6. Pakistani doctor recognised as top faith leader in US

• The US Department of Health and Human Services will honour Dr Farha Abbasi, a Michigan-based Pakistani-American psychiatrist, on March 29, 2023 as one of the top15 women faith leaders in the United States.
• The event `Women on theFrontlines: Celebrating Women Faith Leaders` will be hosted by Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra on Thursday (today), where Dr Abbasi will be recognised for `her incredible work and extraordinary leadership qualities in the service of humanity`.
• She urges using faith as a tool to fight isolation.
• `Imagine being alone in a new country unable to speak the language, surrounded by an unfamiliar culture, and forced to leave your entire life behind,` Dr Abbasi writes in one of her papers on the power of faith in dealing with trauma


7. UK unveils plans to house asylum seekers in military bases

• The UK plans to temporarily house asylum seekers in disused military bases and could use ferries and barges in the future in a bid to reduce hotel bills, immigration minister Robert Jenrick announced on March 29, 2023.
• He told MPs that the government planned to house `several thousand` asylum seekers at repurposed barracks buildings and portable buildings at two former Royal Air Force bases in southeast and eastern England. A separate site on private land in East Sussex in southeast England will also be used, Jenrick added.
• The government is also exploring the `possibility of accommodating migrants in vessels` such as ferries and barges as it looks to reduce a $2.8 billion annual bill for hotel accommodation


8. Riyadh agrees to join SCO

• Saudi Arabia has agreed to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) as a `dialogue partner`, state media reported on Wednesday, the latest indication of closer political ties with China.
• The cabinet approved the decision at a meeting chaired by King Salman, the official Saudi Press Agency reported. The move would grant Riyadh `the status of a dialogue partner in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation`, it said.
• Other countries with observer or dialogue partner status include Egypt, Iran and Qatar


9. Yousaf sworn in as Scotland`s new leader

• Humza Yousaf was sworn in as Scotland`s first minister on March 29, 2023, becoming the first Muslim leader of a government in western Europe but already facing unrest in his party.
• At 37, Yousaf is also the youngest leader yet of the Scottish National Party (SNP), and is vowing to reinvigorate its flagging campaign for independence. But after he won the race to succeed the long-serving Nicola Sturgeon on Monday, his leadership was already being questioned after defeated rival Kate Forbes refused to serve in his cabinet.
• The outgoing finance minister was offered a more junior role by Yousaf, despite coming close to victory. She ended with 48 per cent of the preferential votes of SNP members to his 52pc


10. UN adopts landmark resolution on climate

• The UN General Assembly on March 29, 2023 adopted by consensus and to cheers a resolution calling for the world body`s top court to outline legal obligations related to climate change.
• Pushed for years by Vanuatu and Pacific islander youth, the measure asks the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to lay out nations` obligations for protecting Earth`s climate, and the legal consequences they face if they don`t.
• `Together, you are making history,` UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said, emphasising that even if non-binding, an opinion from the International Court of Justice `would assist the General Assembly, the UN and member states to take the bolder and stronger climate action that our world so desperately needs.` Ultimately cosponsored by more than 130 member states, the resolution had been widely expected to be approved
