1. IMF blames Dar, Tarin for derailing programme

• Describing the failed four-year Extended Fund Facility (EFF) as a `missed opportunity`, the IMF blamed both the PTI and PDM, particularly under the economic stewardship of Shaukat Tarin and Ishaq Dar, for irresponsible budgetary expansion and exchange rate interventions, respectively.
• The IMF staff report released after the signing of the $3 billion Standby Arrangement detailed stepwise `stop and go` cycles of the $6.5bn EFF that repeatedly went off the track over almost four years


2. KP interim minister resigns after ECP seeks his removal

• A day after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) asked for the removal of caretaker provincial minister Shahid Khattak amid reports of his addressing a public meeting of the Awami National Party (ANP), Mr Khattak resigned from his portfolio citing `personal commitments`.
• `It is stated that I am unable to continue as caretaker provincial minister due to some personal commitments. Therefore, I would like to tender resignation from my portfolio with immediate effect henceforth,` Mr Khattak`s resignation read

3. `N` proposes Dar as interim PM, but PPP disagrees

• As PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif intends to see party stalwart and confidant Ishaq Dar as the interim prime minister, the PPP has expressed strong reservations saying a `man from the Sharif family` is not suitable to lead the `neutral` setup.
• However, PML-N started efforts on Sunday to take all stakeholders on board, including the military establishment and assuage the concerns of the PPP leadership. Both PPP and PML-N want to see a politician steer the caretaker government to avert any move to delay polls. The ruling party is likely to make an official announcement after convincing the allies


4. World Bank extends solar project`s closing date

• The World Bank has extended the closing date of the Sindh Solar Energy Project (SSEP) from September 2023 to July 2025 since the implementation of the project approved in 2022 remained unsatisfactory.
• The project has been significantly delayed for several reasons, including a two-year delay in appointing a full-time Project Management Unit (PMU), the impact of Covid-19, the 2022 floods and the weak capacity of the PMU.


5. Ruling Socialists, conservatives tied in Spain`s elections

• No one party or bloc would win an outright majority in Spain`s snap general election, according to preliminary results with 50 per cent of votes counted on Sunday, and the ruling Socialist Party (PSOE) slightly ahead for parliamentary seats at 131.
• The conservative Peoples Party was just behind at 130 seats.
• The early count does not necessarily refiect the final outcome as it comes primarily from small towns. Voter surveys earlier showed the PP ahead, although short of a working majority in the 350-seat lower house, which it could achieve via a potential tie-up with far-right Vox

6. Italy hosts migration conference to extend Tunisia deal

• Italy hosted numerous national leaders in Rome on July 23, 2023, at a conference aimed at extending an EU-backed deal with Tunisia to curb the arrival of migrants to European shores.
• As presidents, premiers and ministers prepared to huddle for the talks, Pope Francis appealed to them to help the scores of people who try to enter Europe each year in search of a better life as they flee poverty and conflict.

7. Russia strikes Odesa as Putin says Kyiv counterattack failed

• The Ukrainian port city of Odesa came under renewed Russian missile attack early on July 23, 2023, just hours before President Vladimir Putin declared that Kyiv`s counteroffensive had `failed` as he began two-day talks with his Belarus counterpart and ally Alexander Lukashenko.
• The longtime leaders met for the first time since Lukashenko helped end a mutiny by Russian Wagner mercenaries in Russia last month, in the biggest threat to Putin`s more than two-decade rule.
• `There is no counteroffensive, Lukashenko said, before being interrupted by Putin: `There is one, but it has failed


8. Iraq offers mediation to end war in Yemen

• Iraq has offered to mediate between warring parties in Yemen to end the country`s years-long war, Iraq`s top diplomat said at a press conference on July 23, 2023.
• Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein put forward the proposal during a visit from his Yemeni counterpart Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak.
• Iran-backed Houthi rebels seized the capital Sanaa in 2014 before a Saudi-led military coalition intervened the following year on the side of the country`s internationally recognised government

9. Tayyab stars as Shaheens outclass India A to retain Emerging Asia Cup title

• Tayyab Tahir`s sparkling century helped Pakistan Shaheens beat India A by 128 runs in the final of the ACC Men`s Emerging Teams Asia Cup at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on July 23, 2023.
• This was Shaheens` second successive Emerging Teams Asia Cup title, after the side defeated Bangladesh in the 2019 edition final.

• Pakistan`s Hamza Khan trumped his Egyptian rival to win the 2023 WSF World Junior Squash Championship, on July 23, 2023
• He became the first Pakistani to win the championship since Jansher Khan`s victory 37 years ago in 1986.
• In the men`s final at Melbourne Sports Centres, Khan triumphed over 15-year-old Mohamed Zakaria, who would have become the youngest-ever winner of the men`s event
