7. India reserves top $600bn

• India`s foreign exchange reserves rose for a third straight week to total $609.02 billion as of July 14, the highest in nearly 15 months, data from the central bank showed on July 21, 2023.
• They rose by $12.74bn from the week earlier the biggest gain in four months having risen by a total of $3.08bn in the prior two weeks. `A major portion of the week-on-week jump in forex reserves is driven by revaluation gains due to dollar weakness and reduction in US Treasury yields,` said Gaura Sen Gupta, India economist at IDFC FIRST Bank

• India and Sri Lanka agreed on July 21, 2023 to consider building a land link between them, they said during President Ranil Wickremesinghe`s first visit to the regional powerhouse, as Chinese influence grows on his island.
• Establishing `land connectivity` across the Palk Strait, which in places is only around 25 kilometres wide, would give India access to the key ports of Trincomalee and Colombo and strengthen a `millennia-old relationship`, the neighbours said in a strategic document.

• President Joe Biden nominated Admiral Lisa Franchetti on July 21, 2023 to lead the US Navy, a historic step that would break a gender barrier in the military by making her the first woman to command the service and to become a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
