1. Three killed as suicide attacker rams bike into convoy

• Three civilians were killed and 14 others, including nine security personnel, wounded in a suicide attack in the Sargardan area of North Waziristan tribal district on December 14, 2022.
• Security officials said a convoy of security forces was on its way from Datta Khel tehsil to Miramshah when the suicide bomber riding a motorbike hit it.
• They said the deceased and the wounded were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital, Miramshah.
• The area was cordoned off by security forces after the incident.
• No more details about the incident were immediately available. The Inter-Services Public Relations, the media wing of the military, has not issued any statement about the incident


2. Talks on 9th review productive so far: IMF

• International Monetary Fund (IMF) Resident Representative for Pakistan Esther Perez Ruiz has said that discussions between Islamabad and the international lender on the 9th review of the $7 billion Extended Fund Facility had been `productive` so far.
• Pakistan entered a $6bn IMF programme in 2019, which was increased to $7bn earlier this year. The programme`s 9th review is currently pending with remote talks being held between IMF officials and the government for the release of $1.18bn.
• `Discussions to date in the context of the 9th review have been productive, and have enabled a revision to the macroeconomic outlook post floods as well as an in-depth evaluation of fiscal, monetary, exchange rate, and energy policies adopted since the completion of the combined 7th and 8th reviews,` Ruiz told


3. Hina urges world to hold India accountable

• Pakistan on December 14, 2022 called upon the international community and the United Nations to hold India accountable for perpetrating terrorism in the country with undeniable and indisputable evidence available.
• Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar at a press briefing on the dossier regarding India`s involvement in terrorism in Pakistan said repeated terror incidents reflected India`s persistent hostility and the use of terrorist proxies against the country.
• Ms Khar was referring to evidence of India`s involvement in the Johar Town blast in Lahore last year, that killed three people and injured 24 others.
• Ms Khar said no other country had used terrorism better than India that played the victim card despite being the biggest perpetrator of terrorism

4. Registration of several FIRs in single offence against law: IHC

• The Islamabad High Court on December 14, 2022 observed that registration of several first information reports (FIRs) of single occurrence is against the law.
• Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, while hearing petitions filed by Information and Broadcasting Secretary Shahera Shahid, Pakistan Television Managing Director Sohail Ali Khan and Director News Rashid Baig over registration of FIRs against them in Punjab, remarked that the high court would settle this issue once and for all. The judge issued a restraining order against registration of further FIRs against them over the same offence.
• The Punjab police had registered several FIRs against them as well as PML-N leader Mian Javed Latif under different sections of the Pakistan Penal Code and Anti Terrorism Act for airing the latter`s press conference on the state run PTV


5. Pakistan, Tajikistan vow to foster ties in various sectors

• Pakistan and Tajikistan on December 14, 2022 vowed to enhance bilateral cooperation in the fields of energy, rail and road connectivity, trade, investment, agriculture and culture.
• The two sides also pledged to complete much-awaited Central Asia-South Asia (CASA-1000) power project to meet energy needs.
• Both states reiterated these commitments on the first day of a two-day official visit of Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon to Pakistan.
• President Rahmon and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also held a one-on-one meeting followed by a joint statement

6. First 5G innovation lab set up to determine telecom service`s utility

• Pakistan`s first 5G innovation lab was set up on December 14, 2022 at the National University of Science and Technology (Nust) in a joint venture between the industry and the academia.
• The target of the innovation lab is to determine the utility of 5G through the social-eco lenses, and launch indigenous solutions related to health, education, mobility and businesses which suit the local environment. The `innovation lab` is a research project powered by Jazz and Huawei technologies, while various disciplines of Nust will be involved to determine the impact and utility of 5G telecom services in the Pakistani society.
• By leveraging its high bandwidth, low latency, and advanced security the project will help researchers to work on potential use cases for 5G in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI), augmented and virtual reality and healthcare sector, manufacturing and service industry, agriculture, security, disaster management, entertainment, and the public sector


7. Remittances decline 14pc in November

• Remittances sent by overseas Pakistanis declined by 14 per cent in November this year. The inflows fell by 9.6 per cent during the first five months of the current fiscal year (FY23).
• The latest data released by the State Bank on December 13, 2022 showed that the remittances kept falling and declined to $2.1 billion in November from $2.5bn during the same month last year. The inflows declined by 5pc compared to $2.215bn in October this year.
• During July-Nov FY23, the remittances fell by $1.279bn (9.6pc) to $12bn from $13.286bn during the same period last fiscal year

8. US launches space force unit in South Korea

• The United States military launched a space force unit in South Korea on December 14, 2022 that will help better detect ballistic missile launches from North Korea.
• North Korea has carried out a record breaking blitz of weapons tests this year, including its newest intercontinental ballistic missile last month.
• The new unit will provide `near-real-time detection and warning of ballistic missile launches`, according to a statement from US Forces Korea (USFK).


9. State of emergency declared in Peru

• Peru declared a nationwide state of emergency on December 1
• , 2022 amid violent protests against the ouster of ex-president Pedro Castillo that have left seven people dead.
• The announcement came as a judge ordered Castillo to remain in prison, on charges of rebellion and conspiracy for another 48 hours ahead of a release hearing.
• Castillo`s arrest last week after he tried to dissolve congress and rule by decree has sparked days of nationwide protests that quickly escalated into violence
