1. Ghastly murder of Lankan man in Sialkot shames nation

• Furious workers of a garment factory in Sialkot on Friday tortured their Sri Lankan general manager to death over allegations of blasphemy and set the body on fire.
• The brutal killing drew widespread condemnation from government officials and human rights bodies.
• The employees of Rajco Industries, located on Wazirabad Road, staged a protest on the premises alleging that Priyantha Kumara, had committed blasphemy. On receiving information about the protest, three personnel of the Uggoki police reached the spot, but the mob clearly outnumbered them, making them silent spectators.
• According to a local journalist, the district police chief was contacted several times on his mobile phone, but he did not answer
• The protesters suspended traffic on Wazirabad Road and were joined by all the factory workers and a large number of locals. On seeing the mob gradually swell from a few dozen to hundreds, Mr Kumara dashed to the roof. Shouting slogans, the charged protesters chased him, dragged him out on the road and tortured him with kicks, stones and iron rods, killing him on the spot. The mob then set the body on fire.

2. Jan Jamali takes oath as Balochistan Assembly speaker

• Mir Jan Mohammad Khan Jamali, who was elected speaker of the Balochistan Assembly unopposed, took the oath of his office during a session of the legislature on December 3, 2021.
• Mir Jamali could not take oath after being elected last month due to his illness and was admitted to a hospital in Karachi.
• Deputy Speaker Sardar Babar Khan Musakhail, who presided over the session, administered the oath to Mr Jamali as speaker.
• Mir Jan Jamali has previously served as the chief minister, Balochistan Assembly speaker and the deputy chairman of the Senate twice.

3. NAB arrests Sindh PA speaker on Supreme Court`s premises

• The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on December 3, 2021 arrested Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani from the premises of the Supreme Court, which had told the PPP leader that his appeal would be heard only if he surrendered to the bureau to answer allegations of corruption.
• Consequently, Mr Durrani, who is accused of accumulating assets beyond his known sources of income, waited for almost four hours outside the Courtroom No.
• 2, where his appeal was heard by a Supreme Court bench, to receive the one-page order of the court.
• His appeal was taken up by a three-judge bench comprising Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Sajjad Ali Shah and Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah. Mr Durrani was represented by his counsel Amir Raza Naqvi

4. Parliament House, NA official website made accessible to special persons

• The National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser on December 3, 2021 made the Parliament House building and the National Assembly`s official website accessible to persons with disabilities besides unveiling the full version of the Braille constitution of Pakistan.
• Speaking at a ceremony of International Day of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) at the Parliament House, Asad Qaiser said collaborative efforts required to ensure inclusive, accessible, and sustainable future of persons with disabilities. The theme for the day is: `Leadership and Participation of Persons with Disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-Covid-19 world.

5. UAE places biggest order for French warplanes

• The United Arab Emirates signed a record 14-billion-euro contract for 80 Rafale warplanes and committed billions of euros in other deals as French President Emmanuel Macron kicked off a Gulf tour on December 3, 2021.
• The biggest international order ever made for the French jets came as Macron held talks with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed at the start of a two-day trip which will also take in Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
• The resource-rich UAE, one of the French defence industry`s biggest customers, also inked an order for 12 Caracal military transport helicopters for a total bill of more than 17 billion euros.
• `French engagement in the region, active cooperation in the fight against terrorism and the clear positions we have taken have allowed us to grow closer with the United Arab Emirates,` Macron told journalists in Dubai

6. Talks on Iran N-deal pause, to resume next week

• Diplomats negotiating in Vienna to revive Iran`s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers have paused after five days of talks to consult their governments and will reconvene next week, officials said on December 3, 2021.
• The European Union official chairing the meeting said there had been some progress, but further convergence was necessary.
• `We have identified the challenges ahead. Now it is time to consult with capitals,` EU diplomat Enrique Mora told reporters. `We will be resuming here in Vienna next week.
• `We have substantial challenges ahead, time is not unlimited, there is an obvious sense of urgency,` he added.
• `But above all we need a certain convergence of policy to start negotiations

7. India to use Afghan trucks for sending aid to Afghanistan

• Pakistan on December 3, 2021 permitted use of Afghan trucks for transporting Indian humanitarian aid to Afghanistan.
• `It has been decided to allow the use of Afghan trucks for transportation from Wagah border to Torkham,` FO spokesman Asim Iftikhar said.
• The decision was conveyed to the Charge d`Affaires of India at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he said.The move came as European Union`s envoy to Afghanistan Tomas Niklasson urged both Islamabad and Delhi to resolve issues concerning the transfer of Indian humanitarian aid to Afghanistan.
• Afghanistan, the UNDP fears, could face the worst humanitarian crisis of its history with nearly 23 million people facing imminent severe hunger and millions likely to sink into poverty

8. WHO says Omicron is in 38 countries, but no death reported

• Omicron has been detected in 38 countries but there are no reported deaths so far from the new Covid-19 variant, the World Health Organisation said on December 3, 2021.
• A WHO spokesman told reporters that the UN health agency had `not seen reports of Omicron-related deaths yet`.
• Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO`s technical lead on Covid-19, said Omicron had been reported in 38 countries, with the variant now spread across all six WHO regions.
• The WHO has said it will take several weeks to determine how infectious Omicron is, and to assess how vaccines, tests and treatments hold up against it.

9. PSL 7 set for Jan 27 start, player draft on Dec 12

• The seventh edition of the HBL Pakistan Super League will start from Jan 27 with the month long tournament beginning in Karachi and ending in Lahore, the Pakistan Cricket Board announced on December 3, 2021.
• Karachi will host the first 15 matches with the last 19 matches being held in Lahore starting Feb 10, including its Feb 27 showpiece final which will return to the Gaddafi Stadium for the first time since 2017.
• The opening match will see holders Multan Sultans take on 2020 champions Karachi Kings at the National Stadium while 2019 champions Quetta Gladiators and 2017 winners Peshawar Zalmi clashing the following day.

10. Acclaimed Shakespearean actor Antony Sher dies

• Antony Sher, one of the most acclaimed Shakespearean actors of his generation, has died aged 72, the Royal Shakespeare Company said on December 3, 2021.
• Sher had been diagnosed with terminal cancer earlier this year. His husband, Royal Shakespeare Company Artistic Director Gregory Doran, took leave from his job to care for him.
• Born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1949, Sher moved to Britain in the late 1960s to study drama. He joined the RSC in 1982 and had a breakthrough role in 1984 as the usurping king in Richard Ill, which won him a best-actor prize at British theaters Olivier Awards.
• He went on to play most of Shakespeare`s meaty male roles, including Falstaff in the Henry IV plays, Leontes in The Winter`s Tale, Shylock in The Merchant of Venice, lago in Othello and the title characters in Macbeth and King Lear
