1. Pakistan may become unbearably hot by end of the century

• Even as the government prepares to make a case for climate justice at the UN climate conference (COP27) that starts November 6, 2022, an alarming new United Nations report predicts that Pakistan`s average annual temperature will increase to 22.4 degrees Celsius within the next decade and a half, and would cross the 26°C threshold by the end of the century.
• The fresh report also warns that on average, the number of hot days in a year i.e. when the temperature remains above 35 Celsius will be 124 by the end of 2030, and this number will rise to 179 by the year 2099.
• At 35 Celsius, the human body struggles to cool down through perspiration alone henceraising the risk of death from overheating.
• The Human Climate Horizons platform, a collaboration between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Climate Impact Lab, provides insights into the direction and magnitude of changes in the climate, like the number of extremely hot days each year and the impact of those changes on human welfare.


2. PM to attend COP27

• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will be visiting Egypt to participate in the Sharm El-Sheikh COP27 Summit on Nov 7 and 8.
• The premier will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and other cabinet members and senior officials. This summit is taking place as part of the 27th UN Climate Change Conference (COP27).
• At the invitation of the Egyptian Presidency of COP27, the PM will also co-chair, along with his Norwegian counterpart, a roundtable discussion on climate change and the sustainability of vulnerable communities on Nov 8, according to Foreign Office.
• He will participate in other high level events as a speaker, including the UN Secretary General`s roundtable to launch the Early Warning Systems for Executive Action Plan, and the Middle East Green Initiative Summit on Nov 7



3. WB aims to `spur` action with Pakistan climate report

• The World Bank will release a Pakistan-centric climate report during the United Nations Climate Conference (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, to help prioritise impactful actions needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and boost adaptation.
• According to a statement by the World Bank, `Climate and Development Report` will be launched on November 10.
• Pakistan ranks among the ten countries most affected by climate change, the statement said, adding climate and development reports are diagnostic reports that integrate climate change and development considerations within the context of nations. The launch will follow a multi-stakeholder discussion on priority investments and policy changes to drive Pakistan`s development while managing climate risk


4. Govt scraps PEMRA ban on Imran`s speeches

• In a surprise move, the federal government on November 5, 2022 directed the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to withdraw a ban, announced earlier in the day, on the telecast of live or recorded speeches by PTI Chairman Imran Khan.
• Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said in a statement that directives had been issued by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to ensure the ban `should be terminated`.
• At the same time, she said, PEMRA should ensure `continued implementation of legal requirements under Article 19 of the Constitution`


5. Pakistan, UAE agree to enhance cooperation

• Pakistan and the UA E agreed to deepen mutual cooperation in all fields, including economy, trade, energy and investment.
• The agreement was reached during a meeting between Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and UAE Minister for Foreign Affairs Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan on November 5, 2022.
• During the meeting that took place in Abu Dhabi on the sidelines of the Annual Sir Bani Yas Forum, Mr Bhutto-Zardari and his UAE counterpart emphasised the importance of bilateral relations.
• The foreign minister expressed his gratitude to the UAE leadership for their generous support for the flood-affected people of Pakistan

6. India allows export of 6m tonnes of sugar

• India on November 5, 2022 approved export of 6 million tonnes of sugar in 2022-23 in line with market expectations for the year`s first tranche.
• India exported an all-time high of more than 11 million tonnes of sugar in 2021-22 and the industry was expecting New Delhi this year to allow exports of 8 to 9 million tonnes in two tranches.
• India is the world`s biggest producer of sugar and the second biggest exporter.
• New Delhi has allocated 6 million tonnes of sugar to mills based on their production in the past three years, the government said in a notification


7. North Korea launches four ballistic missiles

• North Korea fired four ballistic missiles on November 5, 2022, the South Korean military said, the latest in Pyongyang`s testing blitz this week as Washington and Seoul concluded their biggest-ever air force drills.
• The flurry of North Korean launches included an intercontinental ballistic missile and one that landed near the South`s territorial waters. South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said it was `effectively a territorial invasion`.
• The launches came as hundreds of US and South Korean warplanes including B-1B heavy bombers participated in the Vigilant Storm exercise, which Pyongyang described as `aggressive and provocative` `The South Korean military detected four short-range ballistic missiles launched by North Korea from Tongrim, North Pyongan Province, to the West Sea at around 11:32am to 11:59am today,` South Korea`s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said in a statement on Saturday, using another name for the Yellow Sea

8. Iran admits sending Russia drones before Ukraine war

• Iran admitted for the first time on November 7, 2022 that it had sent drones to Russia but insisted they were supplied to its ally before Moscow`s invasion of Ukraine.
• Kyiv and its Western allies have accused Russia of using Iranian-made drones in recent weeks to carry out attacks in Ukraine.
• Tehran has repeatedly denied the claims but on Saturday Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian was quoted as saying that drones had been sent to Russia before the invasion began. `We supplied Russia with a limited number of drones months before the war in Ukraine,` the official news agency IRNA quoted Amir-Abdollahian as saying


9. Stokes takes England into semis as Australia dumped out

• Ben Stokes hit a gutsy unbeaten 42 as England reached the Twenty20 World Cup semi-finals with a tense four-wicket win over Sri Lanka in their final Super 12 match on November 5, 2022, sending hosts and defending champions Australia out of the tournament in the process.
• England needed to win to make the last four from Group 1 alongside already qualified New Zealand and they achieved the feat in a nail-biting finish with two balls to spare at Sydney Cricket Ground.
• If they had lost, hosts Australia would have gone through.
• Sri Lanka looked on track for a big total when they reached 80-2 after 10 overs, but the aggressive Pathum Nissanka was out for 67 and the Asian champions crumbled to 141-8, with Mark Wood taking 3-26


10. LHC ex-judge Fakharun Nisa passes away

• Fakharun Nisa Khokhar, a former judge of the Lahore High Court (LHC) and the president of the bar, passed away on November 5, 2022. She was 80.
• Her funeral was offered in a mosque on Abid Majeed Road, Lahore Cantonment, after Maghrib prayers.
• Several judges and lawyers were among those who attended the funeral
