6. KP to continue with Covid vaccination

• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa health department has said vaccination of the residents against the novel coronavirus will continue though the World Health Organisation has declared that Covid-19 is no longer a public health emergency.
• Until now, 70 per cent of the province`s population has got themselves inoculated against the virus.
• `The world health agency has pronounced that coronavirus is no longer a serious health problem, but vaccination will continue, director of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation Dr Arif Khan.

7. Sri Lanka approves domestic debt plan

• Sri Lanka`s parliament approved a domestic debt restructuring plan that is crucial to continue a $2.9 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
• The plan passed with a majority of 122 votes in the 225-member parliament.
• Sri Lanka tumbled into its worst financial crisis in more than seven decades last year after the country`s dollar reserves shrank to record lows, triggering mass protests, a foreign debt default and the resignation of its former president


8. Xanana Gusmao inaugurated as East Timor`s prime minister

• East Timor independence fighter Xanana Gusmao was inaugurated as prime minister of Southeast Asia`s youngest democracy on Saturday, marking his return to power almost a decade after he left the government.
• More than two decades after independence, the country is still struggling to develop its economy, with more than 40 per cent of its 1.3 million citizens living in poverty.
• `My vision for the people is for them to be more prosperous, educated, qualified and innovative, to create more job opportunities and to prioritise productive sectors so we can build a better economy, Gusmao said during his inauguration speech

• Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez pledged the EU`s `unequivocal` support for Ukraine in Kyiv as Spain assumed presidency of the bloc, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hit out at foot-dragging over pilot training by `some` Western nations.
• Sixteen months into Russia`s invasion, Ukraine says it is fighting `fierce` battles as part of its counteroffensive launched last month after weeks of anticipation. But both Zelensky and his commander-in-chief Valery Zaluzhny registered their frustration over the slow deliveries of weapons and lack of clarity over pilot training


10. Celebrated actor Shakeel passes away at 78

• As the nation was celebrating Eidul Azha, the news of the death of distinguished actor Shakeel in Karachi saddened his countless admirers all over the world. He was 78.
• He leaves behind his wife, a son and a daughter.
• Shakeel was Yousuf Kamal`s showbiz name.
• Born on May 29, 1945, in Bhopal, undivided India, his family came to Pakistan a few years after the partition of the subcontinent. He had a penchant for acting from his salad days, and his clean Urdu diction and good looks landed him in the film industry in the latter half of the 1960s.
