1. Climate fund breakthrough offers hope at COP27

• COP27 host Egypt scrambled to salvage the UN climate talks on November 19, 2022 with the European Union and Pakistan signalling a breakthrough over the contentious issue of `loss and damage` funding for climate vulnerable nations.
• Talks stalled over the terms under which wealthy polluters provide `loss and damage` funding for countries wracked by climate disasters, as well as over ratcheting up ambition in tackling global warming.
• After the EU roundly rejected a document shown by Egypt overnight because of concerns it was weak on curbing emissions, a source from the bloc said at least the loss and damage issue was `agreed` as far as it was concerned. The agreement was still subject to confirmation at a closing meeting


2. GB cabinet allows HEC to conduct tests for govt jobs

• Gilgit-Baltistan cabinet on November 19, 2022 decided to conduct tests for recruitments on all gazetted posts in the region and approved an education package for Diamer district.
• The meeting, headed by Chief Minister Khalid Khurshid Khan, decided to conduct tests through Education Testing Council (ETC) of the HEC to ensure transparency in the appointment process.
• Chief Secretary Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani said the cabinet has given the nod to conduct tests with the help of ETC to ensure meritocracy. He said ETC will be responsible to conduct tests for the recruitment of revenue staff, police, education officers and personnel for other departments


3. Pakistan seeks world help for revival of Afghan economy

• Pakistan has urged the international community to help revive the Afghan economy and immediately provide $4.2 billion to the war-torn country for meeting its humanitarian needs.
• `We need to revive the Afghan economy its banking system and for that purpose the Afghan assets which are held abroad need to be injected back into the Afghan financial system,` Ambassador Munir Akram said on Friday.
• He urged the international community also to fulfil the UN secretary-general`s appeal for $4.2bn in humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan

4. Afghan border remains shut; no headway in official talks

• The Pakistan Afghan border at Chaman, Balochistan, remained closed for another day after a flag meeting at Friendship Gate between officials from both sides failed to evolve a consensus over the reopening of the crossing.
• On Sunday, the border at Chaman had been closed for an indefinite period after an armed suspect from the Afghan side opened fire on Pakistani security personnel at Friendship Gate, resulting in the martyrdom of one soldier and injuries to two.
• During the flag meeting, the Pakistani officials, including Chaman DC Abdul Hameed Zehri, discussed with Afghan government officials the need for a `joint mechanism` to put an end to incidents of violence at the border. Pakistan also suggested joint interrogations by both sides to nab the accused involved in Sunday`s shooting

5. UK will support Kyiv `until Ukraine has won`: Sunak

• British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on November 19, 2022 used his first visit to Kyiv to pledge support to Ukraine, offering a major new air defence package as the country celebrated retaking the southern city of Kherson. `I am here today to say that the UK will continue to stand with you until Ukraine has won the peace and security it needs and deserves,` Sunak said in a press conference with President Volodymyr Zelensky.
• The British leader announced a new air defence package worth 50 million ($60 million).
• This comprises `125 anti aircraft guns and technology to counter deadly Iranian supplied drones, including dozens of radars and anti drone electronic warfare capability,` according to a Downing Street statement

6. Malaysia votes in tight race with no clear winner

• The coalition of Malaysia`s opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was running neck and neck with a rival bloc led by a former prime minister in a tight election race, vote counts showed early on Sunday.
• Analysts have warned that the multi-racial country could face further political instability if no group emerges with a clear majority after Saturday`s polls and frenzied horse trading talks ensue.
• One of the biggest casualties so far is former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad, 97, who was roundly defeated in his constituency

7. Indian police raid journalists` houses in held Kashmir

• Indian police detained a journalist, seized his laptop, camera and mobile phone during raids at the houses of half a dozen media persons in occupied Kashmir in what the police claimed an investigation into `anonymous online threats` to several journalists.
• An official said on condition of anonymity that Sajad Ahmad Kralyari was detained for questioning, and his camera was seized.
• Writer and author Gouhar Geelani was among those whose house was raided on Saturday, the official said.
• These journalists could not be reached for comment as their phones were switched off


8. Four Syrian soldiers killed in Israeli air aggression

• Four Syrian soldiers were killed and one wounded in Israeli `air aggression` on some military posts in the coastal and central region of Syria on November 19, 2022 morning, Syrian state news agency SANA reported.
• Syrian air defences countered the attack, which came from the Mediterranean Sea side and also caused material damage, the agency said. `At approximately 6:30 this morning, the Israeli enemy carried out an air aggression over the Mediterranean Sea, from the direction of Banias, targeting some posts in the central and coastal region,` the agency quoted a military source as saying. The Israeli military declined to comment

9. Comedian Tariq Teddy passes away

• Popular comedian and theatre artiste Tariq Teddy passed away on November 19, 2022. He was 46. Teddy had been fighting liver disease and breathing issues for quite some time but his condition worsened a couple of weeks back when he was admitted to a private hospital. He was later shifted to the Punjab Kidney and Liver Institute (PKLI).
• His son, Junaid, told that his father`s condition got stable four days ago; however, it deteriorated later. Since then he was on a ventilator in the intensive care unit.
• Teddy`s brother, Shehbaz, told the artiste had been suffering from liver issues for the last one year or so.


10. Veteran Indian actress Tabassum dies at 78

• Veteran movie actor Tabassum, known for her work as a child artiste in several Hindi classics and also as host of popular TV talk show Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan, has died after suffering a cardiac arrest, her son Hoshang Govil said on November 19, 2022. She was 78.
• Mr Govil said his mother had been admitted to a hospital here for the past few days.
• On Friday, she suffered two cardiac attacks and passed away the night.
• Few days ago, she was admitted to a hospital. She had gastro problem and we went there for check-up
