- US gets diplomat involved in road accident out of Pakistan
- The United States has finally succeeded in getting its diplomat involved in a fatal road accident out of Pakistan after the Pakistani officials who had been preventing his exit succumbed to Pentagon`s pressure.
- `We can confirm that the American diplomat who was involved in a tragic accident in Islamabad has departed Pakistan, a US embassy spokesman told on May 14, 2018.
- Colonel Joseph Emanuel Hall, the defence attaché at the US embassy, left Nur Khan Airbase on board an American military aircraft that had come to pick him a couple of days after the diplomat had been refused exit by the Federal Investigation Agency from the same airbase.
- Punjab tables Rs85b supplementary budget
- Punjab Finance Minister Ayesha Ghous Pasha May 14, 2018 presented the supplementary budget amounting to Rs85.40 billion in the Punjab Assembly.
- Dr Ayesha presented 45 demands for grants worth Rs 85.40 billion for supplementary budget for the fiscal year-2017-18. As per Supplementary Budget Statement for the year 2017-18, out of total 45 demands, 23 were supplementary demands (voted) worth Rs 81.604 billion; 17 were token supplementary demands (voted) worth Rs 17,000 and five were supplementary demands (charged) worth Rs 3.798 billion.
- The supplementary budget 2017-18 contained demands for supplementary grants (voted) under 23 heads- Land Revenue Rs 96.005 million, Provincial Excise Rs 126.443 million, Forests Rs 56.630 million, Charges on Account of Motor Vehicle Act Rs 55.252 million, Irrigation and Land Reclamation Rs 2.759 billion, Administration of Justice Rs 822.741 million, Jails and Convicts Settlements Rs 52.563 million, Police Rs 5.607 billion, Education 19.863 billion, Health Services 17.162 billion, Agriculture 7.603 billion, Fisheries Rs 76.5 million, Veterinary Rs 1.698 billion, Co-Operation Rs 158.912 million, Industries Rs 758.838 million, Miscellaneous Departments Rs 500.379 million, Civil Works Rs 1.447 billion, Communication Rs 585.430 million, Stationary and Printing Rs 1.062 million, Civil Defence Rs 30.997 million, State Trading in Food Grains and Sugar Rs 189.174 million, Irrigation Works Rs 2.845 billion, and Roads and Bridges Rs 19.104 billion.
- Balochistan presents budget with massive Rs61.9bn deficit
- Adviser to the Balochistan Chief Minister on Finance Dr Ruqayya Saeed Hashmi presented the budget 2018-19 in the provincial assembly on May 14, 2018.
- The budget documents show that Balochistan is facing a big hole of Rs61.9 billion in its planned development investment of Rs88.2bn for the next financial year as the pace of growth in its total income is projected to slow down to4.9pc against 9.3pc estimated for 2017-18.
- The slower increase in income and a large development investment gap notwithstanding, the province plans to create 8,035 new jobs in education, health, levies and other departments that will have a total financial impact of Rs4.1bn on the new budget.
- The budget documents project the overall provincial income federal transfers, provincial tax4.9pc against 9.3pc estimated for 2017-18.
- Almost 80pc of the provincial income will comprise federal transfers from the divisible pool (Rs224.1bn) and straight transfers (Rs9.0bn) with provincial own taxes contributing 3.5pc or Rs10.2bn and non-tax receipts 1.6pc or Rs4.9bn to it.
- New framework for talks with Afghanistan becomes operational
- The new Pakistan-Afghanistan bilateral engagement framework Afghanistan-Pakistan Action Plan for Peace and Solidarity (APAPPS) became operational on May 14, 2018 with both sides hoping that its implementation would contribute to promoting peace in the region.
- `Both sides agreed that effective and full implementation of APAPPS would contribute towards the common objectives of eliminating terrorism and achieving peace, stability, prosperity and development of the people of the two countries,` a statement jointly issued by the foreign ministries of Pakistan and Afghanistan said.
- Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua led the Pakistani side at the fourth meeting of APAPPS, whereas Afghan Deputy Foreign Minister Hekmat Khalil Karzai headed the Afghan delegation.
- Israel kills 55 Palestinians as US opens Jerusalem embassy
- Israeli forces killed 55 Palestinians on the Gaza border in the conflict`s bloodiest day in years on May 14, 2018 as clashes and protests coincided with the deeply controversial opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem.
- The surge in fatalities led South Africa to recall its ambassador in Israel `with immediate effect until further notice` while condemning the deaths `in the strongest terms possible`.
- The clashes, which left more than 2,400 Palestinians wounded, erupted before a White House delegation and Israeli officials opened the embassy at an inauguration ceremony in Jerusalem and continued throughout the day.
- It was the bloodiest day in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since a 2014 Gaza war.
- The embassy inauguration nonetheless went on as planned, attended by a Washington delegation that included US President Donald Trump`s daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner, both White House aides.
- Ivanka Trump helped declare the new embassy open and a plaque and seal were unveiled before the 800 guests at the ceremony.
- Trump addressed the ceremony by video.
- Heads of four Senate committees elected
- Senators Rubina Khalid, Hilalur Rehman, Hidayatullah Khan and Sitara Ayaz were on May 14, 2018 elected chairpersons of Senate standing committees on information technology, overseas Pakistanis, communications and climate change, respectively.
- Since the election of new chairman, Senate has completed elections of 30 out of a total of 42 committees.
- All standing committees held their inaugural meetings at the Parliament House to formally elect chairpersons.
- Pak Navy establishes Recruitment & Selection Centre at Muzaffarabad
- The inauguration ceremony of the establishment of Pakistan Navy Recruitment and Selection Centre in Muzaffarabad, AJ&K was held on May 14, 2018.
- Vice Admrial Abdul Aleem, Chief of Staff (Personnel) was the chief guest on the occasion. Upon arrival, the chief guest was received by Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Organization and Methods).
- The recruitment centre would not only provide round the year recruitment facilities at the doorstep to the youth hailing from AJ&K and adjacent areas but would also promote national integration and regional harmony within Pakistan Navy.
- Hardline separatist appointed leader of Catalonia
- Quim Torra, a newcomer to politics who has campaigned fiercely for Catalonia`s independence, was appointed regional president on Monday vowing to keep fighting for a break from Spain. Torra`s election by the regional parliament paves the way for a new government in Catalonia after months of politicallimbo.
- Torra, handpicked as presidential candidate by deposed, exiled leader Carles Puigdemont, scraped through the parliamentary vote -66 separatist lawmakers voted for him, 65 non-independence MPs against and four abstained.
- The 55-year-old father of three pledged to respect the result of an independence referendum, which was held on October 1 despite a court ban and marred by police violence. Catalan separatist authorities said 90 per cent of the 2.2 million people who cast their ballot in the referendum out of 5.5 million eligible voters opted to break from Spain.
- Water on Jupiter moon
- Scientists presented further evidence on Monday for water plumes on the surface of Jupiter`s moon Europa, raising hopes of probing the jets for signs of life around the second planet from Earth.
- Given the suspected abundance of warm, liquid water under its kilometers thick ice shell, the moon is considered a `top candidate` by NASA for life on a Solar System body other than Earth.
- Twice before has NASA reported evidence, from its Hubble Space Telescope, for the existence of water plumes on Europa, though this interpretation has caused much debate.
- O`Brien scores Ireland`s first Test hundred
- Kevin O`Brien scored Ireland`s first Test hundred as the hosts finished at 319 for seven, a lead of 139 runs, at stumps on the fourth day of their inaugural Test against Pakistan at Malahide on May 14, 2018 after being made to follow on.
- It was the 34-year-old O`Brien`s first century for Ireland since he made the fastest-ever World Cup hundred by any batsman, off 50 balls, against England at Bangalore in 2011.
