1. Ministry adamant poll date not in Alvi`s purview

As a degree of uncertainty prevails regarding the timing of the next general elections, President Arif Alvi on Monday continued efforts to convince the caretaker set-up to expedite the process, only to be informed once again that it was the prerogative of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to set a date for the electoral exercise.
This was the second meeting between the president and interim Law Minister Ahmed Irfan Aslam over the past month on the same issue. The ministry informed the president that fixing the date for elections was the sole prerogative of the ECP


2. Soldier martyred in Peshawar blast

A Frontier Corps (FC) soldier embraced martyrdom and nine others, including three civilians, sustained injuries in a roadside explosion on the outskirts of Peshawar on Monday, police said.
The banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for carrying out the attack.


3. Kabul can`t build posts on Pakistani soil: FO

As the Torkham border remained shut for a sixth consecutive day, with loaded vehicles seen parked along the roadside for several kilometres on the Torkham-Peshawar highway, Pakistan regretted the attempt by the Taliban led interim government of Afghanistan to intrude on its territory by building an unlawful structure, and urged the neighbour to respect its sovereignty.
On September 6, Afghan troops resorted to indiscriminate firing, targeting Pakistan military posts, damaging the infrastructure at the Torkham border terminal, and putting the lives of both Pakistani and Afghan civilians at risk, instead of working out a peaceful resolution, when they were stopped from erecting such unlawful structures, Foreign Office (FO) spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch regretted


4. Punjab cabinet`s nod to Rs32,000 minimum salary

The Punjab caretaker cabinet has approved Rs32,000 as minimum salary of workers in the province.
Presided over by caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, the cabinet meeting stressed implementation of the decision to provide relief to the workers.
The cabinet also approved free travel on the metro bus service and orange line metro train to the disabled, the elderly and students

5. Mideast corridor will include trains to India, says Delhi

A new ports and railway corridor for the Middle East and South Asia will include train links to India, an Indian foreign ministry official said on Monday, offering new details about the plan unveiled over the weekend at the G20 summit in Delhi.

8. 9 island states take ocean pollution case to UN court

Leaders of nine small island states turned to the UN maritime court on Monday to seek protection of the world`s oceans from catastrophic climate change that threatens the very existence of entire countries.
The island states are asking the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) to determine if carbon dioxide emissions absorbed by the oceans can be considered pollution, and if so, what obligations countries have to prevent it

9. Kohli, Rahul fire as India trounce Pakistan in rain-hit game

Virat Kohli and returning K.L. Rahul hit unbeaten centuries to lead India`s 228-run thrashing of rivals Pakistan in a lopsided rain-hit Super Four clash of the Asia Cup on Monday`s reserve day.
