6. South Africa says nations lining up to join BRICS bloc
• Twenty-two countries from around the globe have applied to join the BRICS bloc and more have shown interest, South Africa said on July 20, ahead of the five-nation group`s summit next month.
• BRICS, a loosely defined group which sees itself as a counterweight to Western economic domination, derives its name from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
• The bloc has previously indicated it is open to expansion
7. Algeria slams Israeli move over Western Sahara
• Algeria on Thursday denounced Israel`s backing of Morocco`s `claimed sovereignty` over the disputed Western Sahara region as a `flagrant violation` of international law.
• The Western Sahara conflict pits Morocco against Sahrawi separatists of the Algiers-backed Polisario Front.
• The dispute dates back to 1975, when colonial ruler Spain withdrew from the territory, sparking a 15-year war between Morocco and the Polisario which seeks the territory`s independence
8. Iraq expels Swedish envoy after fresh incident of desecration in Stockholm
• Tensions flared between Iraq and Sweden on Thursday over a Stockholm protest in which a man stomped on the Holy Quran, weeks after he had burnt pages of Islam`s holy book, sparking widespread Muslim anger.
• News that Swedish authorities would permit the protest to proceed on frees peech grounds had led hundreds of Iraqis to storm and torch Sweden`s Baghdad embassy in a chaotic pre-dawn attack
9. Nawab of Junagadh, who championed accession, passes away
• Nawab Mohammad Jahangir Khanji, Nawab of the Junagadh state, passed away on July 20 at a private hospital here, where he was undergoing treatment. He was 67.
• Suffering from liver disease for a while now, the late Nawab of Junagadh was only recently diagnosed with cancer. He had dedicated his entire life to the independence of the Junagadh State and continued his struggle till his last breath. `Junagadh is Pakistan,` he would say
10. Naila sets new record with Broad Peak summit
• Climber Naila Kiani set another record on July 20, becoming the first Pakistani woman to summit Broad Peak, the world`s 12th highest mountain at 8,051 metres above sea level.
• Separately, Polish climber Anna Tybor became the first woman to ski down the mountain. In other summits, Bolivian climber Hugo Ayaviri ascended Gasherbrum-II while two climbers from Pakistan scaled Gasherbrum-I.
• Alpine Club of Pakistan Secretary Karar Haidri said Ms Kiani ascended the peak at 2:03am after starting her summit push on Wednesday from camp 3
