1. Pakistan`s exports to Italy record 49pc growth

• Pakistan`s exports to Italy recorded a 49 per cent growth on a year-on-year basis to $786 million in the outgoing fiscal year 2020-21 despite the fact that the Covid-19 pandemic had hit the Italian market.
• Pakistan`s Ambassador to Italy Jauhar Saleem said Pakistan posted trade surplus of $300 million, which is 49pc higher than the previous year`s figure, according to a statement of the embassy shared with the media.
• Italy has been among the first countries in Europe that were severely hit by the pandemic. Italian GDP fell as low as 9.6pc in 2020, which is the highest fall since World War II. Moreover, Italian imports from non-EU countries declined by 14pc


2. Airlines start checking vaccination certificates of passengers

• The airlines staff, including that of the national flag carrier Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), started checking vaccination certificates of passengers on all flights from August 1, 2021 before boarding in the light of guidelines of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC).
• The NCOC has made the vaccine certificate mandatory for air travel, with effect from August 1, as part of the government`s steps to curb the spread of Covid-19. A total of eight air travel1ers not having the immunisation certificate were stopped from boarding flights at all airports across the country on the first day of the travel ban on unvaccinated people


3. Moderna vaccination starts in KP today as virus cases surge

• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government will start Moderna vaccination at all the centres across the province today (August 1, 2021) as Covid-19 cases have been on the rise for the last two days.
• Positivity rate for the virus has reached more than five per cent in Peshawar, Abbottabad, Nowshera, Swabi and Mardan districts of the province.
• The province reported 584 new cor-onavirus patients on Sunday and 591 on Saturday, the highest number of cases over the past two months in single day. The rise in number of cases prompted Chief Secretary Dr Kazim to issue strict directives to the administration to ensure adherence to Covid-19 precautions


4. European Parliament members call for implementing UN`s Kashmir resolutions

• At least 16 members of European Parliament from different political groups have written to the European Commission president to use all his resources for implementing UN resolutions on Kashmir.
• The groups included The Greens/ European Free Alliance (Greens/EFA), the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D), The Left in the European Parliament GUE/NGL, Renew Europe -RE and Non-Inscrits NI (independent and non-attached members).
• In a letter to Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen, and VP Josep Borrell, and received here by Kashmir Watch, the MEPs said that the EU should use all its leverage and tools to cooperate with Indian and Pakistani partners to honour the pledge made to the Kashmiris by the international community and create an environment conducive to the implementation of the United Nations resolutions. `We, undersigned members of the European Parliament, are writing to you to bring your attention to the alarming human rights and humanitarian situation in Jammu and Kashmir


5. Chinese cities test millions as virus cases surge

• Chinese cities rolled out mass testing of millions of people and imposed fresh travel restrictions as health authorities battled on Sunday to contain the country`s most widespread coronavirus outbreak in months.
• China on August 1, 2021 reported 75 new coronavirus cases with 53 local transmissions, with a cluster linked to an eastern airport now reported to have spread to over 20 cities and more than a dozen provinces.
• The outbreak is geographically the largest to hit China in several months after the country`s successes in largely snuffing out the pandemic within its borders last year


6. Hamas re-elects Haniyeh as supreme leader

• Ismail Haniyeh has been re-elected as leader of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, officials said on August 1, 2021, cementing his control of the organisation which rules the Gaza Strip and has fought multiple violent conflicts with Israel.
• Haniyeh, Hamas chief since 2017, has controlled the group`s political activities in Gaza, the Israeli occupied West Bank and the diaspora largely from outside Gaza, splitting his time between Turkey and Qatar for the past two years.


7. YouTube suspends Australian channel over `misinformation`

• YouTube said on August 1, 2021 it had barred Sky News Australia from uploading new content for one week, citing concerns about Covid-19 misinformation.
• The move comes after a review of posts uploaded by the Rupert Murdoch-owned TV channel, which has a substantial online presence.
• `We have clear and established Covid-19 medical misinformation policies to prevent the spread of Covid-19 misinformation that could cause real-world harm,` a YouTube statement said.
• With 1.86 million YouTube subscribers, the channel which is owned by a subsidiary of Murdoch`s News Corp has a conservative following well beyond Australia.


8. T20 series suffers second washout

• Torrential rain which left a sodden outfield resulted in the abandonment of the third Twenty 20 International between the West Indies and Pakistan at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on August 1, 2021.
• Just eight balls were bowled at the start of the match with the home side reaching 15 without loss off eight deliveries before showers drove the players off the field. The rain intensified to such an extent that it left the ground waterlogged in a matter of minutes


9. Italy hails new sprint king, milestone medals in pool

• Lamont Marcell Jacobs won the most coveted crown in athletics on August 1, 2021, giving Italy its first 100 metres gold on a night of high drama in Tokyo.
• As Jacobs stormed to the first Olympic title of the post Usain Bolt era, the fate of a Belarusian sprinter`s Tokyo Games was playing out at a nearby airport.
• Krystsina Tsimanouskaya, who had been due to compete in the women`s 200 metres on Monday, said she had sought the protection of Japanese police at Tokyo`s Haneda airport after being taken to the airport against her wishes


10. India and Belgium join Australia, Germany in hockey semis

• India reached the semi-finals of the men`s hockey tournament at the Olympics for the first time since 1980 thanks to a 3-1 win over Britain on August 1, 2021 to set up a showdown with Belgium at the Tokyo Games.
• Australia and Germany will contest the other semi-final.
• India, who had won the last of their eight Olympic hockey gold medals at the 1980 Moscow Games, led 2-0 at halftime thanks to goals by Dilpreet Singh and Gurjant Singh. After conceding a goal in the 45th minute, India sealed the win when Hardik Singh made it 3-1 with just minutes left to play
