  1. IMF concerned at Pakistan`s weakening economy
    • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on March 7, 2018 expressed concern over Pakistan`s weakening macroeconomic situation, including widening external and fiscal imbalances, reduction in foreign exchange reserves and emerging risks to economic and financial outlook.
    • The IMF executive board asked the government to immediately refocus on near-term policies to preserve macroeconomic stability and get back to fiscal discipline shown under the three-year $6.64 billion multi-tranche Extended Fund Facility (EFF) to minimise risks and economic distortions.
    • In its first post-programme monitoring (PPM) after the completion of fund programme in September last year, the IMF board also raised questions over the medium-term debt sustainability and called for additional revenue measures and containing expenditures.
  2. Senate adopts bill to protect rights of transgender persons
    • The Senate on March 7, 2018 passed a bill aimed at protecting the rights of transgender persons, by prohibiting discrimination against them and prescribing imprisonment of up to six months for those employing members of the marginalised community as beggars or compelling them to beg.
    • Two separate bills on the rights of transgender persons were moved one by Senator Karim Ahmad Khawaja and the other by Senator Rubina Khalid. The two bills were later clubbed together with consensus among members of the Senate`s Functional Committee on Human Rights.
  3. Senate passes bill to revive sick corporate units
    • The Senate has passed the amended Corporate Rehabilitation Bill, 2018 that would provide mechanism for rehabilitation of the distressed companies.
    • Its salient features are: specification of the high court for rehabilitation of distressed companies, extensive plan of rehabilitation in relation to debtor, petition can be filed by qualified creditors and debtors for order of mediation, appointment of insolvency experts to mediation through sole mediators or joint mediators appointed by the court, notice of order of mediation shall be sent to all interested parties by the petitioner, appointment of administrator of the debtor and its responsibilities, plan of rehabilitation to be filed with the court, statement of affairs of debtor to be filed in court, confirmation and implementation of rehabilitation plan, dismissal of the case by the court.
  4. Islamabad advocate general resigns
    • Advocate General of Islamabad Mian Abdul Rauf resigned on March 7, 2018.
    • The advocate general quit the office at a time when the interior ministry had already started searching for a suitable person to replace him and had shortlisted two local lawyers for the post.
    • Last year IHC Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui expressed his concern over the performance of Mian Rauf while hearing a case related to the registration of an FIR against the US Central Intelligence Agency`s (CIA) station chief in Pakistan for carrying out drone attacks in North Waziristan.
  5. China to build rail line in Iran
    • China will build a train line connecting the Iranian port of Bushehr to the rest of the country`s railway network under a $700 million deal signed on March 7, 2018.
    • The agreement was inked in Tehran in the presence of Iranian Transport Minister Abbas Akhoundi and officials from China Machinery Industry Construction Group.
    • It will see the group build a 400-kilometre railway between the Gulf port and the southern city of Shiraz.
    • This would complete the `north-south railway corridor` in line with Iran`s goal of becoming a transport hub for goods between the Gulf, the Sub-continent, Russia and Central Asia.
  6. Saudi crown prince arrives to royal welcome in UK
    • Prime Minister Theresa May defended Britain`s links to security ally Saudi Arabia on March 7, 2018, as Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met Queen Elizabeth for lunch on a high profile to London that has drawn protests over Riyadh`s human rights record.
    • A fiery exchange in parliament between May and opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn underlined tension in Britain over the trip, which is aimed at building a broader economic partnership between the two countries, but has sparked protests about human rights and the war in Yemen.
    • `The link that we have with Saudi Arabia is historic, it is an important one, and it has saved the lives of potentially hundreds of people in this country,` May said, pausing her answer briefly as opposition lawmakers cried `Shame! .
  7. Indian architect wins Pritzker Prize
    • Architect and educator Balkrishna Doshi has been awarded the 2018 Pritzker Architecture Prize, the first Indian to win architecture`s highest honour in its 40-year history
    • The award was announced on March 7, 2018 by Tom Pritzker of the Chicago-based Hyatt Foundation.
    • Doshi has been an architect, urban planner, and educator for 70 years. The foundation called the 90-year-old`s work `poetic and functional,` and noted his ability to create works that both respect eastern culture and enhance quality of life in India.
  8. Sindh Sports Minister elected as youngest ever SOA president
    • The Sindh Sports Minister Sardar Mohammad Bux Khan Mahar was formally elected as president of the Sindh Olympic Association (SOA) for the remaining term in the general body meeting that took place at the Karachi Gymkhana on March 7, 2018. The term expires in January 2020.
    • The place had fallen vacant due to the demise of its president, retired Brig Rashid Ali Malik on Oct 1 last year.
    • Mahar became the youngest ever person to head the SOA in its 70-year-old history and the second to hold dual positions of Sindh Sports Minister as well as SOA president. Earlier, Dr Mohammad Ali Shah held dual positions.
    • It is pertinent to mention that the SOA was founded on the eve of the inaugural National Games held in the city in 1948 and graced by Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah himself.

    • The Pakistan Army spokesperson, Major General Asif Ghafoor, on March 7, 2018 said Pakistan was synonymous with peace and shall be safeguarded at all costs.
    • In a message on a social site about the upcoming Pakistan Day on March 23, the Inter-Services Public Relations director general shared a video and stated that the nation was preparing to celebrate the 78th Pakistan Day in a befitting manner. Pakistan Day commemorates the passing of Lahore Resolution, under which a separate nation for the Muslims of the British Indian empire demanded by Muslim League was passed on March 23, 1940.
