1. NSAs meet in Geneva, agree to step up Pak-US cooperation

• Pakistan and the United States have set the stage for a fresh impetus of their bilateral ties with pledges of greater engagement and economic cooperation.
• The icebreaker between Islamabad and Washington took place on Sunday in Geneva where national security advisers Jake Sullivan of the US and Moeed Yusuf of Pakistan met and, according to a statement jointly issued by them, `agreed to advance practical cooperation`.
• This was the first highest-level physical contact between the two countries since the Biden administration took office


2. Sindh restricts public movement after 8pm to contain cases

• The Sindh government has decided to restrict unnecessary movement of people, on foot or in vehicles, after 8pm from May 25, 2021 (today) in the wake of an alarming spike in Covid-19 cases in the province.
• The decision to this effect was taken at an extensive sitting of the Provincial Task Force, which was chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, held at CM House on Monday.
• The meeting was told that during the past 24 hours, Sindh had detected 1,529 new cases, Punjab reported 802 more cases, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 470, Islamabad 106, Azad Jammu and Kashmir 69, Balochistan 66 and Gilgit-Baltistan 18. This showed that Sindh had the highest number of Covid-19 cases in the country, the chief minister said


3. NA extends tax amendment ordinance for another 120 days

• The National Assembly on May 24, 2021 extended the Tax Laws (Amendment) Ordinance, VI 2021, which was set to expire on June 11.
• The house adopted a resolution to extend the ordinance for a further period of 120 days under proviso to sub-paragraph (i) of paragraph (a) of clause (2) of Article 89 of the Constitution.
• The ordinance, according to its aims and objectives, seeks to augment efforts towards economic stability and ensure expeditious implementation of tax policies envisaging innovation and documentation of the economy, promotion of foreign investment in the local debt market, removal of anomalies and mitigation of the genuine hardships of taxpayers. It aims to connect non-resident Pakistanis to banking channels in Pakistan digitally and to allow them to invest in financial instruments, government`s securities, stock exchange and real estate


4. Pakistan starts working on nasal Covid-19 vaccine

• With only four million people having been fully or partially vaccinated across the country, the University of Health Sciences (UHS) has started working on protocols to start trials for nasal Covid-19 vaccine.
• It will be a single dose vaccine, which does not require a syringe. Itis hoped the clinical trial will commence in six to eight weeks after approval from three committees is obtained.
• On the other hand, the country reported 3,060 new cases and 57 deaths in a single day. Talking to Dawn, UHS Vice Chancellor Dr Javed Akram said the university had started developing protocols for the clinical trial of the nasal vaccine.


5. NA body approves MTI bill as opposition boycotts meeting

• After a boycott by members of the opposition parties, National Assembly`s Standing Committee on Health on May 24, 2021 passed the Medical Teaching Institution (MTI) Bill and referred it to the house for further discussion and voting.
• The meeting was chaired by Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) legislator Khalid Hussain Magsi and held at the Ministry of National Health Services (NHS).
• During the meeting, members of the opposition parties criticised the bill and alleged that it was an attempt to privatise Pakistan Institute of Medical Science (Pims)


6. PM inaugurates `Ehsaas Savings Wallets` initiative for poor women

• Prime Minister Imran Khan on May 24, 2021 launched the `Ehsaas Savings Wallets` pilot initiative for seven million poorest of the poor women registered with the government as Kafaalat beneficiaries under its Ehsaas programme.
• Addressing the inauguration ceremony, the prime minister said that most of the digitally and financially excluded segments in the country were destitute women. For the first time, the poorest women in Pakistan would have the option to save their stipends, he said.
• `I believe savings can help families to climb out of poverty,` he said, adding, `access to saving accounts is often the first step towards broader financial inclusion.


7. Board exams to be held after June 20, ministers decide

• Education ministers of the country on May 24, 2021 decided that exams of 10th and 12th classes will be held in the first phase after June 20 this year.
• The Inter-Provincial Education Ministers Conference (IPEMC), held an online meeting which was chaired by Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood.
• The meeting decided that exams of all boards will be held by all means and no student will be promoted without an exam


8. Covid-19 hits people with diabetes harder than non-diabetics, say experts

• People living with poor diabetes control are more prone to various types of infectious diseases, including Covid-19 as well as lethal infections like mucormycosis, or `black fungus`, as the health condition reduces a person`s ability to fight bacteria, viruses and fungus, experts associated with pandemic control measures, care and treatment in Pakistan warned on May 24, 2021.
• They said in Pakistan several million people were undiagnosed diabetics who were unaware of their health condition, and they could con-tract infectious diseases more easily than healthier persons. They advised people at risk of getting diabetes to get themselves screened for diabetes once or twice a year


9. 115,000 health workers have died from Covid, says WHO

• At least 115,000 health and care workers have died from Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, the WHO chief said on Monday, calling for a dramatic scale up of vaccination in all countries.
• At the opening of the World Health Organisation`s main annual assembly, Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus hailed the sacrifices made by health workers around the world to battle the pandemic.
• `For almost 18 months, health and care workers all over the world have stood in the breach between life and death,` he said


10. Scientists restore partial sight in blind man

• Scientists have for the first time managed to partially restore the sight of a blind patient by altering his ceHs, according to the results of a groundbreaking study published on May 24, 2021.
• The technique known as optogenetics, which has been developed in the field of neuroscience over the last 20 years, involves genetically altering cells so they produce more light-sensitive proteins.
• In some cases of blindness, known as inherited photoreceptor diseases, light-sensing cells in the retina that use proteins to deliver visual information to the brain via the optic nerve progressively degenerate
