1. Govt dissolves flood response liaison centre

• Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal on December 5, 2022 announced dissolution of National Flood Response Coordination Centre (NFRCC), hailing its role in mitigating the impact of the recent massive floods.
• Speaking at an NFRCC function, the federal minister said flood damages could have been much more, but coordinated efforts helped reduce the impact of the tragedy.
• Appreciating the NFRCC`s role, the minister said the world was surprised over Pakistan handing of such a huge calamity with less human loss. He said the capability and coordination for disaster management under the umbrella of NFRCC played a key role in helping Pakistan accomplish the gigantic task


2. Russian fuel on discounted price soon

• Russia has agreed to provide crude oil, petrol and diesel to Pakistan at discounted rates besides long-term contracts for LNG supply and construction of gas pipelines, said Minister of State for Petroleum Musadik Malik.
• Mr Malik, who returned from Moscow visit, said that detailed terms and conditions of the discounted oil commodities would be settled during the upcoming visit of Russian Energy Minister to Islamabad by mid-January, but rates would be similar to the discount being given to other countries or even cheaper.
• Before that visit, the two sides would crystallise proposals to a stage that an executive summary or an agreement could be signed and supplies start flowing, the minister said, adding that both sides would designate respective firms to negotiate terms and conditions


3. ECC okays import of 0.95m tonnes of wheat

• The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet on December 5, 2022 accepted offers for the import of almost 950,000 tonnes of wheat including 450,000 tonnes from Russia at the same rate of $372 per tonne.
• With this, Russia has become the single largest wheat supplier to Pakistan this year, taking total quantities to 750,000 tonnes.
• The meeting of the ECC presided over by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar also approved the change of the title of the revolving fund account for CPEC Independent Power Producers from `Pakistan Energy Revolving Fund` to `Pakistan Energy Revolving Account` to satisfy Chinese financial institutions as required under the CPEC framework agreement


4. IS attacked embassy to `sow distrust with Pakistan`

• The Taliban regime said on December 5, 2022 the attack on Pakistan`s embassy, claimed by the militant Islamic State group, was carried out with the involvement of unidentified foreign groups with intention of sowing distrust with Pakistan.
• In Islamabad, Pakistan`s Foreign Office said they remained in active contact with the Afghan authorities and expressed the confidence that the Dec 2 incident would be fully investigated and the perpetrators and their abettors would be brought to account.
• A Pakistani guard was wounded in the attack that FO called an attempt to assassinate its head of mission, Ubaidur Rehman Nizamani. Ambassador Nizamani escaped unhurt in the attack.
• The Taliban said they had arrested one suspect and recovered two guns while their spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed the suspect was a foreign IS member

5. World urged to help Afghanistan deal with worst-ever food crisis

• Experts blamed poor Taliban governance and international policies for the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan where more than 90 percent of the households go hungry, says a report published on Monday.
• The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has already described this as `the worst humanitarian crisis on Earth` while the international community still ponders how to help Afghans without benefiting the Taliban.
• `International donor assistance was reduced to a trickle when the Taliban seized power last year, and the cutoffs were economically devastating,` says another report published by the Foreign Policy magazine. But the Taliban regime too shares the blame as it `has more capacity to provide relief than it lets on. It is generating revenue, especially through border trade, but it blames the crisis on Western sanctions,` the report adds

6. Three killed in blasts at two Russian airbases

• Russia rained long-range missiles on Ukraine on December 5, 2022, killing two people, destroying homes in the southeast and causing power outages, but Kyiv said its air defences had limited the damage.
• Air raid sirens blared across the country and men, women and children huddled in the capital`s cavernous metro system to take cover during the latest big wave of missile strikes since its Feb 24 invasion of Ukraine.
• Moscow has been targeting Ukraine`s power grid in intense waves of attacks since October, and state energy company Ukrenergo, which operates the national power grid, said more infrastructure had been hit on Monday Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal later said energy facilities had been hit in the regions of Kyiv, Vinnytsia in west-central Ukraine and Odesa in the south, but that Ukraine`s energy system was still functioning

7. Construction begins on world`s biggest telescope

• Australia on December 5, 2022 started building a vast network of antennas in the Outback, its section of what planners say will eventually become one of the most powerful radio telescopes in the world.
• When complete, the antennas in Australia and a network of dishes in South Africa will form the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), a massive instrument that will aim to untangle mysteries about the creation of stars, galaxies and extraterrestrial life.
• The idea for the telescope was first conceived in the early 1990s, but the project was plagued by delays, funding issues and diplomatic jockeying.
• The SKA Observatory`s Director General Philip Diamond described the beginning of its construction as `momentous`

• They were ahead after seven minutes when Raphinha`s low cross reached Vinicius Jr and he expertly lifted the ball above the charging goalkeeper and three defenders.
