1. Studying of Holy Quran with translation made compulsory in all universities
• Reading of Holy Quran with Urdu translation has been made compulsory in the public sector universities across Punjab, said a handout issued by the Governor House.
• According to the details, Punjab Governor Ch Mohammad Sarwar, who is also the Chancellor of Universities in Punjab, has announced this decision in consultation with the Vice-Chancellors of all the universities. The handout said that a formal notification to this effect has also been issued.
• It further said that universities would decide about the credit hours and other micro academic details in this regard before start of lecturers on the Holy Quran
2. Pakistan starts manufacturing COVID-19 kits
• Pakistan has developed indigenous COVID-19 diagnostic kits that have been approved by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) for commercial use and is likely to bring down the cost of coronavirus tests in the country, said Fawad Chaudhry, Federal Minister for Science and Technology.
• “We were mostly importing COVID-19 test kits from China. Now our scientists have developed our own Polymerase Chain Reaction equipment,” he said in an interview with Arab News.
• Chaudhry informed that the kit was developed by experts at the National University of Science and Technology with more than 90 percent accuracy which was about 20 percent better than the imported tests
3. Federal govt to spend Rs22,921m on Kachi Canal Project
• The federal government would be spending Rs22921 million on the remaining work of Kachhi Canal Project to overcome the shortfall of water especially during the harvesting season at district Dera Bugti. The government has earmarked a huge amount of Rs2000 million in the current Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) to initiate the expansion work of the in the first phase of the kachhi canal project.
• The project would become the main source of water in the area and would bring change in the fate of the local farmers with the provision of canal water. The federal government has announced the fifth package of the construction of 100 Dams in Balochistan with projected cost of Rs 13512.725 million to establish more dams in the province.
• The government has allocated Rs 500 million initially for the projects of the construction of dams in the PSDP of the year 2020-21 to create sources of recharging the underground water level in the province.
4. Punjab budget to be presented today
• Punjab Budget for the next fiscal year 2020-2021 will be presented on June 14, 2020 (today].
• Provincial Minister for Finance Hashim Jawan Bakhat will present the budget in the session of provincial assembly at a local hotel in Lahore at 2:00 P.M Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Finance Department in a statement has said that for the first time, the budget proposals have been prepared with the consultation of all stakeholders
5. Pakistan’s top actress Sabiha Khanum passes away
• Sabiha Khanum, a leading Pakistani film star of yesteryears, has passed away in Leesburg, in the United States, State of Virginia, leaving behind a treasure of cinematic work and a large number of grieving fans, Sabiha, 85, who ruled the silver screen in 1950s and 1960s, was suffering from renal disease, according to her family sources.
• “It is with great sadness that we share the news of the demise of our beautiful and beloved Sabiha Raza (Sabiha Khanum) who passed away earlier today, June 13th, 2020,” her granddaughter, Sarish Khan, said in a FaceBook post
6. EU agrees purchase of 300m coronavirus vaccine doses
• Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands have signed an agreement with pharmaceutical group AstraZeneca to guarantee the supply to the EU of 300 million doses of a possible coronavirus vaccine, the German government announced on June 13, 2020.
• The four countries have signed an agreement with the group, formed in 1999 from the merger of the Swedish company Astra and British company Zeneca, which provides for the supply of a vaccine to all EU member states as soon it is discovered, said the German Ministry of Health.
• AstraZeneca is partnering in the enterprise with Britain`s Oxford University, which has pioneered the inoculation.
7. Covid-19 pushing millions of South Asians into poverty
• Of the 176 million people expected to be pushed into poverty by the coronavirus crisis, two-thirds are in South Asia, warned a World Bank report released this week.
• Officially, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh had the third, seventh and tenth-most new cases in the world this week.
• But experts warned that the real situation could be worse as testing rates in the region were still extremely low.
• Reports in the US media suggested India was testing at one-twentieth the rate of the US.
8. Nepal`s lower house of parliament approves new map
• Nepal`s lower house of parliament on June 13, 2020 approved a new national emblem with a political map that includes strategic territories disputed with its giant neighbour India.
• With relations between the two strained by their frontier squabble, India quickly hit back saying the action was `not tenable`.
• The two countries have been wrangling since India last month opened a new 80-kilometre road in Uttarakhand state leading up to the disputed Lipu Lekh pass.
9. Britain supports ICC after Trump approves sanctions against it
• Britain said on June 13, 2020 the International Criminal Court (ICC) should be able to work independently, without fear of sanction, two days after US President Donald Trump approved economic and travel sanctions against some of its employees.
• `The UK strongly supports the International Criminal Court in tackling impunity for the worst international crimes,` Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said.
• `We will continue to support positive reform of the court, so that it operates as effectively as possible.
10. Two UN peacekeepers die in attack in northern Mali
• Armed men have killed two UN peacekeepers in a region of northwestern Mali wracked by jihadist violence, the United Nations said June 13, 2020.
• A logistical convoy of the UN peacekeeping mission travelling between the towns of Tessalit and Gao was attacked Saturday evening by “unidentified armed individuals” who killed two of the soldiers, the mission, known as MINUSMA, said in a statement. It did not indicate the nationalities of those killed.
• The convoy had stopped when it was attacked near the village of Tarkint, northeast of Gao, the largest town in northern Mali. The UN troops “retaliated firmly and sent the assailants fleeing”, the statement said. The head of the peacekeeping mission, Mahamat Saleh Annadif, condemned the “cowardly acts aimed at paralysing the mission’s operations on the ground.”
