- Niger`s new military rulers have stripped France`s ambassador of diplomatic immunity and ordered police to expel him, according to a letter seen on Thursday by AFP, a move that ratchets up tensions with the country`s traditional ally.
- The envoy `no longer enjoys the privileges and immunities attached to his status as member of the diplomatic personnel in the French embassy,` according to their letter, dated Tuesday, to the foreign ministry in Paris
7. US approves first arms to Taiwan under foreign aid programme
- President Joe Biden`s administration has for the first time approved direct US military aid to Taiwan under an assistance programme aimed at foreign governments, officials said on Wednesday, as worries grow over China.
- The State Department informed Congress on Tuesday of the $80 million package, which is small compared with recent sales to Taiwan but marks the first assistance to Taipei under the Foreign Military Financing programme, which generally involves grants or loans to sovereign countries
8. Thailand`s ex-PM Thaksin applies for royal pardon
- Thailand`s jailed former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has requested a royal pardon, a government minister said on Thursday, as rumours of a backroom deal for clemency swirl.
- The 74-year-old billionaire, twice elected PM and ousted in a 2006 military coup, was sent to prison last week immediately after returning to the kingdom from 15 years of self-exile.
- His homecoming coincided with his Pheu Thai party returning to government in alliance with several pro-military parties, sparking widespread speculation that an agreement had been struck to cut his jail time
9. Iceland to resume whaling
- Iceland`s government said that whaling could resume on Friday with stricter conditions and monitoring, after it decided not to extend a temporary two month ban imposed amid animal welfare concerns.
- Iceland is one of just three countries that allow commercial whaling, along with Norway and Japan, in the face of fierce criticism from environmentalists and animal rights` defenders
10. Iran claims foiling Israeli plot against missiles
- Iranian security services claim to have foiled an Israeli sabotage plot against the country`s ballistic missile production and to have arrested several agents involved, state media reported on Thursday.
- An unnamed intelligence official of Iran`s defence ministry blamed arch-enemy Israel`s Mossad spy agency for the alleged plan to sell Iran faulty components that would have blown up the missiles, IRNA news agency said
