1. Task force proposed to `check` anti-army campaign

• The government is mulling forming a special task force to check social media campaigns against the army, an official source told.
• He explained that a summary to set up the task force has been moved but was still awaiting approval. `For now it is just a proposal.
• The proposed task force will comprise officers from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). The proposed task force will be assisted by the police and other law enforcement agencies and frame recommendations to check the misuse of social media.
• The move came at a time when the government has accused the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf and its chairman, Imran Khan, of running a vilification campaign against the military


2. IMF wants to be kept out of `election politics`

• The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on March 23, 2023 sent a strong signal to Pakistan to keep the Fund away from its domestic politics and reminded the government that the decision to hold or not hold elections `rests solely with Pakistan`s institutions`.
• Earlier this week, the IMF also dismissed claims that the global lender wanted Pakistan to review its nuclear program to qualify for the renewal of a loan package. Talks between Pakistan and the IMF over an extended fund facility (EFF) have been stalled for months, although more than once they came close to finalising it.
• The IMF statement came a day after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) decided to put off Punjab Assembly elections by more than five months, citing financial and security constraints

3. President confers civil awards for meritorious services

• President Dr Arif Alvi has conferred civil awards on 135 national and foreign citizens on Pakistan Day in recognition of their excellence and gallantry in their respective fields. The awards were conferred at an investiture ceremony held at the Aiwan-i-Sadr on March 25, 2023.
• The awards were conferred on politicians including Sartaj Aziz, late Mir Hasil Bizenjo and late Justice Rana Bhagwandas. Ahmed Ali Chagla, Muhammad Qavi Khan, Jahangir Khan and Jansher Khan were awarded for their services in the fields of arts and sports.
• Raees Ahmed and late Amjad Islam Amjad (arts): late Arif Nizami, Mujibur Rehman Shami, Javed Chaudhry, Nadeem Malik, Amir Ilyas Rana, late Ziauddin and Altaf Hassan Qureshi (journalism); Bilquees Bano Edhi (social services); Muhammad Ramazan Chhipa and Dr James M. Shera were also awarded


4. Pakistan Day parade rescheduled for tomorrow

• The Pakistan Day military parade, which was to be held on Thursday, was postponed due to weather conditions and will now be held on March 25, 2023 (tomorrow).
• The military parade is observed each year on March 23. The event is at the centre of celebrations to commemorate the 1940 Lahore Resolution when the All-India Muslim League demanded a separate nation for the Muslims of the British ruled India.
• The parade will be held at the Presidents House, the presidency said.
• Earlier, the Pakistan Army decided to hold the annual parade of the armed forces on a limited scale, joining the government`s austerity drive that aims at warding off the economic crisis


5. Bank of England delivers 11th rate hike

• The Bank of England (BoE) raised interest rates for the 11th time in a row on March 23, 2023, but said a surprise resurgence in inflation would probably fade fast, prompting speculation it had ended its run of hikes.
• Sounding more upbeat about the outlook for Britain`s sluggish economy but noting the risks posed by turmoil among global banks, the BoE`s nine rate setters voted 7-2 in favour of a 25 basis-point increase in bank rate to 4.25 per cent, as expected by economists polled by Reuters.
• This rate rise extends a run of increases that began in December 2021, although it was the Monetary Policy Committee`s (MPC) smallest increase since June
