6. Memorial to honour South Asian soldiers who fought for UK in world wars

• A New British Indian Army Memorial, commemorating the sacrifices of millions of Pakistani and Indian soldiers who fought alongside British forces during the world wars, is being commissioned in Glasgow, Scottish outlet Stv News reported.
• The project, which will be located on the grounds of Glasgow`s Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, will include a chattri (dome) design for the roof and natural stone columns to match the museum`s famous architecture.
• This will be Scotland`s first permanent memorial to the sacrifices of South Asian soldiers who fought in both world wars.
• The approval for the memorial comes after a six-year campaign by the charity organisation, Colourful Heritage.


7. Israeli strike damages Syrian airport, disrupts flights

• Israeli warplanes struck Aleppo airport before dawn on March 7, 2023, causing significant damage that halted flights to and from Syria`s quake-hit second city.
• Syria`s transport ministry said it would re-route flights carrying qualce aid following the attacl< that put Aleppo International Airport out of commission. It said flights would now land in Damascus or Latakia airports.
• The airport has been a major conduit for aid flights since the Feb 6 quake devastated swathes of Turkiye and Syria, but they were brought to a stop, a transport official said


8. Britain unveils contentious plan to stop cross-Channel migrants

• The UK government on March 7, 2023 unveiled controversial plans to stop migrants crossing the Channel illegally on small boats, acknowledging it is stretching international law amid an outcry from rights campaigners.
• Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the plan would `take back control of our borders once and for all` reprising a popular pledge from campaigners like him who backed Britain`s Brexit divorce from the European Union (EU).
• `This new law will send a clear signal that if you come to this country illegally, you will be swiftly removed, `he wrote in The Sun newspaper. Under the draft law, interior minister Suella Braverman will be given a new legal duty to deport all migrants entering illegally, such as across the Channel, trumping their other rights in UK and European human rights law


9. US to keep troops in Iraq: Austin

• US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin, making an unannounced trip to Iraq on March 7, 2023 nearly 20 years after the US-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein, said Washington was committed to keeping its military presence in the country.
• The 2003 invasion led to the deaths of tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians and created instability that eventually paved the way for the rise of Islamic State militants after the US withdrew its forces in 2011.
• `US forces are ready to remain in Iraq at the invitation of the government of Iraq,` Mr Austin told reporters after meeting Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani


10. Japan`s new H3 rocket fails again, forced to self-destruct

• Japan`s second attempt to launch its next-generation H3 rocket failed after liftoff on March 7, 2023, with the spacecraft forced to self-destruct after the command centre concluded the mission could not succeed.
• The failure is a blow for Japan`s space agency JAXA, which has billed the rocket as a flexible and cost-effective new flagship. Its launch had already been delayed by several years, and then a first attempt last month failed when the solid rocket boosters did not ignite.
• Tuesday`s launch from the Tanegashima Space Center in southwestern Japan initially appeared to be a success, with the rocket lifting off. The first-stage separation appeared to go as planned, but signs of trouble soon emerged
