit a boundary off the penultimate delivery to give Pakistan a dramatic one-wicket win over a luckless Afghanistan in the second ODI at Hambantota on Thursday.
The 20-year-old miscued a boundary off fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi and ran jubilantly towards the dressing room as Pakistan scored 11 off the final over to finish with 302-9 in 49.5 overs.
The victory gave Pakistan an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series with the last game in Colombo on Saturday
