1. Apex body links peace with political, economic stability

• The country`s top civil and military leadership have forged a consensus that terrorism, economic revival and political stability are interconnected and without political stability and economic progress, there can be no peace.
• A meeting of the Central Apex Committee was held on Friday, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
• The committee which comprises top civil and military leadership met against the backdrop of the Feb 17 attack on police headquarters in Karachi and the Jan 30 attack on Peshawar`s Police Lines mosque.
• The moot was attended by Chief of Army Staff Gen Asim Munir, federal ministers, chief ministers of all four provinces and Gilgit Baltistan, the AJK prime minister and other senior officials


2. Pakistan abstains from voting on Ukraine resolution

• Pakistan is among the 32 countries that abstained from voting in the UN General Assembly on February 23, 2023 on a resolution that rejected the forcible acquisition of land, and called for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
• More than 60 countries, including the United States and major European powers, moved the resolution in the General Assembly`s 11th emergency session on Thursday, a day before the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
• The resolution, which stressed that the Russian invasion violated the principles of the UN Charter, received 141 votes in favour, seven against, and was adopted by the assembly

3. LHC restores district status of Murree

• The Lahore High Court (LHC) Rawalpindi bench on February 24, 2023 restored district status of Murree by suspending the notification issued by the caretaker government of Punjab.
• The LHC single member bench comprising Justice Sultan Tanvir Ahmad issued the interim suspension order while hearing the petition of residents of Murree who were aggrieved of the notification of Feb 15 passed by the Board of Revenue, Punjab.
• The petitioners included Raja Shaukat Ali Abbasi, Abdul Jabbar Satti, Shakeel Abbasi and Akhlag Abbasi. Barrister Hamza Anwar Abbasi and Saima Anwar Abbasi represented the petitioners.
• The counsel argued that Murree has been designated as a district by the former Chief Minister Punjab Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi


4. $1bn deal signed with Uzbekistan to boost trade

• Pakistan and Uzbekistan have signed an agreement to increase bilateral trade by almost $1 billion, the finance ministry said on February 24, 2023.
• The trade agreement was inked at the conclusion of the 8th Session of Pakistan-Uzbekistan Inter-Governmental Commission (IGC) on Trade Economic and Scientific-Technical Cooperation held in Tashkent.
• Finance Minister Ishaq Dar headed Pakistan`s delegation.
• An official announcement of the finance ministry said that the most important outcome of the IGC was the signing of the $1bn trade agreement, which will encourage the exchange of goods and services and will also ease the transit process


5. Local elections postponed in Sri Lanka

• Sri Lanka`s election commission indefinitely postponed local polls on February 24, 2023 after the president installed by parliament last year after his predecessor fled refused to fund the vote.
• The March 9 polls would only have picked local councilors, but would be the first electoral test for Ranil Wickremesinghe since he took office in July after months of protests over the island`s worst-ever economic crisis.
• They were seen by many as a de facto referendum on unpopular austerity measures he has imposed as he seeks to secure an International Monetary Fund bailout
