6. WB urges S. Asian states to expand collaboration in higher education
• A World Bank report has called upon South Asian governments to step up regional collaboration in higher education, noting that growing internationalisation has been one of the most striking trends characterising the global landscape over the past two decades.
• Several models of cross-border collaboration have emerged, which could be of great benefit to the South Asia region: multi-campus universities, branch campuses, academic mobility, joint delivery of instruction, joint research projects, professional networks for academics and higher education institutions, quality assurance and accreditation associations, recognition of qualification networks, and strategic partnerships and alliances, according to the report titled, Regional Integration for Higher Education Development Options for South Asia
7. Ukraine says Russian troops advancing amid `fierce fighting`
• Ukraine said on July 2, 2023 that Russian troops were advancing in four areas in the east of the country amid `fierce fighting`, but reported its forces moving forward in the south.
• Deputy Defence Minister Ganna Maliar said that Russian troops were advancing near Avdiivka, Mariinka, Lyman and Svatove.
• `Fierce fighting is going on everywhere,` Maliar wrote on social media, adding: `The situation is quite complicated
8. Israel to buy 25 F-35 stealth jets in $3bn deal
• Israel has approved buying a third squadron of advanced F-35 fighter jets manufactured by Lockheed Martin in a $3-billion deal, the defence ministry said on July 2, 2023.
• Israel is the only Middle East nation with F-35s, the world`s most advanced fighter which is stealth capable and can be used to gather intelligence, strike deep into enemy territory and engage in air duels.
• The deal to purchase 25 F-35 jets expected to be signed in coming months will expand the country`s fieet of the aircraft to 75, a ministry statement said
9. Dongyu re-elected as head of UN food agency
• The head of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation, Qu Dongyu, was re-elected on July 2, 2023 for a second term as head of the UN agency.
• He was the only candidate standing for the role of FAO Director-General, and received 168 out of 182 votes in a ballot in Rome on Sunday.
• Qu, a former Chinese government minister who was nominated for the post by Beijing, will serve a new four-year term from August 1
10. In a first, Pakistani women summit Nanga Parbat
• At least 52 mountaineers, including 11 Pakistani nationals, scaled Nanga Parbat (8,126 metres tall) on Sunday.
• Among these climbers were Naila Kiani and Samina Baig, who became the first Pakistani women to scale the world`s ninth-highest peak. However, both were part of different expedition teams.
• `Today on July 2, 2023, at 10:18am, Naila Kiani scaled the majestic Nanga Parbat, standing tall at an inspirational height of 8,125 metres. She became the first Pakistani woman to climb Nanga Parbat,` said Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP) Secretary Karrar Haidri
