1. Senators grill power division on high tariffs, inefficiencies

The power division, along with its subsidiary companies, came under sharp criticism from senators on Tuesday for ongoing inefficiencies, rampant theft and significant losses in the sector, at a time when such shortcomings have led to skyrocketing electricity bills, adversely affecting consumers and fuelling protests across the country.
In a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Power, presided over by its chairman Senator Saifullah Abro, senators proposed a one-slab benefit for all residential users. They insisted that those consuming less than 200 units monthly should remain shielded from tariff hikes, even if their consumption exceeds the threshold for a month or so

2. IMF doesn`t proscribe targeted subsidies for poor, says PM

Targeted power subsidies for disadvantaged socioeconomic classes using around 200 units of electricity were not discouraged or curtailed by the government or the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Caretaker PM Anwaarul Haq Kakar said.
In an interview with Dawn News English Spotlight programme, broadcast on Tuesday, the caretaker PM was asked about the interim government`s relief proposals to the Fund and their subsequent rejection. In response, emphasised the need to support tax-paying economic classes, saying that they had an agreement with the lender to not give any incentives to economic classes which did not contribute to the tax base

3. Pakistan seeks Iran`s help to overcome medicine shortage

Facing shortage of medicine, Pakistan has expressed the desire to seek cooperation of Iran to address the issue.
The drug regulatory authorities of both the countries will devise a comprehensive strategy to ensure uninterrupted supply of life-saving drugs on a fast track basis.
This was decided at a meeting attended by Minister for National Health Services (NHS) Dr Nadeem Jan and Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghaddam on Tuesday

4. `Decision to issue visas made solely by Pakistani embassy`

The US State Department has said it was up to the consular officials at the Pakistan Embassy to issue or reject a visa request by a US citizen, and it did not relate to them.
The issue was raised after recent media reports claimed the Pakistan Embassy had denied visas to US citizens of Pakistani origin because of their links to PTL The reports added that some US citizens were also detained in Pakistan for participating in political activities

5. Global trade finance gap hits record $2.5tr

The global trade finance gap grew to a record $2.5 trillion in 2022 from $1.7tr two years earlier, as rising interest rates, flagging economic prospects, inflation, and geopolitical volatility reduced the capacity of banks to deliver trade financing, according to a report released by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Tuesday.

6. UN agency warns against extraction of sand from world`s oceans

Some six billion tonnes of sand and other sediment is extracted from the world`s seas and oceans every year, the UN said on Tuesday, warning of the devastating toll on biodiversity and coastal communities.

8. EU records 28pc jump in asylum requests this year

The number of migrants lodging asylum applications in the EU has jumped 28 per cent in the first half of this year compared to the same period last year, official figures released on Tuesday showed.
Between January and the end of June this year, there were 519,000 such requests made in the 27-nation bloc and associated countries Switzerland and Norway, the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) said

India`s Supreme Court concluded on Tuesday its hearing on challenges to New Delhi`s 2019 imposition of direct rule in held Kashmir, a decision that led to protests and mass arrests.
