1. WB approves $350m for economic reforms

The World Bank on Wednesday announced that its board of directors had approved the long-awaited $350 million loan`2nd Resilient Institutions for Sustainable Economy (RISE-II) Operation` to Pakistan to support key macroeconomic reforms in energy, taxation and business environment.
The financing `aims to strengthen fiscal management and promote competitiveness for sustained and inclusive economic growth`, the Washington-based multilateral lender said in its announcement. The Beijing-based Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is co-financing the programme with another $250m


2. Power tariffs for all raised by Rs1.15

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) on Wednesday approved an additional across the-board charge of Rs1.15 per unit for electricity consumers throughout the country, including K-Electric, and also concluded the process of imposing another Rs1.72 per unit on K-E consumers for the next three months January to March 2024.
Effectively, K-Electric consumers would have to pay a cumulative additional cost of Rs2.87 per unit in the upcoming three months of January to March once Nepra notifies it in a couple of days to clear the backlog on account of quarterly tariff adjustments and implement a uniform regulatory regime across the country without any discrimination or favour, notwithstanding different loss and efficiency levels of different power supply companies

3. Outlawed BNA `commander` announces surrender

Sarfraz Ahmed Bungulzai, a `commander` of the banned militant group Baloch National Army (BNA), announced his surrender on Wednesday alongside 70 of his associates.
Sarfraz Bungulzai, flanked by provincial information minister Jan Achakzai, told a presser in Quetta that he initially thought his armed struggle was for Baloch rights, but then realised the Baloch blood was being spilled for `individual interests`

4. WFP delivers Jordan aid through Israeli crossing

The UN`s World Food Programme (WFP) said Wednesday it had delivered food into war-torn Gaza through the Israeli Kerem Shalom border crossing in the first direct aid convoy from Jordan.
The arrival of the 46-truck convoy, carrying more than 750 tonnes of goods, came after `weeks of coordination with all parties`, the Rome-based organisation said


5. UN vote put off again as Gaza toll crosses 20,000

The death toll from Israel`s barbaric bombing campaign in Gaza has crossed 20,000, local authorities said on Wednesday after at least 12 people were killed and dozens wounded in a series of air strikes in Rafah, which also targeted a mosque.
According to Gaza authorities, some 8,000 children and 6,200 women were among those killed since October 7.
