1. Militants seize part of Bannu CTD centre, take hostages

• Detained militants inside a Bannu CTD facility on December 18, 2022 took over its compound, held interrogators hostage and demanded safe evacuation to Afghanistan, while in a separate terrorist attack four policemen were martyred in Lakki Marwat, police confirmed.
• Two security personnel were injure d in the Bannu standoff that continue d till late in the evening.
• However, Special Assistant to KP chief minister Barrister Muhammad All Saif claimed the situation was `under control` and security forces had started an operation.
• The militants, detained at the facility run by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police`s Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), managed to break out of the lockups and held security personnel hostage


2. MTI Act repeal bill to be tabled in parliament tomorrow

• While the bill to repeal the Medical Teaching Institution (MTI) Act 20211s going to be tabled in the joint sitting of parliament on Tuesday, employees of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) urged the legislators to pass it unanimously.
• The employees, who held protests which ended after a fortnight this month, believed that with the repeal of the MTI the board of governors (BoG) at PIMS will be abolished and they will get back the status of civil servants.
• According to the agenda item of the joint sitting, Member National Assembly (MNA) Jam Abdul Karim Bijar will move the bill to repeal the Federal MTI Act (PIMS Bill 2022) as passed by the National Assembly and Senate and returned by the president for consideration under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution


3. Bilawal arrives in US capital for talks

• As Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari arrives in the American capital on December 18, 2022, he has a difficult mission: underlining the need for stronger ties with the United States without disturbing its close relationship with China.
• The foreign minister completed his four-day visit to the UN headquarters in New York on Friday and then went off-the-radar for the weekend, stirring wild speculations in the Pakistani American community.
• Pakistan`s diplomatic missions in Washington and New York offered no explanation on his weekend engagements.
• Asked if Mr Bhutto-Zardari would also meet US Secretary of State Antony Blinken during his three-day stay, the State Department said, `We do not have anything to share at this time. The foreign minister, however, did talk about his efforts to improve US-Pakistan relations in interviews to various US media outlets. In an interview to NPR`s Amna Nawaz, he explained how Islamabad was trying to maintain good relations with both Beijing and Washington

4. UN nature deal seeks $20bn yearly aid for developing nations

• A UN nature deal proposed on December 18, 2022 calls to protect at least 30 per cent of the planet by 2030 and asks rich countries to stump up $20 billion in yearly aid for developing nations to save their ecosystems.
• China, chairing the COP15 biodiversity summit in Montreal, presented a long-awaited compromise text aiming to seal a pact to save the species and ecosystems on which life depends. It called on wealthy countries to increase financial aid to the developing world to$20bn annually by 2025, rising to $30bnperyearby2030.
• The document also called on countries to `ensure and enable that by 2030 at least 30pc of terrestrial, inland water, and coastal and marine areas` are effectively conserved and managed

5. Israel expels Palestinian human rights lawyer

• French-Palestinian human rights lawyer Salah Hamouri, held without charge in Israeli prisons since March accused of security offences, arrived in Paris on December 18, 2022 following his expulsion from Israel condemned by Paris.
• Hamouri, 37, had been held in Israel under a controversial practice known as administrative detention, which allows suspects to be detained for renewable periods of up to six months.
• He arrived at Paris airport on Sunday morning, the culmination of a lengthy judicial saga after his deportation.
• `I have changed location but the fight continues,` an emotional Hamouri said at the airport, where he was welcomed by his wife Elsa, politicians, NGO representatives and supporters of the Palestinian cause. `I have an enormous responsibility to my cause and people. 6. Nine Iraqi police officers killed in suspected IS attack

• Gunmen in northern Iraq, where remnants of the militant Islamic State group are active, blew up a vehicle carrying policeman before opening fire killing nine, police sources said on December 18, 2022.
• No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, one of the deadliest in Iraq in recent months.
• The bomb blast in the Kirkuk area hit a vehicle transporting members of Iraq`s federal police.
• It was followed by `a direct attack with small arms` near the village of Shalal al-Matar, a federal police officer told AFP on condition of anonymity, attributing the assault to IS


7. North Korea fires two medium-range ballistic missiles

• North Korea fired two medium-range ballistic missiles on Sunday, Seoul`s military said, days after Pyongyang announced a successful test of a solid-fuel motor for a new weapons system.
• Military tensions on the Korean peninsula have risen sharply this year as Pyongyang has carried out an unprecedented blitz of weapons tests, including the launch of its most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile ever last month.
• South Korea`s Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected two medium range ballistic missiles that had been fired from the Tongchangri area in North Pyongan province.
• The missiles were fired from 11:13am to 12:05 pm into the East Sea, it said, referring to the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan


8. Russia shells centre of Kherson

• Ukraine said Russian shelling on December 18, 2022 targeted the southern city of Kherson, which has been faced repeated attacks since Kyiv`s forces recaptured it last month.
• `Another blow was delivered to the city centre.
• Three people were injured.
• They received shrapnel wounds, one wounded is in a serious condition,` deputy head of the president`s office Kyrylo Tymoshenko said on social media


9. UN report warns against `dehumanising` migrants

• No one should have to surrender their human right to migrate in order to find a living wage, the UN human rights office, OHCHR, said in a report highlighting the importance of temporary migratory labour programmes.
• The report, `We wanted workers, but human beings came,` coincided with International Migrants Day on Sunday, zeroes-in on schemes in operation across the Asia-Pacific region the largest single migrant-producing region in the world.
• `Migrant workers are often dehumanized,` said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk reminding `they are human beings entitled to human rights and full protection of their human dignity`
