1. Pakistan removed from EU`s list of high-risk countries

• The European Union (EU) has removed Pakistan from its `list of high-risk third countries` that have strategic deficiencies in the Anti Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/ CFT)regime.
• Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari revealed this on March 29, 2023 echoing a similar decision taken by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) months ago when it removed the country from its grey list after almost four years.
• `Pakistani businesses and individuals would no longer be subjected to Enhanced Customer Due Diligence by European legal and economic operators,` he tweeted


2. NA okays bill to `structure` CJP`s suo motu power

• The National Assembly on March 29, 2023 passed the bill aimed at clipping the `unilateral` powers of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) in initiating suo motu cases and constituting benches along with a last-minute addition of two amendments, including a controversial one giving right of appeal to aggrieved persons in the already decided cases, with retrospective effect.
• The bill was passed at a time when a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by CJP Umar Ata Bandial was hearing a petition filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) against the Election Commission of Pakistan`s act of delaying the polls in Punjab in the alleged violation of the apex court`s decision after the CJP took a suo motu notice of the issue last month.
• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif remained present in the house till the passage of the bill which saw opposition only from two newly-elected PTI MNAs Mohsin Leghari and Saleh Muhammad

3. Justice Hilali to take acting charge as first woman CJ of PHC

• Justice Musarrat Hilali became the first female acting chief justice of the Peshawar High Court following her appointment by the president on March 29, 2023.
• As PHC Chief Justice Qaiser Rashid Khan is set to retire on Thursday (today), the law and justice ministry issued two notifications for appointment of acting chief justices. Senior puisne judge Justice Rooh-ul-Amin Khan, who was also appointed acting chief justice, will serve as the CJ for only one day as he is scheduled to retire on March 31 (Friday).
• As per the notification, Justice Hilali will act as the PHC chief justice from April 1 till the appointment of a regular chief justice on the recommendation of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP).
• The JCP has yet to schedule a meeting under Article 175-A of the Constitution for the appointment of a regular chief justice of the PHC


4. Second PN ship carrying relief goods reaches Syria

• Another Pakistan Navy ship, PNS Moawin, which has been deployed on international humanitarian assistance and disaster relief mission, has reached the Syrian city of Lattakia.
• According to a Pakistan Navy statement issued on Wednesday, the ship brought a second consignment of relief goods comprising warm clothes, blankets and ration for the people affected by a powerful earthquake in February that killed thousands and rendered millions homeless in Syria and Turkiye.
• Upon arrival in the Syrian port city, the ship was received by the Lattakia governor, the ambassador of Pakistan to Syria, the commander of the Syrian Navy and other dignitaries


5. Progress made on financing pledges from friendly countries, Senate panel told

• The government on March 29, 2023 said to have achieved `progress` in external financing from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates direly needed to reach a staff-level agreement (SLA) with International Monetary Fund (IMF) that has been in limbo since Feb 9.
• The statement came from Minister of State for Finance and Revenue Dr Aisha Ghaus Pasha before a parliamentary panel on a day UAE`s ambassador in Islamabad Hamad Obaid Ibrahim Salim Al-Zaabi met Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and expressed UAE`s interest `in augmenting and furthering investment in various sectors of the economy of Pakistan`
