  1. Punjab to unveil women development policy
    • Envisioning a `gender-sensitive` Punjab, the provincial government has finally come up with the Punjab Women Development Policy to systematically eradicate all manifestations of explicit and implicit gender discrimination across all spheres of society including governance, development and livelihood.
    • The Punjab Women Development Department has plans to launch the new policy on the International Women`s Day falling on March 8.
    • This year, the world is celebrating the day based on a theme: #PressforProgress.
    • While the World Economic Forum`s 2017 Global Gender Gap Report tells that the gender parity is more than 200 years away, the world thinks that it is critically crucial time to keep motivated and achieve progress.
  2. SC restores review petition against its 2006 judgement on PSM privatization
    • The Supreme Court on Tuesday restored a review petition instituted against its 2006 judgement in which the sale of Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) was annulled.
    • `We find sufficient cause made out, therefore, the review petition is restored and the office is directed to assign a registration number,` Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar said while heading a nine-judge SC bench.
    • Senior counsel Khalid Anwar, representing Arif Habib Securities, said he wanted expunction of certain `defamatory` remarks against his client which were a permanent stain on his reputation.
  3. Federal cabinet bans sale of loose cigarettes
    • The federal cabinet on March 6, 2018 banned the sale of loose cigarettes, in order to prevent children from smoking by making cigarettes more expensive.
    • Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) spokesperson Sajid Hussain Shah said that the ministry had succeeded after two years of efforts to secure a decision in favour of its proposal.
    • Health experts and civil society have been working for several years to ban the sale of loose cigarettes in order to discourage children from smoking.
    • Pakistan banned the sale of 10-cigarette packs in 2010, but the sale ofloose cigarettes continued
    • Smoking is a major cause of lung diseases,accordingto health experts, and over 6.9 million people have been affected by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in Pakistan.
  4. Indian drone shot down in AJK
    • The Pakistan Army on March 6, 2018 shot down an Indian unmanned aerial vehicle that intruded into Azad Kashmir from across the Line of Control on a spy mission.
    • The UAV, or drone, was shot down in Chirikot sector. The troops had taken it into their custody, it added.
    • This is not the first time that the army has shot down a drone in Azad Kashmir. According to the ISPR, it is the fourth one to be shot down in the last one year.
  5. Cabinet approves PIA, PSM privatisation plans
    • The federal cabinet on March 6, 2018 decided to allow privatisation of 49 per cent shares (core business related to management and flight operations) of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).
    • It also took important decisions about the sale of Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM).
    • These decisions were taken at a meeting of the cabinet presided over by Prime Minister Shahid Khagan Abbasi.
    • The cabinet has ratified recommendations of the Cabinet Committee for Disposal of Legislative Cases (CCLC) in its meeting held on Feb 22 and the Cabinet Committee on Privatisation (CCOP) in its meeting held on Feb 16.
  6. Two Koreas to hold summit, North ready for denuclearisation talks: Seoul
    • The leaders of North and South Korea will hold a historic summit in the Demilitarised Zone next month after Pyongyang expressed willingness to give up its nuclear weapons in exchange for security guarantees
    • The North is open to `frank` talks with the United States on denuclearisation and would suspend missile and nuclear tests while dialogue was under way, the South`s national security adviser Chung Eui-yong said after returning from a meeting in Pyongyang with leader Kim Jong Un. US President Donald Trump gave a cautious welcome to the announcement.
  7. Saudi Arabia gives Air India overflight rights for its Israel routes
    • Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Saudi Arabia has agreed to allow Air India to use its airspace in flights to and from Israel in what could indicate a warming of ties.
    • But Air India said that while it had issued such a request, the regulator had yet to give it a positive answer.
    • The new Israel-India route was announced by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Israel in July.
    • In his January reciprocal visit to India, Netanyahu implied the route could pass over Saudi Arabia, which beyond significantly shortening flight time would be a public indication of a warming of ties with Israel.
    • Saudi Arabia and Israel have no official diplomatic ties, like much of the Arab world. Riyadh has consist-ently kept mum on Israeli hints of covert ties with the kingdom.
  8. France sets 15 as legal age of sexual consent
    • France plans to make 15 the age of sexual consent after a public outcry over two cases of sex involving 11-year-old girls.
    • After public consultations and the recommendation of a panel of experts, the government has decided to set the age at 15
    • The issue was brought to the fore after critics and lawmakers said French laws had allowed two men to escape rape charges when they were accused of sex with underage girls.
  9. Pakistan, Nepal for revitalising SAARC
    • Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi during bilateral meeting here exchanged views on revitalising the SAARC Summit in the spirit of the charter
    • India boycotted the holding of SAARC Summit in Pakistan in 2016 and pressurised other members of the organisation to do so.
    • In order to isolate Pakistan in the region, India is now on a mission mode to create a regional alternative in South Asia minus Pakistan.
    • Internal consultations within the government have already started.
  10. Japan navy appoints first female chief of warship unit
    • The Japanese navy said March 6, 2018 it had for the first time appointed a woman as commander of a unit that includes the country’s biggest warship.
    • Ryoko Azuma, 44, will command four warships making up a division with a total of 1,000 crew members. “This is the first time a woman was appointed for the job,” a spokesman for the Maritime Self-Defence Force told AFP. “But she wasn’t chosen because she was a woman.”
