1. US reiterates support for flood recovery efforts

• The United States has reiterated its commitment to working with Pakistan to support flood recovery efforts in the country.
• US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asia Elizabeth Horst concluded her two-day visit to Islamabad on December 09, 2022, during which she discussed the US support for Pakistan`s flood recovery with government leaders.
• A press release, issued by the US Embassy, said her discussions underscored the US government`s commitment to working with Pakistan to improve access to renewable energy, respond to climate change and address challenges that stand in the way of expanding trade and investment between the two countries


2. UK sanctions controversial Sindh cleric

• A controversial pir from Sindh was placed on the British government`s sanctions list on December 09, 2022, making Pakistan one of 11 countries where rights violators will be punished.
• In a comment to Dawn, the British High Commission said: `The UK takes freedom of religion or belief very seriously and is committed to protecting minorities around the world. The new package of sanctions targets those violating fundamental freedoms. This includes Mian Abdul Haq, a cleric of the Bharchundi Sharif shrine in Ghotki, Sindh, who is responsible for forced marriages and forced religious conversions of non-Muslims and minors. This sanctions package does not include any other Pakistani national.
• The sanctions effectively mean that designated individuals will be unable to do any business or undertake economic activity with UK citizens or businesses, and that they will be denied entry to the UK


3. Air ambulance service to be launched

• Sky Wings Aviation Company is going to launch an air ambulance service in the name of slain journalist Arshad Sharif.
• Arshad Sharif Shaheed Air Ambulance Service will be available on domestic routes, said Chief Executive Officer Imran Aslam.
• A King Air 200 and a Cessna 402C, both fully equipped with medical equipment, will be used for the air ambulance service from hospital to hospital on domestic destinations


4. `Google to open office next week`

• While Twitter and Facebook have expressed their inability to establish offices in Pakistan in near future, the world`s largest search engine and video-sharing platform Google is set to open a liaison office in Pakistan.
• IT and Telecom Minister Syed Aminul Haque on December 09, 2022 announced the global giant has already registered itself as a company in Pakistan.
• `A delegation of Google is scheduled to come to Pakistan early next week from Singapore and the company will likely announce the establishment of a functional office here,` Mr Haque told.

5. US rejects WTO steel ruling

• Washington condemned the World Trade Organisation`s verdict on December 09, 2022 on the punitive US tariffs imposed on national security grounds on steel imports from China and other countries.

6. US Congress passes bill to protect same-sex marriage

• The US Congress passed landmark legislation on Thursday to protect same-sex marriage under federal law, and President Joe Biden vowed to quickly sign the measure.
• The vote in the House of Representatives saw 39 Republicans join a united Democratic majority in a rare show of bipartisanship, provoking loud cheers on the noor less than 10 days after the Senate passed the same bill.
• `Today, Congress took a critical step to ensure that Americans have the right to marry the person they love, Biden said in a statement.


7. Japan, UK, Italy to make next-generation fighter jet

• Britain, Italy and Japan said on December 09, 2022 they will jointly develop a future fighter jet in a project that UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said would guarantee national security and safeguard thousands of jobs.
• The three nations held out the prospect of cooperation with European and US allies, which are developing their own `sixth-generation` planes, vowing to maintain `interoperability` among all the allies against threats from the likes of China and Russia.
• The new `Global Combat Air Programme` is slated to produce its first jets by 2035, merging the three nations` costly existing research into new aerial war technology, from stealth capacity to high-tech sensors

8. France, Spain to build hydrogen pipeline at a cost of $2.6bn

• France and Spain have agreed in principle to build an underwater pipeline between Marseille and Barcelona at a cost of $2.6 billion to carry green hydrogen, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Friday, adding he hoped the European Union would partly fund the project.
• The pipeline will have a capacity of two million tonnes a year and be ready by the end of the decade, Sanchez said at a summit of Mediterranean European Union leaders in the south-eastern Spanish port city of Alicante.
• The decision to pursue the project comes as an energy crisis caused by the war in Ukraine has accelerated European plans to bolster renewable energy as an alternative to Russian gas


9. Xi`s visit ends Saudi Arabia`s `monogamous marriage`

• The United States is not asking Saudi Arabia to choose between Washington and Beijing, but it does see Chinese President Xi Jinping`s visit to the country as an attempt to exert influence in the region.
• The comments came at two separate briefings this week at the White House and the State Department as Mr Xi completed his two-day visit to Saudi Arabia.
• `It`s certainly not a surprise that President Xi is travelling around,` John Kirby, spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, told reporters on Wednesday. `We are mindful of the influence that China is trying to grow around the world


10. Argentina survive Dutch scare to reach semi-final

• Argentine goalkeeper Emi Martinez saved penalties from Virgil van Dijk and Steven Berghuis before Lautaro Martinez scored the winning spot kick to secure them a 4-3 shootout win over the Netherlands on December 09, 2022 after their World Cup quarter-final finished 2-2 after 120 minutes.
• In a scrappy half-hour of extra time with the scores level, Enzo Fernandez rattled the post in the closing seconds while Martinez and German Pezzella also had efforts blocked or parried away as Argentina desperately pushed for a winner.
• Argentina will next face Croatia in the semifinal
