6. Cabinet to take key economic decisions

• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called a meeting of the federal cabinet in which some significant economic decisions are expected to be taken.
• Although the agenda of the meeting was not issued till the filing of this report, sources in the PM Office said some significant economic decisions would be taken to revive IMF programme, while Monday`s countrywide power outage will also be discussed.
• The cabinet will also consider the PTI`s threat to take to the streets against the appointment of Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi as caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab.

7. Poland signals intent to send German tanks to Ukraine

• Poland`s prime minister said on Monday his government would ask Germany for permission to send Leopard tanks to Ukraine and planned to send them whether or not Berlin agreed.
• The Kyiv government wants the German-made Leopard 2 tank to break through Russian lines and recapture territory this year.
• Pressure on Berlin which must approve re-exports of the Leopard also came from EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels. Latvia`s foreign minister said `there are no good arguments` why the battle tanks could not be provided


8. UN dedicates World Education Day to Afghan girls and women

• The United Nations has urged the global community to remind Afghanistan`s de facto rulers on the International Day of Education that they need to `let the Afghan girls learn`.
• The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) will observe the day on Jan 24 (Tuesday).
• `Unesco would like to dedicate the fifth edition of this International Day to all the girls and women in Afghanistan, who have been denied their right to learn, study and teach,` said the organisation`s Director General Audrey Azoulay.
• `The Organization condemns this serious attack on human dignity and on the fundamental right to education


9. Probe into Beirut blast resumes after 13 months

• The Lebanese judge investigating the deadly 2020 Beirut port blast has resumed his work, a judicial official said on January 23, 2023, after a 13-month suspension due to political pressure.
• The probe into the cause of the Aug 4, 2020 blast, one of history`s largest non-nuclear explosions, had been stalled since December 2021 as a series of complaints against the judge obstructed his work.
• No state official has yet been held accountable over the explosion, which killed more than 215 people and destroyed swathes of the capital.
• Authorities said hundreds of tonnes of ammonium nitrate fertiliser haphazardly stocked in a port warehouse since 2014 had caught fire, causing the explosion


10. EU, UK and US impose new sanctions on Tehran over protests

• Relations between Iran and Europe have deteriorated sharply, with the EU and Britain ramping up sanctions against the Islamic republic over its response to more than four months of protests.
• Separately, the United States on January 23, 2023 imposed sanctions on Iran`s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Cooperative Foundation and senior Iranian officials, stepping up pressure on Tehran over its crackdown on protests.
• Iran`s ties with the West have long been tense,0ver issues ranging from its contentious nuclear programme to its role in regional conflicts and the detentions of foreigners and dual nationals
