6. North Korea claims it has nuclear attack capability after US, South hold N-drill

• North Korea said on February 24, 2023 it had fired cruise missiles and claimed that ramped-up US-South Korea military drills `can be regarded as a declaration of war`.
• It came after the two allies conducted a table top exercise at the Pentagon focused on responses to a nuclear attack by Pyongyang.
• North Korean forces held a `strategic cruise missile launching drill` in the early hours of Thursday, firing four Hwasal-2s, the official Korean Central News Agency reported on February 24, 2023.
• The exercise demonstrated North Korea`s `deadly nuclear counterattack capability against the hostile forces`, it said


7. First Western tanks arrive in Ukraine

• Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed on February 24, 2023 to do everything to defeat Russia this year, as the first Western tanks arrived in Kyiv on the first anniversary of Europe`s largest conflict since World War Two.
• German-made Leopard tanks from Warsaw arrived in Ukraine as Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki visited Kyiv to send a `clear and measurable signal of further support`.
• More Polish tanks will be sent soon, Morawiecki said, also offering to train Ukrainian pilots to fly F16 jets, as Western allies underlined their unwavering support


8. India opposes mention of `war` in G20 statement

• Germany and France insisted on February 24, 2023 that any joint statement from the ongoing G20 finance ministers meeting must refer to the Ukraine `war`, following reports that host India wanted to avoid the word.
• Organising a raft of Group of 20 meetings during its presidency this year puts India in an awkward position, as it has refused to condemn the invasion of Ukraine by its biggest arms supplier Russia.
• Indian media reports said New Delhi wanted to keep the word `war` out of any final statement from the meeting of finance ministers and central bank heads that wraps up in Bengaluru on Saturday


9. US slaps more sanctions on Russia over war

• The United States marked the first anniversary of Russia`s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2023 by pledging another $2 billion in weaponry for Kyiv that prepares for a spring offensive and announcing new sanctions against Russia and its allies, new export controls and tariffs aimed at undermining Moscow`s ability to wage war.
• Also, global anti-money laundering watchdog the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) on Friday said it has suspended Russia`s membership over Moscow`s invasion of Ukraine.
• The US aid does not include F-16 fighter jets that Ukraine has requested
