1. IHC restrains Naeem from working as PTV chairman

• The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on January 14, 2021 restrained Naeem Bokhari from working as the chairman of Pakistan Television (PTV).
• The court noted that the appointment of Mr Bokhari and five directors of the PTV board had been made in violation of the decision of the Supreme Court.

2. Pakistan, Turkey to boost defence relations

• Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Mujahid Anwar Khan, who is on a four-day official visit to Turkey, held meetings with senior military leadership of Turkey and discussed ways to further promote Pakistan-Turkey defence ties, especially between air forces of the two countries.
• According to information received here, the air chief separately called on Minister for National Defence of Turkey Hulusi Akar and Chief of the Turkish General Staff General Yasar Guler.

3. Four soldiers martyred in two gun battles

• Four soldiers were martyred in exchanges of fire with terrorists and Indian forces in North Waziristan tribal district and along the Line of Control in Azad Jammu and Kashmir on January 14, 2021.
• According to the Inter-Services Public Relations, security forces conducted two intelligence-based operations in the tribal district during which two wanted terrorists, including an improvised explosive device expert, were killed

4. Three Pak Navy officers promoted as Rear Admiral

• Three Commodores of Pakistan Navy have been promoted as Rear Admiral with immediate effect.
• The promoted officers include Commodore Javed Iqbal, Commodore Muhammad Sohail Arshad and Commodore Salman Ilyas.
• All three newly promoted rear admirals are recipients of Sitara-e-Imtiaz (Military) and are graduate of Pakistan Navy War College, Lahore and National Defence University, Islamabad. The officers have illustrious service career with vast experience of various Command and Staff appointments.

5. Schools in Punjab to re-open with strict SOPs on 18th

• Punjab Minister for Law, Parliamentary Affairs and Cooperatives Raja Basharat has said schools and colleges are being opened for the 9th to 12th classes from January 18.
• However, the health department has expressed concern that if SOPs were not fully implemented in educational institutions, it could increase the rate of the epidemic, so a review meeting would be held on February 8 after the schools re-open, he said

6. Covid-19: China stops PIA flights for three weeks

• The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has halted flights to China in the wake of the second wave of coronavirus in China.
• The flights were cancelled after 10 Pakistani passengers tested positive for Covid-19, a PIA spokesman confirmed the suspension of the flights. According to local media sources, China has also imposed a temporary travel ban on Pakistani passengers. PIA operates two weekly flights to China.

7. UK asks India to lift restrictions in IIOJ&K

• The United Kingdom (UK) has asked India to lift all restrictions in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJ&K) and allow a team from its High Commission in Delhi to visit the occupied territory for a first-hand assessment of the situation.
• The demand has been made by the UK Secretary of State for Justice Robert Buckland while replying to a debate on the “political situation in Kashmir” in the Westminster Hall on Wednesday.
• Responding to the debate, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Minister, Nigel Adams said the situation in Kashmir remains an issue for India and Pakistan and it should be resolved according to the wishes of Kashmiri people

8. Afghanistan to get power supply from Turkmenistan

• Afghanistan and Turkmenistan inaugurated new transport, power and communications links on January 14, 2021 as President Ashraf Ghani and Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov participated via teleconference in opening ceremonies for a new branch of the railway connecting the two countries, a new power transmission line and a fibre optic line.
• A 500 kilovolt, 153-kilometre power transmission line connecting Kerki, Turkmenistan, to Sheberghan, Afghanistan, is the first leg of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (TAP)power project part-financed by the Asian Development Bank. Afghanistan`s fourth largest city, Mazar-i-Sharif, is among the cities slated to receive Turkmen electricity

9. UN asks US to reverse decision to label Houthis as `terrorists`

• The United States must cancel its decision to classify Yemen`s Houthi rebels as `terrorists` to avoid the risk of a famine not seen for decades, a United Nations official told the Security Council on January 14, 2021.
• `What is the likely humanitarian impact? The answer is a large-scale famine on a scale that we have not seen for nearly 40 years,` said Mark Lowcock, the UN undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs

10. Devine hits fastest T20 ton

• New Zealand captain Sophie Devine hit the fastest century in women`s Twenty20 history on January 14, 2021, taking just 36 balls to reach 100 in a domestic match in Dunedin.
• Devine tore apart the Otago Sparks bowling attack, hitting nine sixes and seven fours to set up a 10-wicket win for her Wellington Blaze side. She then capped her innings with two fours to finish with an unbeaten 108 off 38 balls
