1. No formal talks or agreement with TTP, says Sana

• A day after an attack claimed by the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) took the lives of four people in Quetta, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah denied the initiation of formal talks with the terror outfit and vowed a crushing response by security forces to nip the terror threat in the bud.
• Addressing a press conference in the federal capital on Thursday, the interior minister said the government had not reached a settlement with the banned outfit, nor had it initiated any sort of formal dialogue with the banned group in the past. In an apparent reference to parlays with the outfit before the end of the ceasefire, the minister said these were the kind of talks `which are held even in a state of war`.
• According to Mr Sanaullah, the military leadsership had been authorised to hold dialogue with the TTP under the Constitution, but only with those who were ready to lay down arms and peacefully become a part of society. He, however, said there were several factions within the TTP, some of whom wanted reconciliation while some still wanted to fight the Pakistani state


2. One killed in attack on S. Waziristan girls school

• One man was killed and a security official was injured in an attack on a girls` school in the Azam Warsak area of South Waziristan district on December 1, 2022.
• According to the district police, unknown militants opened fire from a nearby mountain during Parents` Day celebrations at the Army Public School for Girls. The students, par-ents, staff and security personnel, who were present inside the school at the time of the attack, remained unhurt.
• The deceased, identified as Masti Khan, was passing by the school when a bullet hit him, a police official said. The injured security official was shifted to the hospital.
• As security forces retaliated, the attackers fled to the Pakistan-Afghanistan border area, an official said


3. Global Fund commits $20m to support health systems

• The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has committed $20 million to Pakistan in emergency funding to support health systems faced with climate change disasters.
• Together with the new allocation, the total Global Fund emergency support to Pakistan in 2022 has reached $30m. Massive flooding in Pakistan has led to a severe hike in cases of malaria, says a press release of the Global Fund.
• The Global Fund approved an initial $10m in emergency funding in September to ensure access and distribution of essential medicines and health services in Pakistan.
• The emergency funds in Pakistan will be used to cover HIV, TB, and Malaria programme activities, such as providing sanitation kits, nutritional support for children and water purification/filters. It will also be used to renovate health facilities and replace destroyed equipment in laboratories

4. Chinese firm to again operationlise entire PSCA infrastructure

• Ending years-long differences, the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) and a Chinese technology company signed a new settlement agreement here at the authority`s headquarters on Thursday to operationalise the entire PSCA infrastructure, including cameras.
• According to the agreement, the Punjab government will not have to pay any additional amount and the Chinese firm will carry out the maintenance works at the previous dollar rate of Rs104 when the initial agreement was signed. A spokesperson for the PSCA said Chinese Consul General Mr Zhao Shiren and provincial ministers, the CM`s Adviser on Home Affairs Umar Sarfraz Cheema and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Raja Basharat were present on the occasion of the signing of a new agreement.
• Acting Punjab inspector general of police Kanwar Shah Rukh, Huawei Pakistan Deputy Chief Executive Officer Ahmad Bilal Masood and senior officials from the company also attended the event

5. Macron raises subsidies for US goods at summit with Biden

• French President Emmanuel Macron raised his country`s and European concerns about subsidies for US-made products at a summit with Joe Biden in Washington on December 1, 2022.
• The French grievance related to a recently adopted law, known as the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), a $430 billion bill that offers massive subsidies for US goods.
• Macron and other European leaders say the legislative package signed by Biden in August is unfair to non-American companies and would be a serious blow to their economies as Europe deals with the fallout from Russia`s invasion of Ukraine.
• At a meeting on Wednesday with US lawmakers, President Macron was quoted as saying the act was `super aggressive` toward European companies, one participant said

6. Letter bomb wave targets Spanish PM, US embassy

• Spanish police were investigating on December 1, 2022 a series of letter bombs sent to targets including the prime minister and the US embassy, similar to one which went off at the Ukrainian embassy, hurting a staff member.
• The interior ministry revealed that an envelope with `pyrotechnic material` had arrived at Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez`s official residence on Nov 24. It was destroyed in a controlled explosion.
• Spain`s High court meanwhile announced it had broadened an initial investigation over the Ukraine embassy letter bomb to cover the all the other incidents


7. UN launches record $51.5bn emergency funding appeal

• The UN appealed for record funds for aid next year, as the Ukraine war and other conflicts, climate emergencies and the still-simmering pandemic push more people into crisis, and some towards famine.
• The United Nations` annual Global Humanitarian Overview estimated that 339 million people worldwide will need some form of emergency assistance next year a staggering 65 million more people than the estimate a year ago.
• `It`s a phenomenal number and it`s a depressing number,` UN aid chief Martin Griffiths told reporters in Geneva, adding that it meant `next year is going to be the biggest humanitarian programme` the world has ever seen

8. Indian SC to hear Bilkis rape case again

• Gujarat`s gang-rape victim Bilkis Bano challenged the recent remission of sentence and release of convicts in the 2002 case of brutal assault and the murder of her family, and the Supreme Court said it would consider listing the matter for hearing.
• A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha took note of the submissions of lawyer Shobha Gupta that the victim herself has challenged the grant of remission and release of the convicts, and the matter be listed for hearing.
• She said that Justice Ajay Rastogi, who was part of the bench which had heard other similar pleas against the remission, was now part of a Constitution Bench hearing.
