“CAN YOU TEACH ME ENGLISH?” Is one wrong question with no answer on my side. No language has a shortcut formula to learn in a week or so, it takes practice and practice.
If you’re interested to improve your English language, for CSS or for any other reason, I have gathered a few tips for you to see. I don’t claim to be an English teacher, just sharing things I have done, since childhood.
1. GET AN ENGLISH GRAMMAR BOOK!
If you’re at level zero or have problems in tenses/grammar, here is your first step. Doesn’t matter whether you have fancy words in your speech or not, if your grammar is faulty, everything’s a fail. Moreover, I think it doesn’t really matter “which book?” Just buy any available in the market and go through it once, cover to cover.
2. PRACTICE IS THE KEY!
If you plan on taking CSS, you should pick newspaper up, go through editorial articles and observe the written expression. Try to incorporate that in your writing style, by practicing precise out of them.
3. SWITCH ON ENGLISH SUBTITLES!
Whenever you watch any English movie/drama/video/documentary, switch the subtitles on; it helps you without putting in effort.
4. IMPROVE VOCABULARY, GRADUALLY!
Do not try to cram lists of fancy words all at once! It never works. Take one word/phrase a day! Paste it on your study wall / phone’s wallpaper and try to inculcate in your daily speech.
5. CSS LEVEL ENGLISH?
It’s a myth. If you have a decent written expression, with NO grammar mistakes, and not-so-fancy vocab, you’re good to go! If you think big words can compensate for bad grammar, you’re wrong here! Refer to point 1 again from this!
Now, don’t come at me accusing me of encouraging the colonial mindset. This post is a result of dozens of requests. Hope it helps!
If you have any more questions, drop them in the comments. I’ll get back to you there!
