1. Four martyred as army pushes militants back into Afghanistan

At least four security men embraced martyrdom while more than 16 fighters were killed on Wednesday as militants` attempts to enter Pakistan from Afghanistan were foiled by troops deployed along the border with Afghanistan.
In Lower Chitral, militants attacked two security check posts in the southern part of the district in the early hours of Wednesday. The predawn attack targeted check posts in Astui Pass and Jinjiret Koh situated in the south of Lower Chitral, bordering the Afghan province of Nuristan.
Astui Pass is located in the Bumburet Valley, one of the three valleys in southern Chitral where the Kalash community resides


2. Poliovirus found in Karachi and Peshawar sewage

As many as four environmental samples, collected from Karachi and Peshawar, have tested positive for the poliovirus.
According to sources at Pakistan`s National Polio Laboratory at the National Institute of Health (NIH), the lab has confirmed the detection of Type-1 Wild Poliovirus (WPV1) in four environmental (sewage) samples from Karachi and Peshawar.
`As many as three samples were collected from Peshawar, and one sample was collected from District Karachi in the Keamari area,` an official said, requesting not to be named


3. Interior secretary Abdullah Sumbal passes away

Federal Interior Secretary Abdullah Khan Sumbal died of cardiac arrest on Wednesday after suffering from fever for a few days due to food poisoning. He was taken to the CMH Hospital, Lahore, but could not survive. He was 53.
His funeral prayers will be held at Habib Masjid, Tufail Road, Lahore Cantt, after Asr prayers on Thursday. He is survived by his wife and a son


4. Pakistan suggests ways to keep UNSC resolutions alive

Pakistan has suggested setting up a standing committee to ensure the implementation of UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions, such as those on the Kashmir dispute.
At a debate on the council`s working on Tuesday, Pakistan also warned the UNSC that `one state` (a veiled reference to India) appeared determined to destroy a long-running global process for making the 15-member body more representative


5. KP cabinet increases minimum wage to Rs32,000

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa caretaker cabinet on Wednesday approved the monthly minimum wage for unskilled workers in the provincefromRs25,000toRs32,000.
The Rs7,000 wage hike was announced by the government last June while authorising expenditure for July-Oct 202324.
The approval came in the 10th meeting of the caretaker cabinet here with caretaker Chief Minister Azam Khan in the chair, according to an official statement

6. EU tells Turkiye to `address democracy` to join bloc

The European Union`s enlargement commissioner told Turkiye on Wednesday to address issues around democracy and the rule of law if it wants to boost its drive to join the bloc.

8. Summer 2023 was hottest on record, says EU agency

The summer of 2023 was the hottest on record, according to data from the European Union Climate Change Service released on Wednesday.
The three-month period from June through August surpassed previous records by a large margin, with an average temperature of 16.8 degrees Celsius (62.2F) 0.66C above average.
Last month was the also the hottest August on record globally, the third straight month in a row to set such a record following the hottest ever June and July, the EU said on Wednesday


9. At Asean summit, China warns against `new Cold War`

China`s premier said on Wednesday major powers must keep their differences under control and avoid `a new Cold War`, in a thinly veiled reference to Washington, as top Asian and US officials gathered for talks in Indonesia.
Beijing has expressed concern about US-backed blocs forming on its doorstep, while facing disputes with other powers in the region over the South China Sea and other issues
